This port is kinda like the Burnout Paradise port for current gen consoles in that the only improvements are framerate (though not that improved) and resolution.
Take this back in time to 360 release version and I would have bought the game a second time just for these improvements.

I get it's not perfect but downplaying the performance improvement is just willful ignorance.

It's better than the original PS3/360 versions for sure, but that's a comically low bar to overcome for Switch; even in handheld mode.

A Switch port from PS360 shouldn't have any compromises to speak of at all. The fact that this port does have some is embarrassing.

Especially after the 5 month delay. Hell, they couldn't even be bothered to fix the reversed A/B buttons, not even something as basic as that!

Namco didn't give a solitary shit about this port, which is why they tried to bury it with the delay and the release of Dark Souls Trilogy on every other console at the same time.

I think it is a good port except for the bad sound. Performance and resolution is better than I expected when announced. Very happy with it (I already played on PS3, not yet on PS4).

:) When someone pulls this kind of comment how can you argue in good faith, right? ;)
I think I was pretty open about the fact that this was a tongue and cheek comment. I even bolded my use of word "much". I just see a lot of hyperbole on both sides in this thread. Which is crazy because this port isn't even competing with anything else. It's portable version on much weaker platform.

In what world 1024x720 going to 1080p and 20fps average going to 30 fps average isn't a big improvement?

In what world 720p native at mostly 30fps and portable isn't great?

Now if want to complain (and we should and I did) about the crappy sound compression and some alpha effects downgrade that's fair enough tho I doubt Bamco gives a shit, especially after 95% of the reviews failed us and don't mention even the sound problem.

The port was half-assed and could've been better, yes.

From there to saying it's on par or even worse than on PS360 or that it's a bad port is fucking laughable. The game gives a MUCH (yes much) better gameplay experience on Switch than on PS360 and that's no small feat. And it's portable.

I'm not downplaying anything, the framerate improvements are minimal, albeit welcome.

I'm a bit sad about reduced flame effects and the lack of the new bonfire.
I'm considering not opening my package until the A+B cancel/confirm inconsistency is patched. I absolutely can't stand that. It's by far my biggest disappointment, probably because I really suck at identifying audio differences (though I did notice something changed when put side by side).

You have to consider that Dark Soul's game engine has been a bit wonky (the originals had drops into the single digits), and the game effectively flopped on the other consoles already. I'm curious if some of these bizarre issues will be dealt with if the game pulls in sales.

Funny how a 360 game has some higher quality effects lol
Hey mods, where is this heavy handed approach to moderation in non-Switch threads? Valve/Steam threads for instance get much worse than this and it goes untouched.

The dude is clearly even a Nintendo fan. And this is a Digital Foundry thread, where comparisons are meant to be made.

Looks like a great port, but those fire effects are some straight up PS2 level stuff right there.

You're wasting your time. I reported a long time ago someone posting in a 'Dreams' related thread somethink like this:

Even ADM ZhugeEX pm me asking about this, but ignored too.
I don't know what the criteria for warn some and ignore some, but this keeping happens.
I even reported two people posting the same post like this:

I have come to expect dodgy ports on Switch, especially undocked.

I mean, Mark of the Ninja is 30fps undocked. Come on. Valkyria Chronicles 1 runs at a lower resolution with no AA than VC4, which does have AA.

At the end of the day, if I buy a game on Switch over PS4 it's for the handheld mode so at this point I've become numb to disappointment and just accept it.

I guess the biggest WTF with this DS port is that this is as good as they got it after a 4 month delay.

Nintendo life gave it a good review. I'm good with that. They haven't steered me wrong yet.
Well it's a great game even with a shoddy port. I played it initially on PS3 which seems to be about as bad or worse than this and its my favorite game since Mario 64.

That said... this doesn't seem like a great effort. I own every other version but I don't really see any point in buying this.

I don't understand how you mess up the sound if they didn't even compress it compared to the 360 original.

Otherwise the port seems fine. Looks and runs better than the 360 version and has the original aesthetic.

But...it doesn't seem like they did much of anything in 6 months? It was running well in blight town back in February/May when it was demoed.
A 6 month delay with those issues seems bad.
Weird that virtuos keeps messing last gen ports but games like starlink hold up pretty well

Watching the video on my TV the audio comparisons sounded better on the switch side to me. With my home theatre set up Switch seemed to have some kind of surround sound vs the 360 one which was completely flat.

This is just untrue. I'm playing it now and the framerate and IQ are better than the PS3 version. The audio compression does suck as so some missing effects, but this thread is filled with some rather hyperbolic reactions.

Looks pretty awful on my TV, maybe PS3 games just look awfuller.

Combined with framepacing and audio issues? Yea man, what a solid effort.

I own the PS4 version of the remaster. I got this to play on the go and it's amazing on handheld. But yes, the audio issues are bad. But it can be patched.

It looks and runs better then the 360 version.. Higher res and better framerate in portable mode and 1080-900p dynamic in docked mode

Seems perfectly in line with what I would expect from the hardware minus the sound issues which just seems weird.

The audio problem is glaring, but probably something that'll get patched up. I've bought DS twice on PC, so my expectations on the visual end were pretty low going in, but having a game like this on a handheld is something I'll never be able to resist. I figure it'll be my travel companion for Blizzcon.

I noticed the Hellkite's fire breath effect at one point had zero alpha transparency, it was literally just a black cone with a fire texture applied to it.

I'm guessing these types of issues are related to RAM bandwidth.

Seems more like an issue from an inexperienced developer. DS should be a non brainer in Full-HD on the Switch. But the developer seems to rush ports, sadly they are no Panic Button.

In fairness, I think a lot of people are pretending Blightown-level performance was the standard for PS3/360 - the game ran a fairly reasonable (though far from locked) 30 FPS.

Blightown improvements across all versions are likely a result of recoding rather than brute-force hardware grunt as all versions still exhibit drops in other high-stress areas.

Remove Blightown and the upgrade is not quite as transformative.

Yeah you can't have it both ways. Calling the improvement minimal is downplaying it because Blighttown alone is a significant improvement.
Blighttown is just one area, though. I mean, the previous versions outside that area performed very similarly to the Switch version, so one area being improved seems like a minimal enhancement. A significant improvement would be a steady 30FPS with no drops and a massive improvement would be 60FPS, but that's just how I see it.

Everyone talks of blight town but..

Does it hold 30fps in Painted World also? That middle area with lots of enemies just killed the fps on ps360 (sub 10 fps).

Is the audio compression could get a fix via update or its a lost cause?

If you go to 6:34 in the video (where he mentions the missing lens flare) you can also see clearly that the 360 version has an object motion blur effect that is completely missing on Switch.

It's not as bad as I thought but I won't be getting it just yet with RDR2 around the corner and then D3 for Switch. Once it's $20 ill be all over it.

Zero chance I'm buying this with frame pacing and horrible audio. Other than that it looks decent.

Already have, but ignored. Two conversation with different ADMs with no results. Because that I stop using the report button a month ago. No problem for me. I can live with that.

I imagine most of the downgrades with the effects like fire and whatnot are to maintain a steady framerate. The fire was something that caused framerate drops in the older versions, even the original PC version would cause beefy PCs to crumble during heavy particle effects.

Also why I guess they completely changed or removed those same effects from the PC/PS4/Xbone remasters, because they just weren't very efficient or not programmed well. The Qualaag fight with all the lava pools looks worse in the PC/PS4/Xbone versions because they completely lack the visual heat distortion effects.

Hmmm... I was actually banned for 2 days last week with the only explanation being a "system wars driveby" message... but there was no red banner on any of my posts that I could find and the only gaming related post I made that day was an offhand comment about finding the Switch uncomfortable to hold. I've been too afraid to pm a mod to ask about it in case I get banned again.

I'm thinking I might just be safer not posting anything Switch related in future and hoping for the best.
