Does anyone have XPS 15 2018 (1050 Ti)? What are your experiences with the device?

Have an actual gaming PC at home but the tower is too big to take to university with me. Have a MacBook Pro 2017 for work (web dev, programming stuff) and only really play low intensity games like Pillars of Eternity 2 on it (CRPGs are VERY playable on it). Problem is it sounds like an aircraft taking off whenever I use it to play those games on it. Which cooling pad would you recommend for it and would one mitigate the problem enough? Don't want to brick this computer, I'm not buying another MacBook Pro. Getting one stolen from me few years ago was bad enough for my finances.
The MBPs doesn't even have vents on the bottom, right? A cooling pad would probably be useless.

Does anyone have XPS 15 2018 (1050 Ti)? What are your experiences with the device?
It's the same laptop they've released for the last 3 generations, with a better Thunderbolt port.

Same thermal issues too.

I am kind of eyeing the new Alienware 15 coming out or perhaps MSI Stealth 15. However the fact that new cards are about to release is making me take a step back to see what happens.

I suspect we will see some significant discounts on BF/Christmas period. 1070 would be fine for me considering I have a full gaming desktop and would use this one on trips (work/personal).

I accidentally hit my laptop inside of its very badly protected bag against the inside of a car door.

Now I'm super worried.

Unless you need it now, waiting about a month for Black Friday is a major no brainer. The 10 series laptops are going to the cheaper than they've ever been, with the mobile 20 series just 2 months from launch in January.

What could you have damaged, realistically? If you didn't crack the case, there's no way anything was affected internally.

Made of fiberglass or other fragile materials, they are not.

Two questions:

1. Anyone have a Razer laptop capable of gaming? Thoughts on performance?

2. Anyone gaming off external SSDs and doing okay?

Just recently got the Blade 15 2018 version with 1070 max q. So far it's been fantastic. I did quite a bit of research however and here are things to know:

  • Razer QA is hit or miss with these it seems. Recommend you buy from a third party like Microsoft store to get a long warranty and not have to deal with Razer in case you need to swap your laptop. I personally went thru Hidevolution(I think they are called) and they do stress testing on the unit, I also had them repaste for thermal

  • These are super thin laptops which is why I went for them. As such they can overheat easily. I have mine undervolted per the suggestion of others on the razer subreddit. Using throttlestop. I also limit my gaming sessions with demanding games to about 2 hours or so.

  • The fans can be loud with demanding games and sometimes without. I had to tweak mine and use throttle stop to keep the fans from being loud with smaller tasks. Seems to vary per device.

  • I dislike razer branding so grabbed a Dbrand skin and it's been great. You can disable the logo lighting up and cover with a skin.

For your other question coincidentally I just grabbed an external Samsung SSD as I was curious. It's been fantastic and definitely improves load time compared to an HDD. I can't wait for these to get cheaper.

Do note there is a lot of negativity on the razer subreddit but also quite a few helpful people with checklists in how to get the most out of the blade. Razer support is active there as well.

The laptop is expensive but the only thing I found to be VR ready and not look overly "gamer" with a decent screen (4K and 1080p 144hz options), at a decent size. It's too bad they lack in QA and customer support something Apple excels in which let's them get away with selling at such high prices for so little. Peace of mind is a valuable thing to consumers.

Thanks for the impressions. They sounds about right. There is just no perfect slimline gaming laptop, which is why I will stick with my thicker, cooler, and quieter behemoths for now. Saving a couple of pounds on my back isn't worth the overheating. I'm 6'5", 260lbs though heh

The QA issue with Razer really is a shame. They want charge "the Apple of gaming laptops" prices, but fall flat with manufacturing consistency and ease of customer service.

BUT, even after all of that negativity, I completely understand why they have such a market. They aren't for hardcore 24 hour gamers, instead being for professionals who 8do a spot of gaming here and there. The laptops are seriously sleek, and lack the gaudy "GAMERZ" look at first glance.

I've always believed that Razer could corner more of the market, if the 17.3" Razer Blade Pro model came with a traditionally centered touchpad, instead of the gimmick, and if they would drop the weird green logo and just put the RAZER name on the lid.

I've had really bad luck in the past haha!

I totally understand. Trust me, my laptop has taken some tremendous falls, so I know what it takes to do damage.
Funnily enough I was browsing YT before coming here and it recommended this video by Dave2Lee

I just checked out that review recently.

I seriously can't understand why these manufacturers (Dell, Apple mostly), are smashing the i9-8950HK into these super slim laptops, where it has no hope of ever running at even 80% of its potential. Even in huge monsters like the GT75VR, Alienwares, and ASUS machines, you have to do tweaking to actually get it to run at full bore under load.

I mean, I know it's so they can charge +$355.00 in the configurator, but doing so knowing that it's a complete waste of money is just greedy scumbag shit.

The point of paying the HK CPU premium is the manual overclocking, and the ability to sustain that overclock during heavy loads. These super slim laptops can't even handle its basic Turbo Boost clocks.

I was looking possibly at buying Razer but the more I read about the QA issues and Razer's warranty treatment (or the lack thereof) the less inclined I am to purchase their product.

New Alienware 15 looks pretty good though. There is also a fairly thin Dell Precision 15 available and usually you can grab one from Dell Outlet with full 3 year warranty especially if you get a good coupon.

I'm trying to figure out what specs I need. I would love to avoid breaking the bank if I can but also don't want to skimp.

I own an X1X and a Switch so this would not be my main gaming platform. It would mostly be for games I can't play on those platforms - strategy games, card games, indies, CRPGs, etc. I don't need to play new AAA games since I have the X1X. The laptop would be mostly for programming and light gaming. Is a UHD 620 good enough? Or maybe I should go for a MX 150? I'd love to spend like $700 or less if I can get away with it.

You probably still want at least a GeForce 1050 (or maybe ti) or AMD equivalent. Intel graphics or MX150 is enough for much older games and some retro emulation. Maybe some of the less demanding indies.

You didn't mention anything else though. Like screen size, battery life, weight, and so on. $700 may be possible in US before tax if you look at a bit older models (like looking at i7 7th gen vs 8th gen) or from Dell Outlet (full warranty) with coupons.

Can you wait till BF sales or CyberMonday? That will be the best bet.

The M15 does look interesting. It will be popular if Alienware designs the cooling solution correctly.

I would absolutely not take less than a GTX 1050 Ti. You can get this Acer Nitro right now for $699.

As was said above, if you aren't looking to buy immediately, you can try waiting for Black Friday/Cyber Monday. With the RTX launch looming, I will not be shocked if there are deals to clear out some of the older GTX 1060 equipped machines, though they'll probably be in the ~$800 range.

Suddenly I'm now having frame problems where like the upper part of the screen would not match the lower part of the screen during a game. Don't know what that's called. The occasional second freezes while watching YouTube, weird pixelization when walking close to objects in games like Overwatch. And then had the weirdest tears during another game. Like an actual black tear with a green outline in the game.

It's a newer laptop. 1070 GTX Predator i7. I don't know what I did to mess it up at all.

G-Sync is on and everything.

Man that Acer Helios 300 dropped in price today to 1100. Such good specs...I'm going to pull the trigger at 1000 though.

That is strange. I'd try a clean install of the graphics driver.

I'm looking at picking up a laptop with a 2070 next year. Around what time can I expect them to be available? Especially at a reasonable price. (Not that prices ever are reasonable here in Seeden). I'd prefer to spend $1500-$2000

The announcement is supposed to be in January, but I'd expect the hard launch to be looking like February/March.

Judging by the past 5 generations of Nvidia releases, launch day RTX 2070 laptops are going to start around $1750 USD.

That's in US, got to be more in Sweden. I think above €2K is likely. Not going to see much discount on them till probably summer or even back to school either.

Razer was put on my radar because of a stint I did at Oculus. Facebook (who owns them) started giving everyone an option of the razer laptop. It's really the only laptop that can run VR and isn't terrible to travel with.

I knew Razer had been making laptops for awhile but I was overall impressed with how far they had come at a glance.

I also looked at the Dell XPS and it will throttle similar to the MacBook Pros. I also found a fantastic video comparing both the razer and the xps and the performance gap for gaming was just too much given I wanted a laptop for gaming primarily and realize I will most likely upgrade my MacBook Pro for personal work stuff next year.

Comparison Video for those interested:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=D6gAvrAuzFk

Also agree manufacturers are just putting in components to have a higher number in specs but what you actually get out of it is questionable. I feel much better with mine underclocked because of this behavior.

Yeah which is why most people don't buy thru Razer which allows you a longer warranty and no requirement to deal with them directly.

I had not bought a laptop in YEARS but I will say none of the brands seem to built to last the way laptops were built in the past. Reminds me of how fragile phones have gotten, like they expect people to upgrade every 2 years or so.

I have a buddy who got an XPS not even for gaming and his was sent back for repair in the first month.

Another learning I had is

wait out first batches. The first batch of the Razer Blade 15 had lots of issues that subsequent batches did not have. It seemed to be a reoccurring theme across many top brands.

The issue is that even if I get it from say BestBuy or Microsoft or Amazon, after first 30 days and for the first year, Razor's warranty applies. So you are still dealing with them. I am just wary of such things for a $2K item.

With Dell I am fairly sure that they will resolve the issue especially if you get a higher end warranty or buy it from their business site.

Yeah launch prices don't go down for quite some time.

Going from what I've learned, the RTX 2070 laptops will come in around €2300.

I have a budget of 600-800 dollars right now and need a new laptop.

Any recommendation fro that price range

If you xan do less than $900, I highly recommend one of these Dell Inspiron 15 SKUs: #1 with 256GB SDD or #2 with 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD

Upping the budget slightly, to go from a GTX 1050 Ti to a GTX 1060, will extend the longevity and quality of your gaming experience by nearly double.

I should say that if you aren't in a major rush, there are likely to be some pretty great deals around Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The cutting edge is caked with the blood of early adopters.

Proves to be true will nearly every tech launch.

I feel like I have contributed to framing the Razer Blades as ticking time bombs, which would be an exaggeration.

I honestly feel you shouldn't be that afraid of buying one.

I think if you buy from the MS store for instance they had up to a 4 year warranty you could get. They will just replace it out right. The only potential concern is if they have it in stock.

Where I purchased had up to a 2 year warranty and any issues I have I can mail the laptop to them.

These store warranties are in addition to your laptop manufacturing warranty, the store just provides a nice stop gap and let them deal with the manufacturer instead of you.

Amazon also has an extended warranty you can purchase and they too will replace it.

I had no idea about this stuff until I went into full on research mode. I saw many people who were exchanging laptops (not just razer) multiple times to get what they deemed a "good" one.

I went with Hidevolution because of their great customer service and they actually stress test the machines with games , check monitors, apply thermal paste (this was a big cause of laptop issues across brands, paste job was poor) ,etc. I never once dealt with razer and have not so far.

That's another big change I noted it used to be going thru the manufacturer was a safe bet but now people are having issues even with brands like Dell, and depending on your living situation having to mail it vs return/swap at a store near you makes a big difference. Dell is definitely not without problems these days either. More reliable than razer sure but that won't matter if you're one of the people with the issue with them.

Dell is certainly not perfect but dealing with their business division over the years I have been pretty happy.

I am wary of Razor because there are a lot of reports around their shitty service and buying from MS Store or the other company quoted is more expensive. I will wait for Alienware instead and see how that works out. Dell usually has good deals between BF and Christmas as well.

Ryzen 5 / Vega 8 / 8GB ram
Intel i5 / Geforce 1050 / 8GB ram

For the most its 150-200 dollars between those systems depending on chassi and form factor

Wich one should i choose?

Give us some examples. Generally Intel/Nvidia will have better battery life/thermals all other things equal but you never know.

You take the GTX 1050 and forget about it. It's that simple. Even for a non-hardcore gamer, the Vega 8 is not a good experience, as it's just a step above Intel's integrated graphics.

What's your actual budget though?

I just thought asking about the stockmodel of G3 if thats a better choice then the HP version? Its costs a bit less and are about the same
Go for 1050Ti at least if you can. IMO, then it would definitely be better then HP.

https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/del...gaming/spd/g-series-15-3579-laptop/dncwgf423s

Basically this one is pretty good (but you could get it cheaper on sale) and you could also then add 8GB DDR4 to it (same speed) when you can for 16gb.

Alternatively, watch for this model to go on sale:

https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-laptops/dell-g5-15-gaming/spd/g-series-15-5587-laptop

This is quite a bit better with 8 more GB of RAM and 1060.

Sorry guys my head is hurt from looking and I'm really getting desperate, I'm looking for a gaming laptop with a price range of 1000$ to 1300$, all I need is 1080p 60fps gaming on it, I don't really care about 4K or 144hz. Also I need it to be suitable for streaming and video editing as well. i7 with 16gig ram well be good.

Sorry for asking I'm really nooby when it comes to PC hardwere

If you want a 1080p/60 gaming laptop in that price range with a powerful CPU, this Asus is my pick. The Ryzen is more powerful than an i7.

Will do a +1 for this. Have a Dell Inspiron 7577 with a 6GB 1060. It has been incredible. Pretty much every game runs at 1080p/60 at high/ultra. Just played RE7 earlier today at 1440p/60 with a little settings tweaking. Pre ordered RE2 on PC (for a great deal) based on that testing as they both share the exact same system requirements as per the Steam page.

I got mine last year at black friday for just $699. If you can wait till BF, you'll likely find the same or even better models for similar prices.

Let's try something, for science. Go to this page. Search drivers for the GTX 1070. Download 399.24 WHQL.

Run the exe, then when you get to Installation options, select 'Custom'. On the next screen, select what you want to install, and be sure to check 'Perform a clean install' before continuing.

The current driver will be removed, the laptop will be prompted to reboot, then the program will install the new driver upon Windows relaunching. Afterward, let's see if you still have the issue.

$699? Damn that was a steal. I'd have bought that myself as a back up machine if I'd have seen it.

I'm waiting for the Lenovo Legion Y730 personally. Very Razer like, only with 1050Ti instead of 1060.
And with dedicated touchpad buttons! I like that a lot.

I ended up getting the new Razer Blade 15 (2018) cuz of the Mercury White edition that just released. I got these specs:
  • Intel Core i7-8750H CPU @ 2.20GHz
  • 16GB RAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q (8GB VRAM)
  • Samsung 512GB SSD
Using it as a replacement for my Alienware 13 (2016) mainly for work/travel.

So far! I love the form factor and weight on this thing. The Alienware 13 had a great size but it was super heavy. My only gripe is the lack of an ethernet/RJ45 port -- but I've easily remedied that with a USB-C/Thunderbolt add on option. I don't game too much on it so the unit doesn't get too hot nor does the battery drain fast. When I do play games, I'll be plugged in anyways (I only play games like TEKKEN 7, SOULCALIBUR VI and some retro games).

I'll be doing more graphic work and video processing in the coming weeks. So I'll report back about that. However, first impressions are good. Can't wait to travel with it more (and I travel more than anyone I know).

The M15 does look interesting. It will be popular if Alienware designs the cooling solution correctly.
I read somewhere (maybe NBR forums) that the new m15 is using the tripod heatsink like the other AW models have been using for a while, which means you if you are an unlucky person you might one with improper seating (which will lead to uneven cooling and other issues).
Having said that Dave2D did a video on it, and was properly impressed on how cool it was.

How did you get Mercury White with the 1070? I swear on everything the website only lets me select that color with the 144Hz/GTX 1060 SKU.

Was Dave paying attention though? At 4:49 of his review I paused on the Time Spy Stress Test, and the temps are clearly peaking at the 100C line.

Glad to have found this thread. I'm on the market for a gaming laptop and finally narrowed my search to MSI titan's 8RG GT63 and 75, there's a 400€ difference between the two but they have the same specs (i7-87 hexa-core, gtx 1080, 16gb ram, 120hz screen).

Weight isn't a factor at all, since i'll be using it as a desktop replacement (still can't consider investing in a desktop). Is the extra cooling of the 75 (and mechanical keyboard) worth that difference in price?

You have to select the max (512) storage option for the 1070 model to select Mercury.

I didn't think HIDEvolution would carry the Mercury White model, but it seems they do at a $200 premium. Hmm. I really hate that it's exclusive to Razer - I'd much rather buy from the MSFT Store for warranty purposes.

At this point, I'm crossing my fingers we see 2070 GPUs in the 15" Blade by February. I think I might jump in then, and completely replace my desktop (currently an i7 3820 + 1080). I think with a 2070 and a more modern CPU, the Blade will officially outclass my desktop by then.
