'Halloween' Scares Up Second-Best October Opening With $77M+; Best Debut For Blumhouse & Carpenter Canon; Great Launch For Miramax

Universal is calling Miramax/Blumhouse's Halloween at $77.5M after a $27.2M Saturday, making it the second-best opening ever of October behind Sony's Venom ($80.2M). As we've known since Thursday night, Halloween is the best domestic opening ever in the John Carpenter 40-year old franchise, Halloween producer and co-financier Blumhouse beating their 2011 $52.5M start to Paranormal Activity 3, and it's wonderful reboot for Miramax under CEO Bill Block and Chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who also co-funded and produced the 11th sequel on screen; their recent highlight being Oscar winner I, Tonya.

We hear that Halloween played best in the East and the South, but overall excellent across the board with six out of the top 10 runs coming from the West Coast. A $200M final killing for the movie stateside is definitely within grasp. Updated demos are 53%-47% male-to-female with 72% under 35 years old with the single largest quad being 25-34 at 32%. Overall under 25 turned up at 41% (who says young people don't go to the movies?). Diversity make-up was 47% Caucasian, 23% Hispanic, 17% African American and 13% Asian.

In a statement, producer Jason Blum, who is seeing the best opening ever in U.S./Canada for his Blumhouse label, said, "The reception of fans and critics alike is a huge endorsement of the Blumhouse model. Combining legendary source material, the participation of original creators and a fresh take from talented directors and writers who don't normally do horror films, Halloween brings the franchise back to life in a fresh, relevant and fun way."

Daddy Larry about to yank this studio from his daughter.

The Sisters Brothers had a $38M budget too. Annapurna has really come off as incompetent since starting their own distribution. They get the quality and talent on most of these films (usually by overspending), but can't sell them.

One does not simply break the October opening weekend record of Venom in just two weeks!!!!!

How is venom 2nd weekend drop compared to other comic book movies.

Enjoyed Halloween, glad it slayed. Especially impressive considering it had no 3d or imax plus r rated. A Star is Born showing major leg, award season should extend the life, add in soundtrack/blu ray this movies a cash cow.

Venom's new worldwide gross is $462M. That gives it a pretty good shot at hitting $500M next weekend. China opens on Nov 9th. Japan opens on Nov 2nd, but Japan is going to be around $10M. They still don't like American superheroes.

Goddamn venom is almost guaranteed to break 600m and maybe even reach 650m

600M is locked. We are pretty close to a lock for Venom topping Ant-Man and the Wasp worldwide as well. The only thing that would prevent that is China coming in much softer than expected. If Venom hits well in China, over Justice League is still in sight.

Venom making more than Justice League would be hilarious.

I always really skeptical of them when they announced that they wanted to get into distribution, since the only real hit they had up until that point was Sausage Party, which was very much the antithesis of their usual business model (super cheap film that catered to a mass-market audience). If Beale Street Could Talk really ought to be the kind of movie they should focus more on, with small budgets but plenty of prestige, and then I glance over at what the budget on Vice is looking like (~$60 million) and I just have to sigh.

Saw Halloween this weekend. Wasn't overly impressed. Guess nothing will really hit the heights of the first movie.

Side note: If you're looking for some interesting horror, The Haunting of Hill House (10 episodes) on Netflix is really really good.

Awesome for Halloween grabbing the second highest R-rated horror OW. But damn, does it show what a monster IT was at the box office for a horror opening weekend.

Glad it did well. Sucks it could've have gotten little extra to snag that record from Venom.

Great work by Halloween. I still can't help but wonder what pushed it to the forefront of popular culture.

It always seemed to me like Michael Myers was a second-string player behind Jason and Freddy. Halloween 2007 only opened to 26M and H20 only did 16M.
