I wish they just had one big weapon pack with all the weapons in it. I got 3 of the 4 packs but it seems I have to buy ships to get all the weapons.

I definitely feel like Ubi could've been better off ditching the whole toy mechanic and just selling it on the game alone. Looks a great space/planet combat game, of which there aren't a lot of. Graphics and art style are cool. Starfox stuff... I know I was into it when they first unveiled the footage, but then was kinda meh once I realized all the toy to life integration. I think it'd have found a better audience just a straight $60 space combat game - especially since you can just play the game without them anyway.

That said, I'm totally getting it...just not at launch. Still need to finish Octopath and Dark Souls just came in the mail today. Will probably pick up around the holidays. While it will be sad to see a decent game bomb, hopefully that means I can swipe a physical starter kit from the bargain bin around then.

Also...anyone try the co-op on switch? how is it?
I'm playing most of the game in co-op and it holds up pretty well. It's still graphically pretty but the framerate isn't as stable, especially when there are a lot of enemies on screen (not entirely common thus far). It works really well if you're set on following the waypoints and doing a mission, but if you just want to take some time to explore and such, there is an annoying tether system that doesn't let you go too far from your partner. The co-op is drop in/out at anytime so I've been exploring in single player and advancing the story in co-op.

Dont you think they are sort of testing the waters with this though? I mean, they can easily relaunch it without the toys at a lower price and more content later on? Or do you think they missed their chance?

No, they did the opposite. If UbiSoft were testing the waters then they would have released the game without the toys to see if the game would be a success and then introduce the toys later as a way to sell DLC and extend the games life or in a sequel once their install base was high enough and the IP was well known.

Also, I dont think they could relaunch this in the future if this game is a huge flop. People now associate the game with the toys as the game was built from the ground up with the toys in mind and will think that they will be getting an inferior version without the toys. Also people who have already bought the game and toys will be pissed off because of the dropped support and would likely not buy any more games in the series in the future.

I think having Starfox in the switch version is going to be the only thing that will help the game sell on that platform and that switch sales will be much higher than on other platforms. Its the only reason I will be picking up the game. In terms of the future, if this has bombed hard on all other platforms I can see Ubi scrapping the IP and using the engine and assets in this game to just make a brand new StarFox game in collaboration with Nintendo.

Hope this does well, really having a good time with it. It's definitely everything NMS should have been. Sure, it doesn't have the scale, but it's much more focused and doesn't feel like....work.

So I think I've encountered some kind of game breaking bug or corrupted save file...Playing on Switch and I'm not that far in - Level 7 and I just started the quest to build a refinery. However, when I booted up my save, the dialogue and audio for the Star Fox mission started playing (even though I was on a surface of a planet, not in the space encounter). This happens every time, and I can play for 2-3 minutes and then the game crashes (generic message "The software was closed because an error occurred.") Tried rebooting the Switch and still getting the error.

Anyone else run into similar issues? Would suck to have to start over.

I'm a little surprised nobody's posted this video yet:

It's not a full-blown review or anything, just my favorite blue muppet, Arlo, gushing over Starlink and the toys like a fanboy. The amount of infectious squee in this video puts a smile on my face.

My copy crashed 13 times. I didn't get through the opening cutscene from a new game start even once.

Hoping they'll have stock to exchange tomorrow if redownloading the additional data doesn't fix it.

All the videos I've seen though have me so curious about this game.

Did you go back and get the plug you attached to the first one? You have to bring it with you each time for this one.

So is the Dreadnaught the final battle in the game? I like how this is all structured With the primes and the extractors app feeding the dreadnaught power.

I forgot which station the first one is at. Can you give me the name of the station again? I'm stuck on the final 2 canisters.

Oh hey yeah. This is the message im getting.

Reporting for duty. After having no issues over several sessions the last few days, tonight I got the "The software closed because an error occurred" message three play attempts in a row. According to some Googling, there have been isolated incidents of that message popping up for people on the Switch since launch. The most common fix seems to be formatting your SD card (after copying everything over to the PC for safekeeping, of course), which is what I'm in the process of doing - though it's taking hours, so I'll have to let the transfer finish overnight.

But it may not have anything to do with the SD card in this instance. Us three are already having the problem with Starlink, and someone on gamefaqs is asking about the exact same thing. As someone who reads video game forums every day, I've never once seen this issue talked about in relation to a specific Switch game before, so the fact that there are at least four of us now all talking about it in the span of a few hours makes me think it's a problem with Starlink in particular. Which is another oddity - I've not seen this error message reported until tonight, despite the game having been out for several days already. As far as I can tell, there wasn't a patch today that could have theoretically broken something.

Anyway, best of luck to everyone. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this soon!

As someone who works in marketing, that's not an easy thing to do at all. The time and resources to educate the public on that would be immensely expensive, not to mention new packaging, new shelf space, etc. It's not out of the question, but they definitely wouldn't have launched Starlink like this as a "testing the waters" thing, knowing they had a plan B of just relaunching it if need be..

Yeah, thats what I dont get though - how DID they actually launch this? I mean; I saw nothing about this anywhere except the Nintendo Direct and eshop. Meanwhile, I'm getting spammed with AC Odyssey ads.

Digital version is already a pretty good deal if you're not interested in the toys.

Yes! Bought it. Excellent on handheld!

That really is a logical step regardless, right? Or at least more Nintendo exclusive DLC

I went ahead and archived the game and then redownload the update. It seems like it may have corrected whatever is wrong? I've been able to play for about an hour now and it hasn't crashed yet.

Yeah, I haven't seen a single advertisement for this anywhere outside of Nintendo's channels. Granted, I didn't see anything for Skylanders either, but at least that had in-store displays for the toys.

Nice - I'm glad that worked for you!

Unfortunately, I've had worse luck. I woke up this morning after having finished the formatting and transfer process of my entire SD card... and after reinserting it into the Switch, the system doesn't even recognize the card. Now I'm trying to transfer everything over to the other spare SD card I have, but if that doesn't work, I'll probably have to send my entire Switch in for repairs. Joy!

Pros:

1. I'll have Red Dead 2 and Castlevania Requiem to fill my game time starting next week while my system is potentially out being fixed
2. The system would be back in time for Smash Bros.
3. I have NSO, so most of my saves are backed up

Cons:

1. Money
2. More importantly... MY 190 HOURS OF SPLATOON 2 DATA THAT CANNOT BE BACKED UP BEING AT RISK

Anyway, we'll see what happens! Maybe I'm overthinking it and this new data card transfer will work.

For now though, it's a bummer I'm not able to play more of Starlink over the weekend. After going back and forth so many times over whether I wanted to buy it or not, my early impressions were very positive. It's a pure joy to to explore and fight as Fox, so I'll be very excited to get back into playing this - whenever it may be.

Yeah, that was the first thing that I had tried, but I couldn't even get to the mission before it would crash - I'd be lucky to get 2-3 minutes of gameplay and I was far away from the mission. I think the issue might have been resolved though...will talk more about that down below.

I went ahead and archived the game and then redownload the update. It seems like it may have corrected whatever is wrong? I've been able to play for about an hour now and it hasn't crashed yet.

Rhennik really hope the second transfer works for you. That's rough....

So an update on my issues. Last night I tried the following:
  • First, I had tried rebooting the Switch - no luck there; game was still crashing.
  • Next, I deleted the game and reinstalled. Took a while to download, but when I finally had it back up, I was still getting the crash after 2-3 minutes of gameplay.
  • Finally, I went for a complete removal of the game - uninstalled the game and deleted my save file. Reinstalled, started a new game, and it was STILL crashing once I landed on the starting planet. Gave up last night, feeling a bit pissed that between the Starter set and the 5 dollar weapon expansion I picked up, I was looking at around an ~$85 paperweight.
This morning I booted up the game and it's working fine....on one hand I'm relieved, on the other hand, I may have deleted my save file for nothing. Super weird - I don't know enough about technology, but could it have been a server thing - pinging to confirm purchased items or something along those lines that could have been glitched and causing lockups? I don't know - it's just weird that valinthyne , it seems like yours just start working again without patches and now mine is working okay again....Weird.

It's a game aimed first and foremost at children, so I'm sure the bulk of their marketing was spent on TV/YouTube ads that kids would more likely see than adults

Loving the game, but I don't like that you are basically invincible in the game with the Starlink system. When your ship is going down, just change to another ship and it will recover. Rinse and repeat. Impossible to die if you cheese the system like that.

I guess one option is to just not do that. I didn't know the system worked like that though, good to know just in case lol

On the channels my kid watches (cartoon network, Disney xd, etc.) nintendo ads are on every day, all day - Mario kart, super Mario party, switch, 3ds, all the time. Not a single starlink ad.

Am I at a disadvantage for playing 2 pilots? I've been splitting my time between Fox and Razor, and I'm at the first dreadnought (level 8-10) but Fox is only level 5 and Razor is 4. I get rekt about 8 seconds after getting close to the ship.

Or at I supposed to grind all 3 planets before that?

Don't know if this was s good idea or not but was out today and picked up the Cerberus ship pack from gamestop. I think it was their exclusive. I really like the look of the ship and Razor seems like a cool character. Hope the weapon is good.

I do wonder how Ubisoft is pushing this game or if they're waiting until Black Friday or something. It's good and I hope not at least sells decently.

Really tiring out on this game quickly. About ten hours in and honestly all the missions are just blending into each other.

That was my primary issue. Each planet is just a new (albeit beautiful) skin. Repetition sets in fast, but the way it's all tied together does help to offset it a bit

The good news is, if you're 10 hours in, you're very likely past the halfway mark.

Been playing a bit.

Kinda hope Ubisoft make a full Star Fox game. With branching paths and whatnot. I'm liking the integration they pulled off, but I don't really care for the non-star Fox characters so far.

I'm waiting for either PC or the Switch version (digital) dropping in price. I want as many ships/parts as possible, but I honestly don't want to pay more than I pay for your average game.

I still don't get why they gimped the physical edition so much. I guess to make sure you buy the toys, but it just ruins the game itself.

Can I plop down my ship and pilot on the included stand but actually play the game with a separate set of joycons? Seems silly to have to hold up the ship for the entire length of my playtime.

Yes! You can play digitally. When it asks you to do so after first time set up you can just press A and procced as normal, which is good if you want to take the switch with you or simply cant be bothered to do it at home.

You will have to periodically check in the toys like once a week iirc.

Nearly done on the second planet. Yep, I'm slow. Goddamn reallife eating my time.

The game is really holding back some important mechanics from you. I know I'm technically still in the middle of the tutorial, but I really wish that wasn't the case. I'd have preferred a SINGLE tutorial planet, not a series of three planets in friggen sequence. This is taking ages.

Plus, I've unlocked a metric shitton of ship upgrades and am merging triples of my mods as often as I can, yet my coffers are still swelling like crazy. Might've been a bad idea to eradicate all red things on the map, now there's a sea of refineries and observatories, and they're all gonna be corrupted once I leave since I haven't busted the local Prime yet (can I even, at this stage of the game?) and the local dreadnaught is still way beyond my reach.

Currently rocking the ice and siege lift missile launcher combo. Sure, damage throughput is rather meh, but the elemental combos are nice against groups of enemies. Plus, it's just nice to be able to take at least two enemies out of the fight, floating around like a balloon or being frozen in place.

I'm secretly hoping for an FTL mode DLC/update. As in, grab a pilot/ship/loadout, then race through say three random planets with the baddies and an evil timer always nipping right at your exhaust port, desperately nabbing random loot and doing random quests in an attempt to prepare for a final dreadnaught battle at the end.

I have one world left to clear, and recently, I've been sticking with the Gauss Gun mk.2 and Levitator combo, which has been insanely effective. I had to swap out the Shredder mk.2 for the Levitator because the latter just wasn't doing the damage it was earlier in the game.
