I hope I can afford the Mix 3 in 2019 or another high end China phone and live in the future until Samsung pushes this in 2020.

It did for like a year. Then some Chinese manufacturers got tired of the notch and went ahead doing their own thing.

Anyways, Samsung has already went on record saying that they will are not going to rush things from a hardware perspective anymore until it's ready. That's why they didn't come out with the in screen fingerprint scanner first. That's also why they've been also pushing back the phone with the bendable display.

It's cool that they are investing in this tech now. The future will be crazy phone wise with batteries that last 50% longer with excellent performance for years, 5g speeds, all screen displays, in a more durable package (Samsung has been testing indestructible displays).
Yeah sounds good for Samsung. I was joking about the iphone thing. It's shit as far as I'm concerned.

This is great news. Now they just need to dump all of their bloatware and go pure android. I know TouchWiz has gotten way better, but I still want all their pre-installed shit gone.

I recently tried out the Samsung S9 and technically it's amazing, but I never will get used to that bloated OS with x pages, pop ups or weird pre-installed apps.
Otherwise I'd love to try out one of their smartphones.

Cool that Samsung is showing off this tech, as this is the natural progression on what screens will be next.

Pretty sad how many people in this thread need to make it an Apple vs Android argument, instead of just enjoying the tech. Tribalism at its finest.

Eh, the topic title already made it an apple vs Android argument.

I don't think Apple or Samsung are in any rush to offer "indestructible" screens. They make too much money from people breaking their phones and requiring an upgrade.

As for notch-less ... yeah ok neat, but we're also reaching a point I think where it's like all these phones do the same shit and really they're getting to a point where you really don't need to upgrade every 2 years.

If they are demoing the screen now it might be a bit late for the S10.

Samsung will probably sell the panel to Apple Next year

This isn't that surprising. I think the whole industry wants to go in this direction.

If Samsung is claiming this will be in their 2019 lineup (in a single device) then that is impressive, otherwise whatever.

I havent seen anyone, anyone at all saying they are working towards under screen cameras nor speakers. Links?

I have seen the development of underscreen fingerprint scanners everywhere though.

You can use different skin and they are working on an Android One version

People have been complaining about TouchWiz and its successors forever, nevermind the fact you can override it by downloading an alternative like Nova Launcher from Play Store in a matter of seconds. Hide apps you don't care for and enough options to suit just about anyone.

I don't think I have used the stock S series launcher since the S1, I just download Nova and forget it.

Sharp did in 2014.

But that's another area where I wonder if a 'screen vibration based speaker' can produce as good quality sound at as high of a volume as a 'regular' speaker.

What really is the point of speakers under the screen? Is the sound quality going to be better?
I've never heard an under the screen speaker, but could allow for much larger speakers. If you could have a speaker the size of a display, or even just a decent portion of it, it would sound a lot better than relegated to a bezel.

And in 2020 Apple will create

Under screen finger print reader.
Under screen camera.
Under screen speakers.

ALL PRAISE APPLE

It's almost like people think Apple only started working on it after other companies announced it, rather than they had been working on it for many years and other companies almost always beat them to the market.

I just got the iPhone xs and I don't mind the notch at all. I forget it's even there most of the time.

FaceID works very good.
I don't notice it while ever using it because it's just up the with system operation stuff, but there's no question that it'd look better without it, so when they can get rid of it, they will.

It's a bit like the camera bump on the back. I object to it on more of an impulse feeling than a reality. I'm going to have a case on, the phone is never going to rock on a flat surface, but it still feels like bad design.

Also, everyone calls it a notch, I always see it as my screen having horns.

Speakers everywhere, cameras I guess are just always in industry discussions about the near future. Assuming the tech is not impossible and going by the importance of screen space, it's inevitable that under screen sensors is where the tech goes.

Obviously if Apple hasn't showed PowerPoint slides about it then they never worked on it, lol.

The notch was always a stop gap. Instead of just waiting a few years because phones are released yearly or every 6 months now manufacturers felt they had to do something.

It's ugly and I'm glad I'll end up avoiding it in the end.

Now Samsung keep that headphone jack a bit longer and we might have a winner.

I'd think with additional R&D that it could create high quality sound, or stuff speakers behind the screen somehow. As an aside, it's a shame the aquos crystal line only had one model come to the states, and sprint only at that.

Yep. I cant wait until these solutions come out and start spreading. I said it when the notch was first announced: "People will praise this ugly garbage and swear it makes no difference, but will cheer the day the tech advancements allows it to go away."

I still await. Absolutely no one is going to cry over the loss of that notch, even though they will pretend its the bees knees today. It will be just like the people who shat all over large screened phones.

Well that's kinda me because I hate big phones lol. Happy they exist for some but the Galaxy range is big enough for me.

Since a bezel-free display requires internally folding the screen, idk if the 3.5mm jack will be feasible. Granted, Samsung's engineers are the best in the business so...

Nobody - not Apple, nor users of the iPhone are saying the notch is "the bees knees".

I can assure you, almost nobody likes that Notch. It's just that many simply don't care, as long as the tech that's packed up there works well and reliably.

The UI on their current phones is a huge improvement over TouchWiz. I'm someone who used to hate Samsung phones because of that god awful interface.

They fixed every complaint I had with it and my Note 8 has been one of the best phone's I've ever used.

Sure, it's not perfect, Bixby is useless and the updates could be a bit quicker, but at least the phone doesn't give me a headache trying to create a folder anymore.

Obviously if Apple hasn't shown anything, no PowerPoint, no teaser, no prototype, no patent, then they've clearly been working on it for several years.
Hence why most of their phone's parts are done by other manufacturers.

I honestly dont know how people can get excited for new phones anymore, i think that anything above the Galaxy S7/S8 level is like, unnecessary.

I'm actually there with you for the most part. I upgraded recently to an LG G7 ThinQ and frankly I don't see myself getting another phone for a good long while, at least 3 years. I just don't see what else a phone can do, organically anyway, that would make me want to get a new one next year.

I specify organically because I feel like a big part of the reason why carriers and OEMs cut off certain phones from the latest Android builds is specifically so you'll upgrade...fuckers >_<

That's why I actually appreciate a notch on the iPhone X, it is only there because the technology is not there to put the camera and speakers under a display. We all know the future is all phones being nothing more then entire glass lab
