Rockstar Lincoln, a UK-based studio that has been handling a lot of the quality assurance testing for Red Dead Redemption 2, is swearing off an approach that many employees say they had interpreted as mandatory overtime.

That change comes a result of a studio meeting at the end of a week full of unusually public discussion about the work hours put into the creation of what is likely to be the hottest big-budget video game of the last several years.

Way more at the link.

anyone who has played a highschool sport or been in a club or *had a job* know that a lot of things that are optional arent really optional

That part about making yourself look better for progression basically makes the overtime mandatory if you want any hope of being promoted smh.

Kind of like how with casual contracts you're technically allowed to refuse any given shift, but if you did it you would be fired

While overtime may not technically be mandatory, you're probably seen as a weak link by management if you don't work as much as possible. And that very likely doesn't translate to a long, fruitful career with the company.

*Optional

*-Safety of your workspace and all items within cannot be guaranteed if overtime is not taken.

If the employee said no, then the answer obviously is no. The thing is that they're not gonna say no, they'd never say no…because of the implication.

It's never really optional if you want to keep your job or be hired again.

They should just say ..optional but expected.

I don't think the Kotaku title is that great. Seems like the main thing here is that Rockstar is changing their policy at this office in response to the public discussion.

Kotaku said:
Rockstar management described the situation differently to Kotaku, saying that overtime was not mandatory but was part of a system in which the overtime was requested and scheduled by the bosses, but that employees could say no to it.

Wow what an awful system. I can imagine people not being comfortable saying no!

Other main thing that studio with "the worst" crunch did 50+h weeks with max of 3 days of overtime per week and 1 weekend day in a month and all paid.

So people who have entrenched themselves in their opinion. There seems to be nothing that will change your mind.

So is the whole conversation pointless?

From the reddit post:
Now, here is a breakdown of the hours I have personally been working so far in my time at Rockstar:

1 x Week - 5/5 Weekday overtime, 2/2 Weekend overtime (8:30 finishes) = 70 hours paid, 81.5 hours actual

8 x Week - 5/5 Weekday overtime, 1/2 Weekend overtime (5:30 finish) = 57.5 hours paid, 65 hours actual

38 x Week - 3/5 Weekday overtime, 0.5/2 Weekend overtime (5:30 finish) = 48.75 hours paid, 56 hours actual
Isn't that illegal in the EU? 48 hours should be the maximum on an average of a few months.

Edit: Average of 17 weeks normally.

I'm sorry but it's QA...

It's awesome that they are no longer going to ask people to do overtime, but QA is not development work, which is what the previous topic was about. QA is a very different job with very different expectations, I would argue.

Sure, this is just one department in one studio. We had people from other departments talk about crunch too.

Pretty much.

This kind of stuff is always implied. Managers need to send people home instead of expecting them to take the lead if people start staying overtime.

Edit: crunch in the tech industry is just how things are done. It sucks but it's the norm not the exception.

So weird that they would change their policy on this. Y'know, it's almost as if Rockstar recognized there was a problem with too much mandatory overtime or something.

Also that reddit post is a good demonstration of why Rockstar providing the Guardian with their reported hours was completely pointless - people in these situations chronically underreport or don't report their overtime at all.

So QA shouldn't get decent workers rights then? No one in any job should have to work 70-80 hour weeks. Especially if some of that is unpaid.

Lol yes if your boss schedules you for overtime you are going to assume working that overtime is mandatory. No one looks at their schedule and is like 'nah boss, not coming in that day, sorry' and expects to keep that job for long.

The fact that managers were scheduling people for hours and just expected them to say 'no' at some point and think that was an OK thing to do is bullshit.
