Can't wait until Venom's success inspires Sony to tell Disney to fuck off.

I'm part of the problem though. My friend convinced us to go out and see how bad of a trainwreck it really was the other day.

Could still have a monster opening day. Been hearing my friends talk about this as much as they did for Venom.

The marketing was awful.

Stupid dancing Chris Hemsworth, the girl from The Color Purple singing apropos of nothing, and they managed to make Jon Hamm look ugly.

And the title is a mouthful. Still better than the White Boy Rick commercials, though.

I don't think there is any universe in which Bad Times is a hit unless it was directed by someone with a very faithful audience like the Coens or Tarantino. It's totally a movie that develops a nice devoted following and reputation as people watch it at home.

I'd agree. It's a damn fine B flick that just won't find an audience via theatres in this day and age. I'm hoping people discover this movie once it moves into the direct to streaming realm, it's put together pretty well and features some great performances from some previously unknown actors (Cynthia Erivo, Lewis Pullman).

I'd say anywhere from $40-55 mil for Spider-Verse opening weekend. It's been slowly building hype.

Deadline has 32M for Halloween on Friday and 77M for the weekend. Venom also opened to around 32M on Friday.

Edit: I wrote deadpool for some reason.

I need help, BoxOfficeEra. I work all weekend so I am going to treat myself to a movie tonight. Do I go First Man or Venom? (I've already seen A Star is Born). I'm not super interested in NASA or the moon landing or shit like that, but I love me some prestige awards movies. And I'm not really into superheroes, either, but I'm oddly curious about experiencing Venom, if that makes any sense.

Kinda surprised box office put early estimation of spider verse around 17-27m almost same as mortal engines. Way too low

I think it has potential to breakout to 100m

Yeah, I don't see it going anywhere near 100m, but I do think they're a little low on it.

Interested to see where tracking lands on Bumblebee and Aquaman.

Code:
Hunter Killer $7,500,000 -17% $20,000,000 -23%
Johnny English Strikes Again $3,250,000 -19% $7,100,000 -19%
Tyler Perry's Nobody's Fool $13,500,000 -10% $36,000,000 -10%
The Girl in the Spider's Web $14,000,000 -7% $40,000,000 -11%
Dr. Seuss' The Grinch $70,000,000 -11% $290,000,000 -5%
Overlord $10,500,000 -25% $30,000,000 -29%
Ouch. None of these are all that surprising, but come on Girl in the Spider's Web, I'm rooting for you.

Code:
Mortal Engines $16,000,000 $55,000,000

The Mule $14,000,000 $80,000,000
Second Act $10,000,000 $40,000,000
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse $22,000,000 $90,000,000
I think that The Mule is a bit optimistic, but who knows. American Sniper did do wonders and this could appeal to that audience.
Mortal Engines is also a bit on the high side to me.

I don't expect Spiderverse to get anywhere near $100m, but $17-$27m definitely seems too low.
boxoffice.com aren't great with animations, they also did a pretty poor job with Venom (which is currently $15M ahead of their final long range total)

Just watched Venom today and man, critics made it out to be some vile shit but I actually enjoyed it quite a lot. I guess that's why I never take the opinion of movie critics seriously and always go with my gut feeling.

Tom Hardy puts the movie on his back and goes all out with some Face/Off Nic Cage level acting. All of his interactions with the symbiote are the best parts of the film.

I was thinking 40-60 (closer to 60 though?), but maybe the movies hype has died down a bit. I feel like the first trailer was the best at selling the movie to the audiences, frankly.

Edit: meant to say 60 mb

Depending on international holds this weekend, and on China, Venom has a shot at topping Justice League worldwide.

I honestly think people underestimate Hardy as a draw. I think hes one of the few pretty bankable actors out there

So Hate You Give has an A+ CinemaScore, but with a 5.9 imdB and 65% RottenTomatoes audience score.

Hmm, I wonder what the culprit is. So mystifying.

The Grinch has that much hype eh?

Illumination drowns people with adverts and merchandising to make sure people are aware the film is coming out. I swear they put more effort in advertising than they do actually making the film. It's going to be quite big because people still like Illumination despite their films never rising above mediocre, and can sometimes hit downright terrible (The Lorax for example). But legs will be the interesting one. Obviously being christmas focused it'll have that relevance going into December. But it's going to be competing with Ralph a few weeks after launch which has all of the disney princesses, and that general very good disney quality going for it as well. We'll see. I'm not rooting for this film myself.

This poster though:

Reminds me a little too much of a certain other poster.

Damn, $80m ow! Also, holy shit, Halloween's budget is only $10m?!? Wow is it going to make a killing at the box office (npi).

Surprised at the Halloween budget. Would have thought JLC would get half that just for the role. Is she getting a big back end cut (I know she is a credited EP on the film)?
