I haven't seen Casablanca, or any of The Godfathers, and probably a few other well-regarded classics of cinema. Part of it is just a general interest in newer releases and "keeping up" with current film discussions, but another part of it is trying to watch these legendary films in proper circumstances, with no distractions or other obligations to keep me from giving my time and attention to the film. It's hard to clear out one's schedule for a 3-hour film like The Godfather when stuff like work, family, friends, errands, hobbies, etc. take up so much of the day.

This can apply to any medium as well, not just films.

Movie-wise, not much. I'm the opposite of you - I think I've watched one or two "new" movies in the past five years. I usually watch "classics"/pre-1970 film.

Book-wise, I have no read most classics. I don't really enjoy reading fiction, sadly.

Also OP a lot of classic movies are 90 minutes in length. Not everything is Gone with the Wind!

I have blu rays of Casablanca and Gone With the Wind(though I have seen this once many years ago) sitting around that I've been meaning to watch, but it's hard to find the time. Have the novel of Gone With the Wind too that I am slowly chipping away at.

The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon.

Have always wanted to, but haven't yet had the time with other much more pressing reads.

Although, the more I think about it, the less inclined I am to delve into it, having read much of Mary Beard's works on Rome and other modern historians.

I've tried and failed to watch the whole of The Godfather at least 3 times. I haven't seen any of The Usual Suspects

I haven't got around to watching any Kurosawa

Yeah, the only Kurosawa I've actually seen is Seven Samurai and Yojimbo, haven't seen the rest. There are some Kubrick films I haven't seen either, Eyes Wide Shut, Barry Lyndon, or anything pre-2001. I haven't seen all of Lynch's films yet either (just Inland Empire and the real obscure stuff).

I can't stand 24 to be honest. Totally exploited a lot of post-9/11 anxiety and not in a particularly thoughtful way. iirc they even ran ads that were like "they could be next door." and plots about Muslim American suburban families being secret terrorists. Better left behind if you ask me.

Frank Miller's Daredevil run is mine. Ive read his minis like Born Again, but just havent gotten around to reading his actual run yet. Plan too once I get the omnis though.

Been doing a 24 re-watch these last few weeks lol. The show gets much better after season 1. Season 1 isnt bad by any means, but it feels alot smaller compared to the rest of the show. Also, they only got like the first 18 episodes picked up originally, so they had to add additional episodes after getting the greenlight to do 24. Season 5 is by far the best.

I wouldn't read that book unless you are a scholar of Roman historiography - any book written in the past 50 year is more accurate. Gibbon was very biased towards Enlightenment values and got a lot of things wrong to prove his points.

Still haven't read All the Pretty Horses, Lord of the Rings, the Iliad, Ficciones, or any number of other literary classics.

Most of the classic or influential movies I watched during my film studies courses in college. But some that I can think of off the top of my head are The Big Lebowski, any of the 1960s Clint Eastwood westerns, Raging Bull, Fargo, and Chinatown.

As for TV shows, I have no idea. I've really scaled back the number of shows that I've watched, and none of the big ones in the past (The Wire, Breaking Bad, Lost, Star Trek, etc) are shows that I'm particularly interested in.

see Paths of Glory and Dr. Strangelove, they're dff. worth it imo

Strangelove is my favorite Kubrick film

I find that the more classics I read/watch/listen to/etc... the more classics I discover and add to my "to do" list.

I did see the first Godfather but found it pretty boring. Yes, I'll admit, The Sopranos spoiled me.

I also haven't seen Citizen Kane, but more importantly I've never seen Friday the 13th Part 2 (which I'm currently correcting thanks to AMC).

TV: West Wing
Books: A LOT. :( - I always have in my mind to read classic novels but I read way less than I would like.
Movies: Any war-themed movies (no interest), most westerns (very little interest, but have enjoyed a couple). Other than those, I've seen a lot of the big classics from the 20th century I'd say.

I generally prefer older movies any way, so new releases I've seen from 21st century I can probably count on both hands. If something is so amazing, it will stand the test of time and it will float in to my orbit sooner or later, if not; no big deal, there's thousands of other films to see. I don't really care about spoilers and prefer to get in on something once the hype has died down.

I had been watching designated survivor and really liking it and was told I really should watch 24. So far so good!

I've seen/read a lot of the name checks in this thread and trust me when I say many of you are in for some treats. (Casablanca, Kurosawa films, Dr Strangelove)

I haven't gotten around to checking out Godfather 2 yet (I've seen the first one though)

Miller's Daredevil run and Walt Simonson's Thor runs are other classics I've meant to check out but haven't hit yet.

I'll also go with the Godfather. Although I've seen Mafia!, so I think I get the gist.

I haven't watched all of the lord of the rings, Harry Potter or Star Wars movies. Only bits and pieces from each.

Should probably fix that one day.
