Battlefield V being a completely behind schedule mess makes a lot more sense now.

EA will probably let them twist in the wind rather than go out and invest in new talent.

That's interesting, I wonder did Battlefront 2 kill it or EA don't expect to keep the license so aren't greenlighting a 3rd.

The license is going to expire in 2023-2024, the deal was signed in December 2013 tho.
They still have enough time for Battlefront 3 and another studio at EA can make Battlefront 3.

Tbh I'd be slightly ashamed to have worked on BF2 even if I had nothing to do with the practices. It was a largely embarrassing moment in gaming history. But it seems like its just new studios opening up, clearly offering incentives to move onto their studios.

That's a pretty silly view. If I had worked on such a massive project, and gotten through the problems it had, I would definitely not hide that or be ashamed of it. Rather the opposite.
Development projects are hard, and you absolutely doesn't count only the flawless ones.

Who do you think could do it instead of DICE? Or more importantly as quick?
Respawn and Bioware have their hands full. Motive I guess? But I doubt they can match DICE's pace.

I was thinking about EA Motive yes, they have 2 studios now, one is working on a new IP with Jade Raymond and the other is still expanding, there's EA Vancouver as well, but they are working on ex-Visceral SW game.
I think at least 2-3 SW games are coming from EA.

Good for them.

DICE was kind of king of the hill in Stockholm. The only real big name dev. Not shocked that as soon as other big names start investing in the area people start jumping ship.

I know of its quality. But its like your child getting caught doing something stupid. Its still an embarrassing moment, even if you had nothing to do with it. Grooming children into gambling isn't embarrassing? If that isn't then I don't really know what is.

Holy shit some of the hot takes in this thread... Those people can fuck off, proper bastards they are.

Of course people come and go, even long term employees. Especially when many of your old friends and/or work mates are setting up a new studio right next to yours. It is a possibility to get fresh experiences, a chance to learn something new and challenge yourself.

I very much doubt that DICE is in any trouble, people working there seem to be enjoying it. I'd like to work for DICE too, if it weren't located to the west of best country in the world...

It's probably worth noting that the average salary at some of the other studios is quite a bit lower than at EA DICE (Just under 60KSEK/month) vs 46-48K at Starbreeze and Avalanche, and Paradox and THQ at the 38-40K range. (source)

Do you seriously think EA is going to kill 2 AAA studios with over 1200+ employees? Come on.

At the same time? Probably not, but they fired 1500 people in 2009, so closing a couple of studios and firing 1200 people is not out of the realms of possibility.

Of course, this would need Bioware and DICE to severely underperform with mutliple games for that to happen. Mass Effect Andromeda was considered to be a financial success and Battlefront 2 probably did fairly well as well, so I don't see it happening.

40 isnt that much too me on DICE, they work on one of the best videogame engines, BF and star wars, I imagine movements are normally on it.
Cheers to ppl at dice, there is a trend of shitting on EA which I can def understand, but they make good core for games.

5.7% turnover, or even if the number is higher by a few points, isn't really that surprising for any medium/big sized company. Kind of a weird news story.

Battlefield 5 is really gonna be the big test, at this point the stuff that has happened with battlefront 2 is done and either DICE and EA have learned from it or they haven't. I have grave doubts as to how the market is gonna receive BF5 but I'm frequently wrong on that kinda stuff so we'll find out in 2-3 months once the dust settles. If BF5 is received well and sells well then I think a lot of employees will feel vindicated and happy, if it crashes and burns then I'm not sure what DICE is gonna do.

All eyes on Anthem I guess. I have a feeling that there will be some "Time Savers" nestled right in between a slog of repetitive grind.

Its not like they don't deserve it. They, Activision, and Ubisoft are the Axis of Evil when it comes to predatory business practices in gaming.

2K gets pass because..?

I assume you include Blizzard in Activision.

Then there is R* with their Shark Cards and soon to be Chip Stacks (or some such for RDR2).

As I mentioned in the OP, it's actually 10%+ for a company that is well-known for having a very low layover rate.

Good. Workers need to show that they won't tolerate absurd work schedules to meet unrealistic deadlines, and having more protections and options will move the industry towards more sustainable development cycles. If EA wants releases more often, make more studios that work on separate projects over a longer period of time.
That's already how DICE works.

All those poor people wanted was to develop RalliSport Challenge 3 but instead EA forced them to switch immediately to Star Wars: Battlefront III after the completion of Battlefront II. ;-)

Well, maybe not exactly what happened.

They need to drop the campaign, and focus on the MP - the thing BF was always good at. Maybe think about moving to an evolving service model.

You'll just get people howling in the streets of the internet that the SP stuff is not there. The question then becomes are you willing to take that initial PR hit if everything else you do offer in the MP space is on point?

Sounds like theirs getting paid. This is normal turnover. With the new opportunities, why not test the market?

I think they wanted Battlefront 2 to be an ongoing platform so they could free up Criterion and Motive for other games they were already slated for.

But like... they're not doing enough there for that to work out.

Blops 4 seems to be doing just fine on that front.

DICE should leave the SP campaigns to the Bad Company spin-offs. Maybe even let another EA studio take care of them, just like they're doing with the BR mode, while themselves going all-in with the MP.

What was the Battlefront 2 debacle? Did they have to redo the game due to the lootboxes or was it poorly received even AFTER that was changed due to gameplay issues?

The progression system was completely based around the lootbox system, so when it was gutted it had to all be redone. Was criticized after it went too as people where just AFKing because you got fuck all for doing anything but finishing a match.

If it's not named a BF numbered release I'm sure it won't be too much of a problem.

Ah, I see. Really a shame what has happened with both of the BF games... it was like a dream come true when it was announced DICE was making a new Battlefront game. In my opinion, they should have just made something along the lines of Battlefield 3 or 4 with a Star Wars skin... that's what I was initially hoping for at least. Played Battlefront 1 a bit, but it just didn't click with me. Was too busy with other things to even check out Battlefront 2.

Let's hear it for EA who very likely forced DICE to make a game grounded in MTs and other bullshit practices, instead of a game that longtime Battlefront fans and Star Wars fans alike had been waiting on forever.

I mean, Ubisoft set up next door with one of their old studio heads, and I imagine the idea had to be to poach the studio.

That said, going into this gen, DICE was pitched as adding Mirror's Edge and Star Wars to their line-up, and they seem to be back to only Battlefield now, so that's going to drive a lot out the door.
There was a universe where Mirror's Edge was going to become a major franchise?

Dude... my fucking heart...

DICE has been patching the hell out of Battlefront 2 and it's a decent game that I now enjoy from time to time.
