Mine came relatively unscathed, but definitely getting one of those soon.

So did Risers get delayed everywhere or something? My Walmart preorder is delayed to mid November.

Yeah, turns out some Walmarts near me have it in stock. Guess I'll cancel my pre-order and just stop by one this week.

What the hell though?

Our local walmart has them in along with a demo unit set up to try it on, only one game and 1P controls though. Seemed really cool but the screen protector already had a huge gouge on it in spite of it looking like it wasn't even fully set up to play yet. And it seems like replacing the default controls would be almost mandatory, the button was super squeaky. Height seemed perfect when put on a coffee table.

When I think back to EVO this summer, none of the units had art that rubbed off that I noticed and they got heavy use those days. It wasn't until TGS did we see that. I wonder if they changed the painting /printing process on later production units that caused this.

I'm not a fan of the plexi over the panel, I kinda hope they fix the paint or whatever in the future

So whats the word on these? Was gonna pass in favor of an Alpha Cade but apparently I got one free. There was some mixup with my CC and WM sent me my order (that I wanted to cancel anyway!) and never charged my card.

Was going to sell it but I dunno, since I already have it it's MIGHTY tempting to crack it open (haven't opened it yet, just double checking if Wal Mart says anything over the next few days)

The joysticks seem cheaply made from what i've researched, but I already saw a youtube tutorial with $40 amazon replacement sticks of much higher quality. so i could always do that if i keep it.

I got mine and it has some messed up pixels in the bottom left side of the screen. It isnt really noticeable while playing but im going to send them a couple of pictures to see if i can get a fixed screen. Cant hurt to try.

I really wish they had plexiglass marquees so we could light them up. Seems so strange to get everything else looking so original but then losing one of the most recognizable arcade features.

They are meant to be cheap replicas that can be an almost impulse purchase buy for nostalgia. Yeah they could create a more accurate cabinet, but that is actually even more niche than the market they are selling to.

They could expand to a more deluxe line for people who want it all, but I think they found a product for a specific market that will probably work for them.

Plexiglass is cheaper and lighter than wood

That wasn't really the point of what I said, but not arguing, yeah it is lighter than wood l.
I thought you were saying that these are meant to be cheap replicas, so making it more expensive and deluxe would make it more niche. But replacing the solid wood marquee with a plexiglass one would actually make it cheaper, it wouldn't have to be more expensive. They are already making it super accurate in how it looks like the original arcade machine, it's really the whole point of the things (otherwise they could just make a cheap emulation box you hook up to your TV), so why did they mess up the marquees, one of the things that really identifies arcade machines?

I just saw these at my local Walmart and tried the demo station.

Color me shocked, the build quality is quite good for $300. I'd probably just rip out the guts and replace them with whatever I want to play.

I thought you meant lit up for some reason.

Different part from a different supplier, just for that piece which would probably just add more complexity as well as cost side they'd have to deal with even more suppliers due to another part having to be put in from somewhere else... Might not break the bank, but I'm thinking that they didn't feel that it had to be that accurate expecially since it's not as if that plexi would have been lit up.

It would be something that we could easily mod to light up if we wanted, something that isn't an option now, not without creating a custom wood marquee box.

True. . But that particle board piece is what the whole top is attached to. If it was made of plexi, it wouldn't work. You would need the plexi in front of the thing holding it together, or a piece hollowed out to hold it etc.

COOLTOY's channel had this the other day and mentioned it was releasing this week? There is a SKU out there if you want to keep an eye on brickseek. I'm betting that one will get gobbled up fast.

I played with the Street Fighter 2 one at my local Walmart. Game played fine and you get some of the different versions with it, but the build quality of the cabinet did not look good imo. Felt very cheap.

I really don't understand the appeal of these machines. Wouldn't you guys want something as authentic in size and feel as an original cabinet? I mean, an old school arcade cab with....an LCD screen....really? Wow. I would just save up a little more and get an arcade MAME cab, guys. This thing aint worth it IMO.

It's the same answer as when people use this same line of thinking to tell people to just make a retropie in discussions about the classic mini consoles. Some people just want a simple device that just works without having to tool around with shit.

As nice as a homemade MAME cabinet is in comparison, they are more expensive, bulkier, and require a lot more work than what these need. Especially considering the process of buying and ripping the arcade boards if you haven't already done that.

And to be fair, an original cab would use a lot more electricity and give off a lot more heat than one of these.

Look, I get where you're coming from, but the shit is NOT as straightforward as that. Getting retropie with your collection setup to run is hardly idiot proof, the UI often needs quite a bit of customization, and that's before we talk about the cabinet. Go find an old CRT monitor, takes time, before we talk about any cost. And a full size arcade cab, if you are not cutting, drilling, and putting together yourself, is a large outlay of money. Hardly "a little more" than the Arcade1up machines. And have we mentioned about getting art onto the cab?

Sure, they only ape authenticity and are limited in the games on it, but they are legal, fairly idiot proof, and at a reasonable price point.

The modding scene for these took off real fast, but I wish it was a slightly less involved process.

Some people aren't looking for a full size cab.

It fits my space perfectly. I changed the buttons/sticks, stuck a raspberry pi in mine and am perfectly happy. I don't have room for a bigass arcade cabinet.

I get the smaller size, but the LCD screen... ehh... at least for me the CRT screen is like half of the point of trying to emulate the arcade feeling.

This reminds me, in our office, one of the game directors (Kamiya, some of you might know) installed an arcade machine. It had Bubble Bobble but the hardware for that game broke so while he's getting it fixed we got now Pitfall II. I'm surprised he hasn't posted any photo to Twitter. It's pretty fun playing the thing, and I enjoy the sound coming from it (the arcade is actually quite close to my seat so I hear a little bit of the sounds when people play it).

I don't have the interest or desire to buy a full arcade machine or build one. I would totally be happy with a smaller one like these that just have a couple awesome games I like.

In my opinion the price is about right for what you get. Unfortunately having Street Fighter stuck on "balls hard" difficulty with no access to the arcade options was the deal breaker for me.

I tried the ETA Prime mod and it is mostly there, but I'm running into a weird issue. I set the buttons for player 1 and 2 on my raspberry pi, and the controls work in the menus until I play a game. The controls become reversed for player 2. I go back to the menu and change the controls for player 2, and they work fine, but then player 1 controls become reversed.

I checked the button wires and they match each other, so I'm not sure what the issue is. Is this a known problem with the raspberry pi?

I saw the Galaga/Galaxian unit at my local Walmart today, I put in a few minutes of playtime, and I must say I was pleasantly surprised.

The cabinet (with "Galaga" on the marquee) was attractive, and would be instantly recognizable to fans of the original arcade machines. It's obviously smaller than an original machine, but it appeared to have very good build quality, although there was some wear around the joystick area. The joystick and buttons looked and felt great, and control response was excellent.

There might be concerns about some of the other models (what were they thinking with the Defender controls?), but this particular unit gets the "thumbs up" seal of approval from me. A big Galaga or Galaxian fan would be very happy to get one of these machines under the tree.

Nice find DarkKnight, just scooped up one myself. This is easily the best BF deal for a Arcade 1Up cab thus far.

Is it worth ordering a Street Fighter cabinet for modding if I don't know a soldering iron from a curling iron? Not sure how involved the process is.

From what I've seen online, modding a Arcade 1Up cab is pretty straightforward (at least with the Street Fighter II units). No soldering is required and most of the required parts you'll need are pretty affordable to buy on Amazon. Check out RivalBoss or ETAPrime's tutorial vids on modding the 1Up cabs, it should answer most of your questions.
