After 5 years Renault admit their PU has reached a development dead end and will bring a completely new one next season.

It does sound like they're changing the layout, probably using info from that FIA hack they hired to go the split turbo Merc / Honda route:

This is only for the rest of the 2018 season but it makes me wonder if it was either: just going to be for USA but McLaren negotiated it for longer; or building up to a title sponsorship in 2019. Perhaps sugar is the new tobacco.
