Streets of Rage 1 and 2 (2 especially) are the greatest side-scrolling beat-em-ups ever. 3 was weak and pretty weird, but still a decent enough game. I played the Final Fight games after I first played SoR and they didn't compare in terms of moveset or feel in my opinion.

Bias aside, how can anyone deny Final Fight? Especially on the Sega CD?

Imagine a 10 year old kid listening to this track coming out from a old school sound system hooked to the Sega CD. It was such a jump from the Genesis and SNES.

My ears were in heaven.

SoR, of course, but this post deserves more attention. Final Fight CD's soundtrack is amazing, and goddamn does it deserve more attention.

Final Fight gets a nod as one of the first to do it well. Pro-tip, hold up or down to combo into a throw/suplex for crowd control.

SoR1 is behind FF1 for me, but starting with SoR2 it's way better than the FF series (which I still like.) FF3 takes some elements from SoR and it's a lot of fun.

Oh, and the only version of SoR3 that I own or acknowledge is Bare Knuckle 3.

The best part of Final Fight CD is that someone read the line "Hee hee hee, Mr. Haggar" straight through instead of actually giggling and then saying Mr. Haggar.

Final Fight, only because I grew up with Nintendo systems.

I only played SoR last year and I thought it is a good game but still like Final Fight more.

I see nothing wrong there. Lol

Kinda telling how Final Fight 2 and 3 always get sidelined in these discussions.

I wish I could figure out what movies the Final Fight samples are from. The late 80s was the wild west of sampling when nobody cared about copyright, and for instance Golden Axe liberally samples voices straight from Conan and Rambo.

You can still hear parts of the background music in the scream where the final boss flies out the window, so it's clearly from some movie.

Streets of Rage is my favorite series of all-time, with Streets of Rage 2 being my favorite game of all-time. Final Fight, I think is junk in comparison.

My #2 and #3 beat 'em ups are Guardian Heroes and Chronicles of Mystara.

As much as I love FF1 I've gotta give it to SOR overall. Kinda sad FF never got a beefy arcade sequel considering all the great CPS2 belt scrollers Capcom pumped out afterward. The SNES games are good but imagine what a CPS2 FF2-3 could've delivered.

I like Final Fight more especially the sequels they added alot of improvements. Final Fight 3 has an amazing soundtrack. I always felt Streets of Rage felt janky control wise.

Streets of Rage forever!
First one was disappointing IMHO but SoR2 and Japanese version of SoR3 are simply awesome.

I personally prefer Final Fight, in particular Final Fight 3 is the pinnacle of 90's beat-em-ups for me. But I know Streets of Rage 2 is really the better game. This track of Final Fight 3 is my favorite from the Snes era:

Love FF characters, but SoR is the better beat em up by far... On consoles at least.

Playing Final Fight in the Beat Em Up collection really made me appreciate how smooth that game plays. Plus, the graphics/sprites are really beautiful and the game just holds up well (like most arcade games of that era). I voted for SoR though just because 1 and 2 just blew me away at the time, especially the audio and the huge jump in quality visually from 1 to 2, almost like they were on different hardware.

Also, SoR had the GOAT boxart, so much that Final Fight 2 SNES had to copy, sewer goblin included.

I prefer the Final Fight series. I grew up with it and I may be biased. I've only really played different versions of the first one though (SNES, Arcade, GBA). I haven't really played FF2 and 3. But yeah, I'm a big fan of Final Fight.

As for Streets of Rage, I played the second one on PC a few years ago. I thought it was okay. It doesn't help that the fanbase overrates it. But anyways, I recently bought Streets of Rage 1 because I was in the mood for a beat 'em up and because it was only $1 and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I don't know what happened. I also ended up buying Streets of Rage 3 to play later on.

Streets of Rage for me, though I haven't played Final Fight 3 or those awful looking PS2 and Saturn games. The soundtracks, neon nighttime aesthetics, and the fact that character movement and combat feels a bit less stiff, are why SOR wins out.

Streets of Rage 2 eviscerates Final Fight in every possible way.

Final Fight although I only limit myself to 1, 2, 3.
That said, I'll play SoRII over the first final fight anyday but I prefer Final Fight 2 and 3 to SoR series overall.

It's almost unanimous.

Final Fight 1 beats Streets of Rage 1, imo, but Streets of Rage 2 is the best beat em-up ever made by a very considerable margin.

Final Fight is still one of my all time favourite arcade games so I'm gonna always go with that.

I enjoy both but I've always preferred Final Fight. Love all three games to bits.

Final Fight was impressive when it debuted in arcades. I couldn't wait to get it at home on console. It was my first SNES game! I would later get the Sega CD version too which has a godly soundtrack.

I always thought Streets of Rage was the knock-off series.

Decades later, Streets of Rage might still be my favorite franchise in gaming. Streets of Rage 2 by itself eviscerates every other beat-em-up I've played.

Guess the less than perfect SNES port of Final Fight doesn't help it out in this contest....they even had a 2nd chance at getting it right and still managed to cock it up!!!
