Holy shit its not dead!

Left 4 Dead - $19.99
Left 4 Dead 2 - $19.99
The Orange Box - $19.99
Portal: Still Alive - $14.99

The Backward Compatibility program has quickly become a hallmark feature of the Xbox family, and we love seeing people discover (or rediscover!) games they may have missed the first time around. Gamers have played over 1 billion hours of Xbox 360 and Original Xbox games on Xbox One – and we think our new release is only going to keep that momentum going.

Starting today, four new Xbox 360 titles will be available enhanced for Xbox One X: the historic collection of Half-Life 2: The Orange Box, Portal: Still Alive, Left 4 Dead, and Left 4 Dead 2. Whether players are revisiting these iconic titles or experiencing them for the first time, they'll see them with the stunning visuals only the Xbox One X can deliver.

SEE THE FULL LIST OF XBOX ONE BACKWARD COMPATIBILITY TITLES

Xbox 360 games enhanced for Xbox One X run at a higher resolution and 9X the original pixel count. The power of Xbox One X enables the Xbox 360 emulator to showcase the very best version possible with the existing assets—all without touching the game code. Today's additions join the 17 previously released enhanced Xbox 360 titles like Red Dead Redemption and Skate 3 for a total of 21 Xbox One X Enhanced Xbox 360 games.

Compatibility is important to Xbox, to developers and their games, and our community. Preserving gaming classics is part of the Backward Compatibility DNA, which is why Xbox One is the only console designed to play the best games of the past, present and future. We'll continue to deliver on our vision of compatibility and grow our current Backward Compatible library, which includes more than 500 Xbox 360 games, 21 Xbox One X Enhanced Xbox 360 titles, and 32 Original Xbox games, delivering quality, legacy gaming content to Xbox One gamers around the world.

Considering these games run on a highly scalable engine, these enhancements shouldn't have been too hard to make. Maybe it was essentially an .ini tweak.

Kind of weird games to focus on enhancing, but all the merrier I guess!

Fuck me!!!!!!! Left 4 Dead is playable again!!!! On my 4k telly it looked like dogshit, but now it should be enough to satisfy the graphics whore inside me.

Man, I swear this gen has turned me into a right dick with resolutions and frame rates.

Holy shit? It really is "still alive". I'm in shock.
But it seems more like a initiative from Valve as from Microsoft.

Don't know if I will be able to ever play Orange Box tho. The German version is heavenly censored and unplayable for me and buying 360 games digitally from another country is almost impossible. Damn. :/ Same with L4D1 and 2 by the way, also censored.

Holy shit. Like, honestly, that's fantastic. And this is on top of Portal 2 already being enhanced.

On PC, I've recently run into issues with stability when I try to play several of the old Valve games at 4K, so this is even cooler as an oddball workaround.

It's as much about testing after they've made the changes. And previously, they've gone in to alter settings based on object/render class to get higher quality LoD and shaders further out (which is also why some games are better candidates than others, based on how they were coded originally). They seem to treat these as seriously as a proper release.

This is great news! Really excited to see how the orange box looks. I wasn't able to try out the portal 2 X enhancements since I sold my original copy years ago.

Yes! Guess they kinda felt to say something because of all the negative stuff and drought of the past 6 months. Awesome to hear!

Ooh good selection!

Ah what specifically? The ones I tried recently generally seemed to be fine, though TF2 stutters a bit for me...plus all of them don't scale UIs or menus effectively so they end up being tiny at 4k and microscopic at 8k downsampled D:

Sweet. Looks like GameStop already jacked up the prices though. Ugh

For whatever reason, the various Half-Life 2 distributions run into an issue where the screen freezes, but ambient audio continues. If I started the main HL2 campaign, I'd get about as far as Lamar screwing up the test transport, and it would snag there. I've seen enough people with a similar problem but no consistent solution between different hardware/software environments that I'm pretty sure it's nothign about my setup.

The UI stuff was weeeird to get used to though, even when it functioned.

Nice. Not really interested in any of these games but it's good more games are getting the 4K treatment.

You can just buy it normally, switch your console region to for example US and download the uncensored version :P
