https://www.gamesindustry.biz/artic...ees-to-speak-out-on-100-hour-week-controversy

The email saying we were allowed to discuss this was sent to the entire development staff; all studios, all roles, all levels of seniority. We were told there were no limits on what we could discuss with regards to conditions/hours. I really don't have anything to add to the Tweets in the original posts, other than to say that it's just been frustrating knowing that industry friends/students might be put off working for R* because of all this guff.

Always pay attention to the job title of someone saying they don't work excessive overtime. Different jobs will have different workloads, remember that.

Well surely is something else hear a company need to grant their permission to leak an opinion about them in the social media. Man this world.

Great to hear. And now some people will search for a reason not to believe them.

And this is why I waited to comment on the whole 100 hour rockstar thing.

People are way to quick to react without knowing the facts. I have a friend who works at Rockstar (UK) and he has also said he doesn't know a single person who works 100 hour weeks. Also if they do overtime it's paid.

One dev says that they do crunch and that they wished it would be better. Still no 100 hours.

I want to believe that things have changed in recent years. It was a mess in 2008 - 2010 at San Diego.

I find it hard to believe that anyone who wants to stay employed would feel free to say anything too negative regardless of this "permission". I don't really know what the solution is though, its always going to be he said/she said.

A better long term solution for these issues, rather than just reacting to bad press, would be to support/recognise unionisation efforts. I hope this is something Rockstar consider.

A note that we don't know who or what Rockstar has allowed which of their employees or former employees to say.

We have one employee saying "Rockstar has granted permission for us to speak frankly about this issue on social media". We don't know who "us" includes.

I find it hard to believe that anyone who wants to stay employed would feel free to say anything too negative regardless of this "permission".
Also this.

And Team Bondi also said they were ace until shit hit the fan. Overtime shouldn't even be something you go to social media to defend, it just shouldn't be a thing with a well-managed studio like Rockstar unless a serious issue is found close to release and it's all hands on deck to fix it. It is the whole point of project managers and using systems like SCRUM to ensure you meet deadlines or sprint goals.

Oh, I wonder how people who weren't interested in RDR2 in the first place would make a big deal out of them "boycotting" the game now.

Things to take note of:

Job titles / departments
Salaried vs Contracted or Hourly Rate employees
Geographical Location

I'd imagine that results are going to inconsistent across all of these variables

Please talk openly about how we totally don't force you to work illegal amounts of overtime. We super duper promise we won't punish you like how we punished all those people who didn't do overtime.

This feels like if resetera mods made a thread called "talk about your piracy". I would assume people being impacted the most by crunch are not going to speak up about it. Also some seniors "volunteering" to work excess hours isn't okay.

Some people here really don't want to feel any kind of bad in regards to their RDR2 purchase.

Sounds like about what I expected. Typical crunch if you click through that one guys timeline is 45-50 hour weeks. That's my typical non-crunch work week. Kind of unbelievable how people blow this particular scenario out of proportion. There are many, many professions where 45-50 hours is the norm, and 60 hours is typical during "busy season".

While this is great, it ultimately shouldn't change the narrative: devs need to unionize.

Oh, I wonder how people will abandon all critical thinking skills if it means they can go back to defending their precious video games.

Oh, wait, I guess I don't.

I think the biggest issue is that there is still this mindset that if you don't work yourself to death you're just not passionated enough and that's just not healthy. It's reasonable to expect some crunch when close to a deadline but companies should work harder at making sure employees dont feel peer pressured into doing overtime. I'd rather RDR 2 be delayed another year if it meant the devs are well treated.

The thing these companies need to realise is, their audiance doesnt consist mostly of 12 to 16 year olds anymore.

Trying to convince people of how good of an employer you are on social media is meaningless, and you arent going to fool anyone. (Well most people)

If you want to generate some good will, start making some real change by supporting the unionisation of your employees

As someone who used to work in the gaming industry - can tell you that *no one* sticks to the hours written in their contract. I've done my fair share of 80h+/week, and I was just a PR Manager. Of course, no one forced me but:
  • We were under-staffed
  • We had tons of games
  • We had tons of events
  • You want to perform to get a bonus and climb the ladder, since you don't want to suck **** to reach your goals.
