https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/captain-marvels-origin-story-has-changed-movie-1153100

The fourth issue of the Life of Captain Marvelseries, by Margaret Stohl, Carlos Pacheco and Erica D'Urso, reveals that Carol Danvers did not actually gain superpowers through exposure to an alien device known as the Psyche-Magnetron in an accident related to Marvel's first, male, Captain Marvel as shown in 1977's Ms. Marvel No. 2 — an origin story that had gone unchallenged for the past 40 years to this point.

Instead, the comic established that Carol's mother is, in fact, a member of the alien race the Kree, making Carol a Kree-human hybrid from birth as opposed to the result of an accident related to a male hero. The Psyche-Magnetron, instead of altering Carol's DNA, "activated" Carol's inherent superpowers, her mother explains, making them in her words, "not borrowed. Not a gift. Not an accident" — a purposeful shift that befits the company's repositioning of the character as a model of female empowerment.

The story also retcons Marie Danvers' name into "Mari-Ell," turning Carol Danvers into "Car-Ell" in the process; both names follow the pattern established by Marvel's original Captain Marvel, whose real name was Mar-Vell. In an amusing coincidence, it brings Captain Marvel closer to Superman's birth name of Kal-El just years after the CW show Supergirl changed Supergirl's secret identity to "Kara Danvers."

See this coming a mile away if old

I understand it gets frustrating when Marvel Comics changes lore based on the MCU but I think it makes sense in this case. Carol is a great character that is weighed down with an overly convoluted history.

"Car-Ell" is kind of hilarious though. And if the movie isn't similar to this, that's a bit strange.

Sure, it's not like her origin story was as iconic or beloved as Crime Alley or Great Power/Great Responsibility, so it's not a huge loss? I just think that Car-Ell is a little weird and close to Kal-El for my tastes, even though Mar-Vell has been a thing for a while.

I like 'Air Force Pilot who got blown up' better than 'alien' as an origin overall, though.

I mean the whole Psyche-Magnatron is kinda key to Kelly Sue Deconnicks's run. This just flattens it into another Peter Quill.

Not to mention the Kree name thing.

I get that Carol's history is... a mess. But this was not the way to go.

I like retcons. Comic book characters from Superman on down have had them. But do you know what I like best? A recon on a character that has a loud angry internet presence. It's like sweet nector.

Not sure this origin change is going to be the same as the movie. Marvel Studios may use the comics as a guide, but there is no way they let the comic get this info 5 months before the movie comes out.

I love the MCU and all but the push by Marvel to try and get EVERYTHING synced up seems kinda short-sighted in my eyes.
Doesn't really bother me much in this case because Carol is meh, but in general I feel like they should just let their various properties breath a bit.

Their reluctance to allow mutants/x-men in anything game related for so damn long is still the most annoying aspect of that.
Always felt like the perfect example of cutting off your nose to spite your face.

I mean "Car-Ell"? Really?

You get a chance to rewrite the origin of what could one day be Marvel's biggest female superhero and you turn her name into a dumb joke referencing one of Superman's side characters?

For the backstory to be such a lateral move in blandness is truly a feat befitting of Carol herself, given that the first was a schlock sidekick origin from the 70s and the second the backbone of the protagonist of a multi million dollar blockbuster film that is expected to headline the next decade or so of multi million dollar blockbuster films

Like, her mother was a kree? For real

It seems fine to me. I know some people just hate the comic book character but I feel like the response to this origin change is a little melodramatic. Like some just want to hate everything about the movie because her comic version sucks.

Not a big deal at all. No one actually cares about this except comic nerds. Anyone who says it makes her less interesting is asking to be laughed at considering no one has even watched this movie.

Nothing says empowerment like ret-conning your character into the chosen one. I get their concerns with Mar-Vell but is this really all they could come up with?

Oh so now Carol is half alien?

Eh, I actually kinda preferred the idea that she was just a normal human the Kree kidnapped for whatever talents she showed, then wiped her memory so she wouldn't remember Earth. That way she would've been super pissed that her home was taken from her, kicked the crap out of the Kree and made it very clear that if they ever came to Earth again she'd punch the Kree homeworld so hard it'd explode (since she's apparently a planetbuster according to Brie Larson, the Kree would know she isn't bluffing).

The whole half alien bridge between species thing is super cliché now and we already have Quill for that. Maybe the movie won't necessarily be the same?

I just dont get it. They keep trying to fix her even 6 years into her stint as Captain Marvel. In the last 6 years, Marvel could have just created a new female Captain Marvel and just thrown away all this baggage. I don't understand this obsession with making her the poster girl for Marvel's female superheroes. Like she just fails upwards.

So this is gonna be her origin in the movie, right? Would be pretty weird if it weren't.

The comic writers have absolutely zero idea of what the movies are doing ahead of time, the headline is mostly clickbait.

Whatever is being done in this miniseries is all set up for whatever Kelly Thompson plans to do in her run, that's all.

Lol, no

I don't get it either. I don't understand why Marvel is so focused on rehabilitating Carol as a character, in particular. They could easily just make a new Captain Marvel and it would be far less awkward for them.

At this point it's just an assumption this is the direction they go with for the movie? Or do we know this is how it is there?

I dunno. It is what it is. Chief beef with Carol is her never having a strongly defined character and identity. Lots of traits borrowed from other characters. Getting dramatic reinventions over the years. This is inline with all of that.

Movie always felt like it's a great opportunity to define who she is in popular culture. Hopefully that's still the case.

Yeah, I think the comics division is just acting preemptively to whatever happens in the film by Marvel Studios, without actually knowing the details ( Or well, anything :p )

That's fine. Making her genetically half-Kree from the start is simpler than the stupid fuckin' psyche-magnetron nonsense that never stood the test of time.

There are so many better marvel woman, Carol is awful.

Throw her into a dumpster and push Songbird.

She is literally the easiest character to push, she looks cool, has a cool powers, has a defined personality, and a simple backstory.

The MCU connection is just people speculating. We don't know what the movie is doing.

Sounds like they'd rather Captain Marvel not be a hero as a result of a man(alien man). But instead something she inherited from her mother.

Personally this works for me, I'm not invested in Captain Marvel at all. Looking forward to the movie version. Also gives me a reason to tell my daughter she got her awesome powers from her mom after she watches it.

Sensible - if uninspired - origin change. The names are obviously terrible, but I still couldn't be more psyched to see Carol's movie. I'm expecting them to push her military background too. I always loved the story in which she's tortured, has her nails ripped out, and doesn't give a fuck.

Carol is more popular than Songbird, who even a number of comic fans know nothing about and the movie will further increase the gap.
