FIrst off, this is not a "I'm so hyped for Anthem thread!" I don't think Bioware and EA deserve the benefit of the doubt after Andromeda and Battlefront 2, and I'll patiently wait for the "beta" and reviews to make my decision on the game.

But after playing a lot of Destiny 2: Forsaken this fall and listening to the most recent Giant Bombcast talk about Blackout in Black Ops 4 (and how you unlock new operators for it), I've begun feeling an immense sense of relief that Anthem will just focus on the PvE experience. Don't get me wrong - I can hold my own in PvP in most games (I'm pretty decent at Gambit in Forsaken, at least good enough to progress in exotic quests without issue), but it's never my preferred activity.

For years, I've enjoyed Destiny because it's allowed me to play with some friends who may be more PvP focused as we both seek out new weapons and upgrades to our characters. But during that same time, it's been painfully obvious to see whenever Bungie has had to design around the fact that a gun can be used in both PvE and PvP. It ties their hands from doing truly cool stuff with weapons and abilities in PvE - remember the Vex Mythoclast? I have no idea if Bioware has been watching and learning from that situation, but I would hope they have and are ready to deliver some extremely fun weapons and abilities for us to try out with friends.

There's also a more selfish reason, and that's the fact that I just don't have the time to develop the knowledge and skills to be good at every multiplayer game anymore. I can focus on one, maybe two, but beyond that it's just not going to happen. With a game that will hopefully be story/PvE focused, I can just concentrate on playing progression content with friends, and scratching our competitive itch somewhere else that we're already engaging with.

All of this doesn't even mention the fact that we'll avoid the huge parade of complaints about weapon balance, nerfs, spawn locations, maps, and matchmaking issues that seem to follow every popular multiplayer title these days. I still don't know if this game will be any good, but I'm at least more interested in it than I might be otherwise.

Nope it's a negative. There's a reason why the Divison added actual PvP in later updates and I'm expecting Anthem to do the same. For these types of games you need as many activities to keep the player base active.

PvP would be a nice addition I guess.

You just have to make separate gear for PvP to make it really work (not like in Destiny for example, it's a total mess unless you just want to play casually from time to time).

I usually have zero interest for competitive multiplayer in this kind of games, so it's not a negative for me. It's not a positive either, because I know people enjoy games that way and it sucks for them.

I would like to see a game try that just to see how it works out and how the player base responds. I think Bungie would never do it now because it would be trading a known quantity for an unknown.

Its a slight negative to me but if Destiny is anything to go by its better without it to some degree. Competing in the crucible in that game is impossible mostly without having the best guns. Even though it balances damage it doesn't balance the abilities or recoil etc so new players don't stands a chance against people who have grinded for the best crucible weapon variants. it should just balance the whole thing so every gun is the same. Imbalance in pvp is the worst.

Considering I spent god knows how many hours in ME3 MP and now basically get a whole game around it I'm fine with the lack of PvP.

In Destiny I really like jumping into the crucible from time to time for a change of pace.

Its a negative imo. even if people don't care for PvP, i don't see how it not having it could be spun as a good thing considering there are a lot of people that do care about PvP.

Take Destiny for example, the PvP side of things tends to hold the game together and helps it retain a relatively healthy user base in the periods where most of the PvE content has been exhausted and people are waiting for a new expansion. Some would argue that balancing weapons/abilities with PvP in mind has hurt Destiny at times, but Anthem could have sidestepped that by having separate balancing for PvE and PvP.

Its the same for The Division too. In fact, I think I spent more time in the Dark Zone than I did playing or rather replaying the PvE content. I fully understand that a lot of players don't enjoy PvP, but the communities built around PvP for both Destiny and The Division are greatly responsible for the long term popularity of both titles, with the youtube and twitch scenes, as well as reddit.

I have doubts about the amount of content in Anthem, and how it will be supported post launch. These games tend to rely on people replaying its PvE content non-stop and PvP could have helped the game in this regard by giving players a break from that routine.

Considering I play a LOT of Warframe, it's a positive, PvE is just way more engaging to me.

I didn't finish listening to the Bombcast, but from what I know the operators in Blackout are just skins.

Honestly I think it's good just look at Warframe tbh...

But I'm not really sure about Anthem, matter of fact I'm not picking it up at release.. I'd rather pick up both Days Gone and Metro at this point.

But I'll keep monitoring the game and see how content will be aded to it... It is a Bioware game after all so I'm not really up to be disappointed yet again after Andromeda.

I feel like you have to have a lot of compelling content to make up for a lack of pvp. For me personally pvp is something that gives me a big reason to continually go back to a game, I hope Anthem is able to fill the gap with meaningful content.

Big negative. The beauty of end game is kicking people's ass with the gear you put the work in to get.

My bet is the PVP never felt good for the game do they deaded it early.

Personally I am OK with no PVP at launch but I also hope that down the line they add some competitive modes, just for variation sake. Come up with a sports game that teams can play, or a CTF mode using the mobility etc.

Positive. I'd rather them not have to deal with cheaters and exploits... Weopon balancing. I seriously don't want the PvP ruining weapons cause nothing is ever good enough.

People keep saying content won't be there workout pvp which is terrible. You think the time spent making pvp just goes into the void? Nah...that same time is being used making more pve content.

100% positive for me, it's exactly the type of experience I've been waiting for. I just hope the game in general lives up to the hype.

Oh didn't know that it did not have PvP. I prefer it this way. Would not have played it anyway. More time/money to spend developing the PvE.

I was about to say this (as an avid Division player).

Although, if there is enough PVE content then people won't feel the overwhelming need for PvP modes to be introduced later.

For me it's a negative even though I don't care that much about PvP. There will be content drought and PvP could be used to keep the community engaged during those periods.

That being said, I don't know how the game will be structured or how the progression will work, so my feelings could change in the final game.

Warframe actually has a separately balanced pvp thing. Not that many people even use it at all.

It's a positive for me, but I still wish they had more avenues for multiplayer beyond just squads of 4.

Even the biggest games have a finite budget, schedule, and developer-count. Obviously who knows how the PVE will turn out, but presuming they've stuck the landing there, I'd vastly prefer they focused their investments into making this bigger, better, and more compelling, than designing some ham-fisted auxiliary mode for player retention's sake.

Didn't know it doesn't have PvP.

It wasn't a day one buy or anything but it's definitely a pass now unless they add it in the future.

Big time positive if they can pull it off. The design philosophy for destiny left armor, weapons and skills in D2 extremely homogenous. I imagine in large part due to PvP.

That's a very well written post OP.

I dunno I can't say tbh. Looking at gameplay, I'm having a hard time imagining a fun pvp mode in the game just seeing how the suits (or whatever they're called) play as. Maybe if the game featured some good shooting mechanics and perhaps some out of box thinking design wise, I wouldn't be against it.

Definitely a negative. Was hyped for this game until they said there wouldn't be any PvP, so now I wont be getting it.

I certainly wouldn't mind if it was in there, it would be super fun to fly around and kill people. Plus, pvp is an easy way to give your game legs. With only pve, they'll need to be really smart about supplying sufficient repeatable content

I honestly don't care. The game looks so bland and uninspired conceptually that while I respect them for not putting competitive multiplayer in just because they think it "needs to have it", I also don't really feel like the absence of PvP is going to add to the game either.

Huge positive for me. PvP is my least favourite part in every game I play, I much prefer solo and cooperative play.

Huge positive here. None of the balance issues that Destiny has experienced at times. Will make for more interesting and unique (read OP) gear hopefully.
