This is a reminder for anyone who wasn't aware or forgot.

Valkyria-Chronicles-1.jpg

Price: $19.99
DLC: All previously released DLC is included
Can I get it cheaper?: If you own Valkyria Chronicles 4 on Switch, you get 25% off. So $14.99.
EDIT: Apparently this only counts if you bought VC4 digitally. Sorry VC4 physical owners.
Can I get a physical copy?: No. It's digital only.
Can I get a trailer?: The Youtube Apocalypse appears to be over, so sure:

If I forgot to put something, let me know.

Huge fan of Valkyria chronicles and loving 4, but they are releasing this way too soon.

I'd love to have 1 on the go, but between still making my way through 4 and all the other games coming out, I won't have any time to pick this up until spring and by then the price will probably be lower.

Unfortunately I think the sales won't be great due to the timing.

I just realized that the 720p cutscenes won't look so bad on the Switch in handheld mode. So you can have a less distracted experience.

Just started with this. Decided to let VC4 wait to get used to the original again and I must say that is just as good as I remember. Beautiful artstyle that has aged really nicely, interesting gameplay and solid characters.

I just wish that the discount applied to owners of the physical version of VC4.

So the gameplay for this looks solid, but I sort of hate the story presentation. Does the narrative develop and gain some depth or is it all pretty surface-level anime-style storytelling?

I was waiting until I got back from my travels to get physical version of VC4, but seeing as this just released as digital only I might pick it up and play it first.

Just wondering if it's too much VC if played back to back.

My first quadruple dip as far as I remember, with 2 physical editions out of those 4.

I'll miss the rebalancing mods and 4k60fps, but at least I can play anywhere.

I played this on PS3 up to the infamous difficulty spike and then stopped.

Might pick it up and try again. Then just pick up VC4 in a year when it's $20.

Gonna play this for the first time, then follow it up later with VC4.

Any tips for new players from the multiple dippers?

What's up with the rippling effect on the dialog faces? Looks like an unfiltered dynamic resolution or something. Seems like a so-so port.

I was actually thinking I'd grab this but then read about the recon cheat and my interest faded. Sounds like that was fixed in VC4 so I'll pick it up some day

Be sure to always deploy troops with a star next to their name, it gives you an extra turn. Protect them too, because if they fall in battle you lose that turn bonus. Other than that just enjoy the game and play with who you want, how you want.

With the VC4 discount and currency perks, it's 10 euro for me. Such a steal for a portable version of one of my favourite games ever.

Is Japanese language included as an option? I mean I'm buying it either way, but just wondering.

Any word on how this runs? I️ have it on pc but would consider triple dipping

It does have slowdowns when there are too many alpha effects. Example: the first mission where you can use the tank. Breaking the wall and exploding the imperial tank made the frame rate drop, but it went back to normal after it happened.

Uh.
-You can save mid-battle. When you're on the map I believe it's options>system>save/load
-When running around R2/L2 is a lean ability to peak around corners, and a shoulder-swap while aiming. The game never tells you this.
-Do not leave your tank's radiator exposed, guaranteed some enemy tank or lancer will one-shot you from across the map.
-Engineers can repair your tank, fix sandbags and sniper towers, clear mines, replenish your ammo, and are better healers then other classes. Always keep one around.
-The upgrade trees have more then four tiers, remember to scroll down.
-You'll might hear people talking about just rushing a scout to the objective and winning in one turn. Don't. Early on, without the upgraded potentials and orders you'll just loose scouts.
-Chapter seven is a bastard. Don't get discouraged.

Interested in seeing how this game runs. Considering that it's a pretty basic port of a PS3 game, I would expect a minimum of 1080p/30FPS docked and 720p/30FPS handheld; but would be pleased if they managed to retain the 60FPS from the PC/PS4 versions.

(Not that 60FPS would make a massive difference, considering that it's a turn based game, but would still be nice.)

I will definitely get this later on Switch, I started it many years ago on PS3 but never finished it. VC4 was great once I had worked myself into the mechanics, it took a while though. Still sad VC1 doesn't hit Xbox, too.

It is 30fps on Switch.

It is not running in 720p. It's tough to say what it is running at but there's a distinct sub-native blurriness to the gameplay, and in dialog scenes it's scaled without filtering, which looks awful.

It's a serviceable port but seems to be the weakest version.

Just furthering the OP's point:

If you haven't played a Valkyria Chronicles game before this is a great place to start. It's a great strategy game with unique mechanics and a great story with a heartfelt cast of characters.

Don't hesitate, the militia needs you!

Bought it immediately even though I'm in an Odyssey induced break in the middle of VC4 and probably won't get to play this for a few weeks or even months. VC1 is one of my all time favorite games so I had to support it.

Are 2 and 3 coming to Switch also? Tempted to pick this up and eventually play 4 but I don't want to skip two games.

Two is the only sequel and forgoes a lot of the great story and character possibilities for high schoolers in a military academy. Three was never brought over to the west and the unofficial patch released for it is unpolished.

Don't worry about it and just go from VC1 to VC4 - you won't be missing too much.

Basically the exact same slowdowns as the PS3 version - Though I should note it's not alpha effects tanking the FPS. VC1 (and VC4) make extensive use of Nvidia PhysX in various subtle ways that were ahead of their time - And in many ways are still ahead of the rest of the industry since many games still don't use PhysX whatsoever, and the ones that do just use it for some throwaway particle-effects that only show up on High Settings anyway.

Usually the slowdowns on PS3 (and now Switch) were when these destruction things happened and had more things simulating physics at once than they tuned their 30FPS target around.

I'd like to think it's pretty solidly told and heartfelt - but if you consider all anime to have surface level stories then I don't know how you'll enjoy it.

I love this game and I'm loving 4 on Switch, but some of the performance is annoying. Especially the animations with grenadiers. Fortunately, 1 doesn't have that class.

Will definitely pick this up since my PC copy seems to have some crazy bug that wouldn't let me get past a section because there was a tank that constantly respawns. I even did a fresh install. Gave up on it.
