Pixar with the feels. Don't think there was a dry eye in the entire movie theater. Def. wanna watch it again in Spanish.

What time can I see this when no kids will be at the theatre, lol? I like to watch movies in peace. :P

Either 10:45PM tonight or 9:45AM tomorrow I suppose
I'd go at 9:45 but that's just because it's cheaper. At 10:45 you probably won't have many young children. I went at 12pm and it was full of couples with babies and toddlers. Thankfully they all behaved

I actually liked the Frozen featurette, had some solid jokes and the final musical number was really sweet. That said, it's incredibly obvious it wasn't meant for theatrical viewing and was always intended to be a television special. From the way it looks and was written and paced, it physically feels like something that would play on ABC or in between a couple of movies during Freeform's 25 Days of Christmas lol. I didn't mind it being in front of Coco but I think it would've been much more well received if they kept it on TV like it was supposed to be instead of forcing it in front of a feature

but man, this movie is the real deal. it's really one of the most beautiful and heartfelt movies I've ever seen, and definitely up there with Pixar's best. there were a few parts that we're predictable
I saw Hector being Miguel's real great-great-grandfather coming as soon as it was revealed that he used to play music, but I didn't anticipate him being murdered by Ernesto which was really interesting
but they pulled them off incredibly well. the last few scenes left me a goddamn mess, I haven't had a good cry at a film like that in awhile. there's so much love and care put into this entire thing, but especially during those final moments. just incredibly satisfying to see unfold

Because it was supposed to show on ABC

Edit: it was first announced to be showed on ABC this year in February 2016

Saw it earlier. Pretty good. Didn't leave me all that emotional though

And you couldn't get Selma Hayek to voice Frida? Come on now

It was really one of Pixar`s best. Go watch it guys. My Girlfriend was groaning and grouchy when the Frozen short overstayed it's welcome. She was in a teary mess when Coco ended.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills, I really liked the Frozen short. Sure, Olaf isn't the best I'll admit, but the jokes were on point and the songs were decent.

Oh and Coco was great too.

Just saw this tonight. It was ridiculously good. Their best film since Toy Story 3.

I was a little nervous about it in Act 1, thinking about where the major themes were going to overlap and fight with each other, that they were going to want to have their cake and eat it. But somehow they got away with it. Thinking back on the whole film, I think I am most impressed by their careful stage directing with some of its plot mechanics. The whole story could have easily fallen apart at any moment, if they pulled on the plot strings the wrong way or for too long. The pacing and the story beats were really well done.

The visual design of this film is gorgeous. I like how they put that little interview thing about the technical stuff at the beginning, and it still blew me away when they got there.

The movie was straight fire, Pixar at their absolute best when they're not hamstrung by sequels or bad corporate meddling. The interplay between following your dreams at the expense of your family was not really well done, in particular Hector's character arc. I'm still impressed by how endearing the character became over the course of the film when he could've been easily annoying or throwaway.

Also, Dante is perfect. Absolutely precious sausage.

The only negative thing I can say about the experience was that fucking Frozen short. Disney deserves to go to Hell for that shit.

Gonna echo the sentiments in here. This is Pixar in top form. Coco is gonna land pretty high among their films, I think. Lotta fun, lotta heart, makes you cry. It was fantastic.

Frozen short was fine. Part of me was mostly just annoyed to not get a Pixar short, and instead we got something that's just gonna make a tight 30 minute television Christmas special next year when commercials are put in. It was a little long, but most of the songs were cute. I was okay with it.

Damn this was good. Absolutely beautiful and heartfelt all the way through. My only minor complaint is I wished they would've let some of the moments linger a bit more in place of some of the gags, but it's a kid's movie so I understand. This is up there with Pixar's best and I really wanna rewatch it in Spanish since I've been learning.

I just closed my eyes. So I wasn't visually spoiled at least. I get why they're doing it; they want to help the audience appreciate the work the designers put into the film rather than just having it wash over them, but there has to be a way of doing it without spoiling some of the most impressive visual beats of the movie before you see the movie.
Well to be fair, the parts shown (the bridge and the cityscape) were in pretty much all the promotional material

I couldn't care less if you were going to watch the movie. I'm wondering why you would waste your time in this thread if you aren't interested in these types of movies.
The thread was titled 'why are people not seeing this movie' or 'why is there no hype for this movie' something like that. I gave my two cents, as a man with no children im not interested in going to a theater and spending my money to see this. Am I only allowed to post in topics where I agree with OP? Can I not post about things I dont care for?

That sounds like it would be a reason to see it, since you don't have to pay for a bunch of kids as well.

This is my favorite movie of the year. I have no cultural ties to this film, but the themes of loss of family hit me so hard. The last twenty minutes had me in shambles in the movie theater. I cannot recommend this film enough. I've see every Pixar film (bar Cars 3) and it is easily in my Top 5. It is phenomenal.

When all I wanted to see was the movie that short dragged on FOREVER and since I never saw frozen it doubly meant nothing to me.

The movie itself is one of my favorite animated films now and it got WAY darker than I thought it would.

I want to not watch 20 minutes of that shit so badly that I'm going to try to time my arrival so I have to watch the least amount of it.
You also have to plan for some 15-20 minutes of previews and then there is a short Coco behind the scenes segment before the movie actually starts so while I didn't time how long it actually was, it felt like 45 minutes before the movie actually started.

Did you watch it dubbed? If so, how was the dub? Do they also throw in spanish words into the dialogue? How did they handle the songs?

Considering what little I know of chinese culture they seem to also place a lot of emphasis on the importance of family and respect towards their elders/ancestors so I can picture the film connecting well with the audience. Or perhaps I'm talking out of my ass, lol.

Coco was fabulous. Great stuff.

Gorgeous, too. I was super impressed with some of the depth of field work they were pulling off.

My girlfriend checked her watch, we clocked Coco as starting 41 minutes after the showtime.

The Frozen short wasn't terrible, but definitely a bit of a slog. They packed too many songs in and the story, as it were, was stretched thin.

But hey, Olaf's Frozen Adventure was a lot less offensive than the trailers for Duck Duck Goose, Ferdinand, and Sherlock Gnomes that I had to sit through.

Thought it was alright. The story was okay, but pretty generic (pixar really should stop repeating themselves with setups and premises). Surprise villains should stop asap. The pacing was too freaking fast and the characters never shut up in this movie. There's probably no five-second stretch of silence anywhere in this movie, it's ridiculous and exhausting. The dog and the flying panther creature were stupid and added nothing, just like many other side characters. The world of the dead looked pretty great, but the movie never spent enough time in one location to appreciate it. I think Zootopia treated its city better. Didn't like the message of the movie either: don't really care about the whole family-is-important-don't-forget-the-dead shebang.
The songs were all great and cgi looked fantastic. Didn't like how the skeletons looked like though. The eyeballs and 'lips' looked stupid af.
It's an enjoyable movie, but it's a far cry from Pixar's best. I think they haven't made a truly great movie since Ratattouille, and at this point I don't believe they'll ever will.

Frozen short was sweet, though. The songs were great and it looked awesome. I'd rather watch 90 minutes of that.

Basically this for me and my girlfriend. We had 2 behind the scenes featurettes for Coco, 4-5 ads for The Last Jedi, then trailers for Sherlock Gnomes, Ferdinand, Peter Rabbit, Paddington 2, A Wrinkle in Time (which actually looked really cool!) and the Incredibles 2 teaser before the Frozen short. Literally all the trailers were terrible except for A Wrinkle in Time and the teaser for Incredibles 2. If anything, it pushed us to never go to a Cinemark again; our local Arclight theater is better, even if it's more expensive.

Coco itself was fantastic. Looked gorgeous with great aesthetics, an incredible amount of character, catchy music and really good pacing. Right up there with the best of Pixar for us!

Coco was amazing. The Frozen featurette soured my mood, but Coco was just beautiful to watch. Not the most original story beats - I saw the reveal immediately, but someone actually said it out loud in the theatre during the Ernesto party scene, which resulting in booing - but it was just put together with so much love and joy.

I lost my grandmother a few weeks ago, so the storyb hits home hard. Movies can move me very deeply, but very rarely do I ever cry. However, at the end of Coco I was all...

The dog was pretty lousy and very goofy looking (it's a cartoon, though), but it has an important role related to Aztec mythology. From wikipedia:
Xolotl gave this gift to Man with the instruction to guard it with his life and in exchange it would guide Man through the dangers of Mictlan, the world of Death, toward the Evening Star in the Heavens.

And we all know what happens in the movie.

It's a hit in China?!

I thought it would be shunned on it being so drenched in Mexican culture or are issitthey more fascinated by the lore than I gave them credit for?

I'm not surprised at all if it becomes a hit in China.

The theme of family is universal, but the Chinese specifically have a Day of the Dead analogue in the Qing Ming festival. It's when we visit, clean and respect the graves of our ancestors, preparing lavish feasts and inviting them to enjoy it. We also burn offerings that they might use in the afterlife unlike money, or increasingly paper iPhones and 4K TVs. Even the idea that the dead live on in the form when they passed on is rooted in Chinese culture.

There were quite a few nods to a number of legendary mexican celebrities. Off the top of my head I remember seeing El Santo, Jorge Negrete, Pedro Infante, Cantinflas and Frida Kahlo obviously. I'm sure there's plenty more that I either don't remember or went over my head.

Agh, I can't stop thinking about this movie, I love it so much. I come from a Mexican family, but I'm fairly whitewashed. Still, so many little things resonated with me, but I also learned a lot from it too. It's just such a damn beautiful and touching movie, I really want the world to see it.

No joke, I took my family to see it and we we're running late and it made me anxious. We got to the theater like 5 minutes late and had to take kids to the bathroom but made it in during the trailers. Then they wanted popcorn so I had to wait in a long ass line for it and fumble my way back to the theater with a tub and four water cups. Then I spilled one and had to run back for napkins to clean off my seat. At the end of all that, I manage to still catch like the last quarter of that stupid short. I checked my watch when the movie proper started and it was 2:38 (2:00 start time).

Just got back from my showing.

First off, the theater I went to was jam packed with people. No other seats to be found, and this hardly ever happens at my theater. No question about it, this is going to be a massive hit.

The Frozen short that started before the movie wasn't bad at all. I thought it was quite adorable actually with great visual gags and Olaf was really entertaining.

Now the movie itself, it was FANTASTIC. All the praise it's getting is no hyperbole. This is up there with Toy Story, Up, Wall-E, pretty much all of Pixar's timeless classics. The story was wonderful, the characters were filled with life (yes, that includes the dead ones).

And the visuals...

Oh
My
God

The city of the dead is easily one of the most magnificent visual creations I've ever seen. I don't want to think about the work they went through just to put up even a quarter of that city up on the screen. I'll just say, this movie proves why Pixar is as acclaimed as they are.

I also found this movie to be very relatable on a personal note. Like Imelda, my great-grandmother had a husband who abandoned her with two children (my grandmother and great uncle), and she basically said "Fuck no, this isn't going to bring me down one bit", and became a seamstress to make a living. She was a very strong woman who didn't let anything bring her down.

Of course the difference being that my great grandmother came from Italy and that she became a seamstress, not a shoemaker and that she immigrated to the U.S. with her two children.

The movie was wonderful and I can't wait to see it again. :)
