DC has been a near-consistent source of terrible decisions, poorly received media and a cinematic universe that's somehow getting more embarrassing by the day. As someone who has heroes like Batman and Superman engraved into my heart the same way Spider-Man, the Turtles and other classic heroes have, I take no pleasure at the continuing blunders by DC.

So that's why I wanted to earnestly ask what DC properties are actually doing good these days, across any media. Young Justice is getting a third season, the Batman TAS set looks like an amazing remaster, and whatever property Rocksteady will make their next big game about is also guaranteed to be a smash hit.

Injustice 2 also had the best DC-related story I've seen in a long while, which honestly felt like a do-over of Batman v. Superman. Unlike that miserable, terrible trainwreck of festering shit, Injustice's story managed to tug at my heart strings and create a compelling version of Superman at his lowest.

So give me some good DC stuff. And try not to be that one contrarian who will insist that Batman v Superman and Justice League were actually the best movies ever and MCU is overrated.

1# Giving Affleck, Cavill and hopefully Gadot the boot soon.

2# Getting James Gunn to do Suicide Squad.

Bendis is bringing back Young Justice. And Young Justice the cartoon got another season.

I'm still cautious about Young Justice.

I'd be truly shocked if that show came back without any caveats, including a smaller animation budget or an insistence to push certain movie-marketed characters more.

There has to be a catch.

Teen Titans GO!...to the Movies

I recently saw that movie and found it quite entertaining.

With the exception that there was this sense of meddling from higher-ups to not shit on their brand too much: they acknowledge the Martha scene and the GL movie, but still smugly act like the Supes, Bats and JL movies were highly-regarded hits.

You can't take the piss out of yourself while also patting yourself on the back.

"They've made several Superman movies, and many more to come...."

Yeah I don't believe that anymore.

I'm a few months behind but Christopher Priest's Deathstroke run is one of the best superhero comics in recent years. It's on the level of his late 90s / early 00s Black Panther run for my money.
Wonder Woman also had one of the best runs in the character's history not too long ago (issues 1 through 25) and G. Willow Wilson is about to take over.

And we're about to get Grant Morrison's take on Green Lantern.
The Aquaman book is brilliant and looks gorgeous. And they've been doing great stuff with Mera for the last couple of years. I'm really looking forward to that upcoming graphic novel.

Overall, they still publish way too many good comics for me to be able to keep up, so there's that. I'll get to Bendis' Superman issue 2 one day, I swear.

Don't watch them but aren't their TVs shows supposed to be pretty good?
More to do with Fox and CW and less with DC studios themselves, the TV shows are all terribly written stretched out stories with a shoestring's budget for costumes, but people give them a pass for being TV Shows.

Get rid of gadot soon?

The sequel to her movie that made 800+ million is shooting right now, what sorta logic would would it make to get rid of her?
They're not going to recast Cavil and Affleck, the actors that literally play the defining comic book faces of DC comics, while keeping the rest on the payroll. Whole thing is likely getting a reboot. A Wonder Woman movie with better talent than Gadot could make a bank as much as the original did/sequel would do, if not more.

I also heard that Superman now has a wife and kid in his comic, and it's not going to get retconned like literally every other comic featuring a superhero with a family?

Not holding my breath on that one though, considering the whole Batman/Catwoman debacle.

If DC's trying to fill out a service with nothing but DC exclusive stuff, they really can't afford to go less than Cartoon Network quality; most of the catalog is still a bunch of reruns of a bunch of old shit. CW shows aside, they have, like what, six shows? You really can't build a streaming service off of six brand new shows these days. So anything that would entice people to watch early on makes sense, and cheapening out on YJ's budget wouldn't keep people like me on board for the service.

Oh wow, you didn't know?
I you want some good DC shit, read everything involving Jon Kent (the kid). Best thing to happen to the Superman books since... I don't know, probably the Alan Moore stories from the 80s.

The last preview video of YJ looked pretty rough, so that's got me worried.

And you're giving DC/WB too much credit to not fuck up, considering their track record.

I don't remember them showing off much beyond a bunch of early animation, and quick snippets at that. It looking rough would only worry me if they showed some stuff right now and it looked rough.

And I'm just trying to give WB the benefit of the doubt; they'd be entirely idiotic to try to make a niche streaming network and cheap out on budgets for their shows when they don't have much in the way of brand new content to begin with.

It's just the 'old' Supes that came back. The Rebirth Superman run from Tomasi/Gleason is pretty great and you should read it. There are two books you should read that lead up to the start (Lois & Clark and The Final Days of Superman), then optionally Rebirth #1 and then just read Superman Rebirth. The Superman book is more focused on the family, while Action Comics deals more with Metropolis/Lex. Action is a bit more shaky in quality but has its moments and the two series are a good tag team read.

That's great that you enjoyed Superman in Injustice 2. Now do yourself a favor and read a proper Superman story like American Alien.

They signed off three Joker movies with at least two different Joker actors and no new Batman in sight.

I struggle to give them even a sliver of a benefit of the doubt.

DC doesn't retcon familial changes for its major characters (unless it removes the characters entirely from continuity, looking at you Wally). Batman still has all of his adopted kids and his bio son. Barry still has Iris and Bart, etc. Those become a part of the status quo. Sometimes they disappear under a writer, but they're now in the snap back. It's not 'DC gave Superman a son' at this point. It's 'Superman has a son.'

Based on posts, Arrow went to shit and never came back.

Dunno about Flash, and Supergirl looks too campy for me.

Arrow made a massive recovery in Season 5. Six wasn't as solid but was still good.

Campy is good when done correctly. Everything doesn't have to be grimdark all the time. I think The Flash lost sight of that and became took itself way more seriously than it needed to.

I used to adore DC properties but I don't know - somewhere in the early 2000s they lost me and I haven't been able to fall in love again. I like the characters when I see them and think about what they stand/stood for but I couldn't tell you the last time I read something that made me happy that I was doing so.

Sooo good that one. Max Landis may be an asshole and I don't know what else, but that is one terrific Superman story.

Also, while still on comics: Darkseid War. I try to avoid event comics but that one's legit good. Trinity War => Forever Evil => Darkseid War is a lot of fun.

Their comics are good. Arguably better than Marvel's current output. There have been some shit decisions in recent months (like what they're doing with Nightwing) but generally Rebirth was for the better.

Superman's family isn't going anywhere since they've been very well received. Some of the best Superman stories in years have been pumped out recently.

A lot of new DC comic projects like the Sandman Universe look promising as well.

As far as games go, Rocksteady is working on something new I imagine and Injustice 2 was fun. The animated DC movies have generally been of OK to great quality. Their TV stuff seems to be doing quite well - not all of it is for me (Gotham) but you can't deny that there are HUGE numbers of people who tune in to Arrow, Flash, Black Lightning, Krypton, etc.

I would say that DC actually has a more well-rounded portfolio than Marvel does aside from the movie department, which is unfortunately what mainstream audiences pay the most attention to and seems to be the logic behind this thread.

Not sure if its been mentioned yet, but theres a Batman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover by James Tynion thats supposed to actually be really good lol.

Batman: Bad Blood was something I watched recently that I enjoyed.

But it also reminded me of two things that irk me as far as the Bat Family concept goes:

1. Why are there like five Robins, two Bat Ladies and an Iron-Bat? How can there possibly be any crime left in Gotham with that many Bat folks running around at the same time? If I were Penguin or Two-Face, I would be too afraid to leave my elaborate villain-themed hotel with that much heat out there.

2. The existence of Bat Woman feels like undermining Bat Girl. Didn't the latter appear first? If not, she is the most recognizable, but introducing a Bat Woman to the mix stirs up thoughts like "Well obviously she's the superior one because she's Bat WOMAN, just like how a Bat Boy would be inferior to the Bat MAN."

Which would then lead to several angry forum posts about how Robin is technically the Bat Boy and that all Bat folks are inferior to Batman anyway, etc
