The game looks fantastic, but personally I feel like the marketing has been a little...muted? Certainly it doesn't feel like it received the marketing blitz that, say, Spider-Man received leading up to its release. A GTA game will sell on name alone, but does the Red Dead brand have that sort of recognition with the average consumer? Redemption 1 came out 8 years ago, so the series hasn't exactly been in the public consciousness in a while.

Just to be clear- I don't think the game will flop. Far from it. However people talk about it like it's guaranteed to be a sales juggernaut and I'm not sure where the confidence is coming from. Does the average joe care that much about the Rockstar pedigree?

Same reason we assumed BioShock Infinite would have massive sales ... oh, wait.

I have a feeling that the game's word of mouth is going to be incredible. That there's a reason that they've been even more secretive than usual.

It's made by the most famous devs on earth and it'll have a bigger marketing budget than most AAA games have as a complete budget.

3 reasons.

1 - Its Rockstar.

2 - Its a direct sequel to a universal critical and commercial success.

3 - ITS ROCKSTAR

Yes. The average joe care about R* more than any other video game company probably combined.

Yes. RDR 1 is absolutely known for being a fantastic game even this many years on. Also anything Rockstar is attached to has incredible hype due to their record. I think it will do amazing at launch and then see another huge boost when the online stuff comes out because it will probably be really cool.

Well GTA V had crazy sales and consumer fidelity will do the rest.
Plus it'll be an amazing game with a huge marketting campaign, and with RDR Online, continued sales is assured.

Oh, I don't know. Could it be because it's a Rockstar game, and a sequel/prequel to one of their most beloved games of all time? Or, is it because GTA5 is one of the most succesful games ever created, and people will jump on anything R* puts out next?

Like, when was the last time a R* wasn't successful?

Other than the 16M views the reveal trailer on YT has?

I personally don't understand the hype. I always got the impression Red Dead Revolver was average at best, and Redemption was basically just GTA in the wild wild west (which has no appeal to me).

I will say the marketing hasn't been as strong as GTA V's campaign was, but, that was such a goddamn good marketing campaign that it would be very challenging to top.

This thread has me ded lol.

This isn't SMT here. When it comes to the masses their are 3 constants for video games. 1. Sports games will always sell. 2. CoD will sell. 3. Rockstar AAA will sell.

Yeah. They're the people who make some of the best-selling games in the world. It moves the needle significantly. The Rockstar and RDR brands are strong in non-enthusiast circles.

For those who follow games, it's being covered in every possible angle. And for people who only barely care about games? TV commercials, in-store advertising, and the like make an impact.

If RDR 2 online has some battle royal stuff ....

I think you can expect that every kid in town is gonna want it even more.

The rest of gamers remember the first game.

And rockstar quality and budget behind it.

A game like this doesn't really need a massive marketing campaign.

The game will sale just because it is Rockstar. Also, the word of mouth advertising of this game has got to be huge I imagine. I actually really like how Rockstar handles itself in terms of keeping things tight lipped and under wraps and just letting the game do the talking.

It will sale, no doubt about it.

Huge follow up to a high-selling game, first game from Rockstar since the most profitable piece of media of all time, massively expensive which correlates to sales way more often than not, and presumably a big marketing push from both Sony and Take-Two.

Aside from that, you're right, there's no reason to assume any game will sell well other than all the reasons to assume it will.

Revolver is forgettable. Redemption is not. They're different games.

Edit: Misread.

There are like a dozen fucking threads on the front page of this website about this one game. That's why.
