I was listening to a Kinda Funny podcast today and low behold, Fran Mirabella is on there announcing he has left IGN.

Destiny players will most likely know him from Fire Team Chat, a dedicated Destiny podcast that airs on Fridays.

He is striking out on his own.

Wear some tower casuals in his honor.

Edit: Kinda Funny episode he is on discussing leaving IGN

It feels like damn near every name I know at ign has left. The only "old guard" people I know anymore are peer and damon.

No idea he was still there. I used to chat with him on IRC back before IGN when he had Dolphin Cove going on.

Guess he's confident he can make it as a freelance video editor/producer. Probably won't have any trouble with all the connections he's made at IGN after 18 years. I wish him luck!

I have great memories of watching/reading Fran and Matt on IGN. Wishing him the best in his new ventures.

I remember meeting Fran and Matt at E3 in 2001 - always the nicest guy, would answer damn near any email you'd send to the channel's he was working on.

I wasn't very familiar with him since he wasn't on camera frequently, and I never watched Fireteam, but it's kind of surprising considering he's been there for nearly two decades. Other than Peer (co-founder) and I guess Daemon, is there anyone else still there that has been there for a long time?

Yeah he and Matt were a great team back in the GameCube days. I was bummed when he left the Nintendo channel, and didn't realize he was still there so many years later. Best of luck to him.

Anyone remember checking cube.ign.com Everyday and FranGoat and Matt.

Geeze I was so young

Shit, I remember checking N64.com every day, and then getting used to going to IGN64.com

I also remember thinking it was crazy when Fran was tapped to go work for the big dogs. He was a regular poster on I think Nintendorks?

Damn. I've known that name damn near half my life. Back when I was ripping and running on those IGN boards.

It blows my mind that someone would stay at IGN for so long, in honesty. Nothing against the publication but it's never came across as a super desirable place to work, yet I would think it has enough esteem to ensure a good job elsewhere.

What would make IGN less desirable than other publications or websites? Seems like he made a decent living in the San Francisco area. Got to write about videogames, appears in videos and podcasts. Maybe that was more than enough for him.

Seems like IGN has lost a ton of on-screen talent over the past few years who became independent content creators. Maybe that's why all of their podcasts are now dry as fuck and focused on quick news recaps versus being personality focused like they were before.

Doesn't seem like an awful place to work considering they have actual funding and have some great people. It's been a great jumping-off point for many to start their own careers. I think that speaks for itself.

I know hating on IGN is cool, but I don't think that has any parallels to the real world.

Going to be working for myself. Hire me.

What.

...that's what you do when you work for yourself. You get clients/customers/audience.

In general I find their content is quite similar. I feel like you would run out of resources for professional development, their style of journalism is also predictable and repetitive. It's rare that an outlet like IGN ever tries anything new, and at least for me, I wouldn't find it very interesting if I were a full time writer. After a while I'd want to move onto new places where I could learn and develop further.

Additionally, it doesn't pay all that well relative to the city.

Who expected games journalism/writing to pay well? What major site is going to pay significantly more?
Also, I don't see any salaries posted for IGN on glassdoor.

Wow, end of an era there.

Good for Fran, though. Best of luck to him. :)

You think Fran was making anywhere near close what others were making? That is actually hilarious. Peer and Fran and those people are probably millionaires by now. Entry level editors probably work for shit though.

Press F for Fran

A pillar of the IGN team for years upon years. He and Matt covering the Nintendo side of the industry was a legendary era. Good luck, Mr. Mirabella!

WIld! It felt like Fran had already been at IGN forever when I started working there--and that was TWELVE YEARS AGO. And his hair is still just as amazing (it's truly glorious in person)

Fran's a great guy and I wish him the best in his new endeavor

Even if he never returned my voicemail for the IGN Editor position after he said he wanted to interview me., grrrrr. WELL I WENT AND GOT MYSELF HIRED ANYWAY, FRAN
