I wish I would've finished this game, as it was great.

I rented a Game Boy Color with this and Conker, and played this a ton, then had to return it. I only had it for a few days, maybe a week.

Then I got my own for Christmas and put lots of hours into Link's Awakening DX, but got stuck at a later temple.

I have always felt the "It was all a dream/illusion" story piece is a complete crutch when it comes to writing, so it never really sat well with me. Still a good game, though.

This isn't even remotely the same as when its used as a crutch, though. This is a giant sky whale who, when sleeping, manifests its dreams in the real world. As a fantasy premise, it's fucking cool.

According to the manual, you embark in a journey to find wisdom and enlightment:

And yeah, as with most early Zeldas, the art was amazing:

Even Katsuya Terada art was amazing in Link's Awakening:

Katsuya Terada's Zelda art is so wonderful. My dream Zelda game would look like that or like the original artwork in the Zelda II/Link to the Past/Link's Awakening manuals. I am fine with the Miyazaki-esque visuals of Breath of the Wild, but this stuff fires up my little kid imagination something fierce

In case any fan of Terada is interested, an deviantart artist has a TLOZ comic book project where he emulates his style. It's fairly well-made

It's been going on for several years so the quality is variable.

The clever thing was "it was all a dream" of somebody else or some other entity, not Link's own dream.

Unlike Super Mario Bros. 2 :D

if you played the game back in 1993 or thereabouts it was kind of implicit you were playing "LttP Remix" so while the ending was cool and memorable it was like 'okay, whatever'

Considering that the game is nothing like LTTP at all, that's pretty weird to feel that way. I certainly never did as a kid!

Link's Awakening is actually more alike the original Zelda in terms of structure than LTTP. And while it brings in many of the refinements that were present in LTTP, it's absolutely its own beast; the inventory system in particular was unique and served as the direct inspiration for OOT's own one.

It also introduced the concept of song playing as a game mechanic into the series; something that became a cornerstone of the series in every subsequent game (up until ALBW).

It's actually one of the most original and unique games in the series.
