Stick an Ubuntu CD and boot from the CD (NOT INSTALL), see if you can open the hard drive and look at files etc.

https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/try-ubuntu-before-you-install

Assuming 1-3 are already done with no results...
In the past what I've done to copy files from a boot drive that wasn't cooperating was to use an ubuntu boot disk that can load without installing, then I accessed the drive from ubuntu, copied the files off and then repaired or fresh reinstalled windows on the drive from recovery partition or disk. Then copied the files back where they belong.
However that assumes the drive is even still functional. If it's on its way out, you might try putting the appropriate windows recovery disk in there and using it to run chkdsk /r on the drive from cmd.

Thanks for this. I never would've considered ubuntu as I've never needed to work with it prior.

Why I am feeling you are already the helpful guy in the friendzone?

I'm not. We've already made out before, and flirt often.

Fixing computers does not impress girls. Do it just because you want to be helpful.

That's more or less why I offered. I guess my thread title is misleading.

Don't fix it. Be honest.

After messing with it for a few minutes while chatting with her, say..

"Yeah so I tried. I mainly agreed to do this to hang out with you, wanna go get some coffee?"

We were going to hang out anyway. I'm not in need of this to see her, just being nice.

I read some more.

Assuming you checked the BIOS correctly to make sure the drive is the boot drive AND the drive is seated/connected correctly, IF the drive is corrupted or broken (which would be the reason it's not booting correctly) then your only option would be a data recovery program. There are a bunch of them you can find on google. None of them are all that good, to be honest.

Before that you could yank the drive and drop it in another computer to check on the data integrity.

Thank you.

What if she falls madly in love with your computer fixing skills and then finds out you're a fraud?

Google. Just like anything related to fixing PC's.

No.. You will be her PC support, and her friend, and her family after this..

.. For free..

She's hooking me up with free things from the dispensary just for looking at it. I'm no schmuck.

Alright Gang, I agreed to "fix my lady's PC with my D drive" and I want to make sure I have this all planned out before I begin. Tip and tricks welome:

1. Grease the landing pad: She's already bringing a bucket of chicken so I figure we'll eat and then skip the finger lickin'
2. No conodors
3. Put the disk in the boot firmly, wiggle it around to make sure it doesn't becomes disconnected at any time

You can try to fix the boot record.

You will need recovery USB or DVD and ability to boot to it.

I have had this happen on a laptop after a windows update. Ended up still having trouble and had to put the hdd in an external case and back everything up, then completely reinstall windows.

Also tell her the 'energy' from those crystals might have corrupted it. Post back with her reaction.

2. Press F12 to enter Bios and be sure the PC is attempting to boot from the proper drive
Specifically with this one...

Chances are there will be at least two devices in the boot options.
- One that is obviously the hard drive, and
- One that says "Windows Boot Manager" and also the name of the hard drive.

Choose the "Windows Boot Manager" one.

I had this issue after re-imaging a PC at work. I selected the hard drive first, and got the exact same message she's getting. After selectnig the Windows Boot Manager option, it worked. In my case, BIOS had these:
Option #1 - Windows Boot Manager (P1: Sandisk Ultra II 500GB)
Option #2 - Sandisk Ultra II 500GB

Have fun, OP. Play safe. :)

I fixed a girl's computer once. And by fixed I mean I built her a new one.
We're married now. IT HAPPENS!
