Is anyone interested in a platform that isn't the Switch for this game?

Yes, I'd like to play the game at a decent resolution and framerate.

People buying this as though it's the next Star Fox game are going to be in for a rude awakening, IMO. It's not that, and it's never claimed to be that. It's like buying Soulcalibur 6 thinking it's a new Witcher game. There's a common thread but they didn't set out to make a Star Fox game.

It's a game where you never leave the ship, it's not motion controlled, and you can play as Fox the entire time. Good enough for me.

Points well taken, and I agree, but once people get their hands on it I think there will be a lot of complaints about how it "doesn't feel like Star Fox."

I always wanted an open world, free roaming Star Fox game. This will scratch that itch rather well. I never buy the on rails Star Fox games, either.

Do we know resolution/frame rate differences yet? I'm curious to try the Star Fox content, but not curious enough if it will be a massive step down in quality

Hopefully you're not interested in a platform that isn't the Switch then!

EZA review was weird, it spent a LOT of time on the Star Fox content, at times the writing was like they almost framed the opinion around it.

Is there going to be an OT for this? Or will this be a game where the review thread just morphs into that eventually? :P

what is starfox? there was adventure, assault, command, 64 remake and zero and all of those games were radically different but none of them really good (except adventure maybe)

this one is a good game so ill take it.

So the difference between the digital starter and digital deluxe is 1 ship, 3 pilots, and 3 weapons. Not as huge of a jump for $20 as i initially thought. Glad i went with the digital starter edition at the last minute.

Quite a few reviews didn't really cover what's in-depth in the game. The GameExplain video began looking a bit deeper but the universe-state stuff and moddable-stuff wasn't laid out in so much detail. It's nice to know the StarFox stuff is "legit" (even though the ship doesn't completely control like an arwing on the planet surfaces), but I still don't have a great sense of how much of the systems-type stuff can turn the game from super-repetitive into combo mixing.

So I've been curious why the PS4 version's controller mount is wired while the Xbox and Switch versions managed to make it wireless. Anyone have any clue to why that is the case?

Colleague of mine got the PS4 version delivered to work today and we checked it out for an hour. Really like what I've seen so far. Planets, flora and fauna remind me a lot of No Man's Sky and the transition between space and planetary sections, hyperdrive etc. look even more impressive here, overall visuals are downright stunning at times (giant structures, lighting, flew through some Mad Max-like sandstorm...). Main complaints so far are the menus (which are a bit cumbersome) and gameplay, controls, sense of speed work far better when "grounded" than in space. Feels somewhat sluggish there, but from what I've seen space combat plays a very minor role anyway, so it's definitely not a StarFox game in disguise.

Gameplay session convinced me once and for all that I need this game on my Switch, but ran into the same problem like some others here, that it costs at least 80 € in the German eShop for some inexplicable reason. Just added some funds to my US account...

This is like suggesting some people bought Smash Bros for Ryu and complained "this doesn't feel like Street Fighter"

People aren't idiots. The game isn't called "Starfox"

I'm glad it's good and I'll just wait for it to reach a better price than the current one.
Yeah, that's my current impression as well. Seems like a decent action/adventure/resource management game, but a bit lacking in the dogfight twitch action I'd prefer. I can wait.

Sounds like it's got that typical Ubisoft repetitiveness as I feared, might give this a miss. Not normally a fan of their games
I'm in the same boat -- Ubisoft's games have always impressed me with a cool idea, but after a while it wears out its welcome a bit too soon. Not sure why that is.

Watching the GameXplain review, has Andre never played a flight sim before? lol

Didn't seem that disorienting. Combat seems a bit basic yeah.

This does feel closer to a Star Fox game than the rumored Star Fox Grand Prix.

The combo stuff is pretty simple in general. You hit an enemy with one type of element, then hit him with a different type, creating a reaction. The reaction is usually some sort of explosion that does a burst of damage. There are some different reactions though, gravity weapons creats a vortex that does damage over time for example. You don't have to think too hard about it, because the game isn't too challenging even on the hardest setting. The only thing you want to make sure of is that you are using the right type of elements. You use some fire type reaction on an 'ice cyclops', for example. Usually the planets lean to a certain type of enemy, so you don't need to switch often.

Mods are neat, but don't have a dramatic impact. In simple terms they usually have the weapon do more damage, or it causes the weapon to use less energy so you can spam it more. Late in the game you do want to have a good mod on most slots just to increase your DPS against the tanky enemies, but you don't need to be that smart about putting the right mods in the right place. There are extra systems to fuse lesser mods into stronger ones or clone mods, but I found them to be unnecessary to get the plat on the hardest difficulty.

Played for 90 minutes. Really solid game. I'm impressed how natural Fox and the integration of Star Fox into the main narrative is. The Gameplay is entertaining and the graphics are good undocked and sometimes jaw dropping and sometimes ugly in docked. Seems a little bit uneven.

Also the options and Infos you get in your first hour are overwhelming. Will play more tomorrow morning. I'm pretty happy with my purchase.

I think most people know full well what to expect, judging by reviews and videos.

It's a dogfighting game, you can use the airwing, you can play as Fox the whole game, his crew is there, he is part of the story in the in game dialogue (which is how most of the story is developed) and was integrated into the cutscenes, he has his own arc with Wolf, the artstyle fits, the controls fits, even the ground combat fits (since many games in the series have ground combat). Sure, the main story is not about him and the crew, but is that a big problem? Not like we care about story in Star Fox games.

It's not a Star Fox game of course, but it's pretty close to what I would expect out of an open world Star Fox game. It's not crazy to pretend it's an actual Star Fox game (which absolutely is the direction I hope the series take). I mean, we're all used to some suspension of disbelief.

- Toys to life aspect is a bit of a scam imo. It's a cool thing, but if you only have a toy or two the game is going to suffer a lot mainly because of a lack of weapons. If you can't switch them around it will become even more repetitive. The digital version with all the stuff is a much much better deal.

I am a bit confused by this as I was told that you didn't need the toy to play the game.

Am I getting screwed over by sticking only with Star Fox and the Arwing figure?

Let's be blunt about it, the game is only interesting because of Star Fox. It would be forgotten and ignored without the character.

So I've been curious why the PS4 version's controller mount is wired while the Xbox and Switch versions managed to make it wireless. Anyone have any clue to why that is the case?

It might have something to do with Sony not allowing third party to use the wireless feature.

I'm in the same boat -- Ubisoft's games have always impressed me with a cool idea, but after a while it wears out its welcome a bit too soon. Not sure why that is.

It's because Ubisoft game play is very paper thin and repetition starts to kick in very quickly. It was why I stopped playing Mario + Rabbids: Battle for Kingdom as while the game had charm, its game play left a lot to be desired and quickly fell into a pattern.
  • Walk a liner path,
  • encounter a battle field,
  • fight
  • walk a liner path, maybe there might a dead end branching path to unlock items,
  • encounter a battle field
It became boring to play.

Glad to know that there has been a good feedback so far. Mind you I need to read the reviews and know how much of it is contributed to Star Fox, but I like to think that they were just Icing on the cake. Either way, kudos to the team and hope they have a good launch.

Are there any reviews that address performance across the platforms? Interested to know if this is worth picking up on my One X or if I should go digital on Switch for the StarFox integration.

This is right up my alley. For years I've dreamed of a Star Fox or Metroid game that plays like Windwaker in space. This will scratch that itch for the most part.

I've also been dying for something with No Man Sky like traversal but with handcrafted planets, that's also more arcadey action game and less like a space sim like Elite, Star Citizen etc. This scratches that itch as well.

Solid 8+ reviews cinches it for me.

I want to know this too. Every review I have seen so far has been very light on any kind of depth. (And most reviews have been Switch, to boot.) (I wanna know about PS4/Pro)

What I do know: all versions are 30fps. So the main differentiators here are going to be:

Resolution
Whether they maintain that frame rate. (I hear Switxh coop is like 20fps.)
And overall graphics/aliasing/level of detail/texture loading.

Never got an email, but apparently best buy Canada shipped my copy because it arrived today. The ship toy is neat and seems like good quality, but fox looks a little derpy lol. Looking forward to trying it out over the next couple of days!

Maybe the game's not the best thing ever (what game is, heh) but I think more reviewers should be able to acknowledge it as that Nintendo Life review does for what it tries to bring to the table, then talk about how, in their opinion, it fails. There are not exactly many polished open world sandbox space action games out there, even after their recent renaissance thanks to crowd funding with Elite and similar games (or long running staples like the X series, which sadly faltered even more than usual in the latest entries). Just reducing it to a middling toys to life effort or whatever that other review suggested doesn't seem fair at all.

Also, why do people say StarFox content is 1-2 hours? I thought you can play the whole game like that, doesn't that mean constant dialogue and scenes with this cast, or at least Fox? Or do you just use the ship but otherwise the game only acknowledges the default cast? Or can you play the whole game as Fox and have him acknowledged but people only acknowledge the extra missions not found in the other versions as StarFox content (so just the introduction missions and the stuff with Wolf I guess)?

As for it getting repetitive, yeah I kinda expected that, you basically seem to loop between 3 gameplay phases. Space flight/combat, ground hovering/combat when first landing in a corrupt planet, ground flight/combat when you first liberate said planet and get full engine power back. Then it's up to mission/encounter design and presenting new vistas and what not to add variety. Hopefully it's a nicely paced game that feels fulfilling and still lasts a while if you just skip the fluff and go for mostly primary/story objectives with the odd side exploration thrown in if it seems like an interesting one.

I looked up the prices for the toys vs digital and its kinda wild how much money you save.

Those tiny, frankly bad quality pilot figures are 8 dollars physical. Meanwhile theyre 4 dollars digital.

Reviews made me excited for this, don't have the time to get it at the moment but this looks like it'll be a fun game to grab over the holidays.
