Keep the design. That was one of the elements of the game that elevated it for me. Feels like the best elements of open world and linear games combined.

But to respond to the actual question, I think that the structure reminds me a lot of older PS1 and PS2 games era, which was completely my cup of tea. However there is still a lot of work to do to make the traversal, exploring and backtracking much more enjoyable. For example, zooming out the camera to get a better view of the overall area while wandering around would be nice, Kratos takes too much space on the screen I really disliked that. Also, I like the details put into the game but sometimes it just feels too much, there was so many areas that felt like I can go there but actually nope because it was not properly shown on the screen. Finally, less random things to get, like a lot of treasure chest is just a little bit of hacksilver, it gets old after sometimes. Anyway, it's the right way but there are a lot of things to consider.

Coming back later to unlock new places isn't really enough to make it a Metroidvania in my book.
But labeling aside, I'm fine with what they did. I never felt overwhelmed and never too constrained past the intro.
I want them to iterate on this design, with stuff like larger, level-spanning puzzles, more interesting battle arenas and more "Oh, I see now" connectivity between level parts inside a realm.

Keep it, open is cool and all but I feel more often than not it can greatly affect the flow of the games' story in a negative way.

I'd like them to lean even harder into the "Metroidvania" direction than they did this time, personally.

Metroidvania? Oh, you mean linear don't you?

Yes, linear just works fine.

Keep the same style of the first one.
I've got noting against open world games, but not every game needs or has to be open world.

Open world is fucking trash and Metroid ( or Souls) style interconnected world is the pinnacle of single player game design, so I think the latter.

Keep the current design. I already thought the boat sections were cool with how open it was, but there is no need to make the whole game open world

I'd like them to make it more linear and action based personally. Both options in the OP aren't really what I'd like to see from more GoW.

after making a hugely successful game (both commercially and critically) the worst thing to do would be to throw the formula out the door and try something new for the next game.

No open world. Improve on the hub system.

Improve level design. Having to climb down 10 foot walls over and over again was so tedious

Make world more connected. You can't go from point a to point b in midgard without a portal.

Fuck the 1 take business. Made the fast travel system super annoying.

Make the game less Metroidvania so it feels more like an epic point A to point B journey without continually returning to the same areas. A few surprising loop arounds is fine but they're more effective when used sparingly imo.

If anything, I want it more linear and with less RPG stuff. Upgrading abilities is cool, but dealing with armour stats is boring for me.

Keep it or go back to what it was in the predecessors.
A more open world (and probably also just a larger one) would not make the game more fun. There are enough games like that, GoW shouldn't stray too far from what it made great.

Keep it.

Open world comes with its own design restrictions, 2018 GOW would have been a lot less special if it was just another open world game with open ended structure.
It's funny you say this, because to me, it totally was.

I thought God of War 3 was way more fun and exciting.

Nope, not kidding or trolling. I didn't even finish the new God of War, I just ended up getting bored.

I just want every realm to be as expansive and fleshed out as Midgard. Every realm beyond Midgard was thin in terms of exploration, discoverables, and purpose to e honest.

I would like the same kind of world again, with a constantly changing/evolving hub area and the same wonderful intricate design where you're constantly surprised because it has looped back around on itself.

I mean it really depends, I kind of felt like GoW was pseudo-open-world.

As long as it doesn't become a typical Ubi open world game.... I think I'd be ok with it.

Keep it how it is. Worked wonders for the game. Allowed them to tell their story in a linear way, while also not using the too restricted Naughty Dog style (I know I'm in the minority on that one)

In fact I'd say I hope they go further into Metroidvania elements. They were pretty light. We need more Metroid Primes in the world.

Whatever fits the vision of SSM, plain and simple.

That said, I think the structure, in all likelihood, will stay similar if they are to deal with Norse pantheon (which is an inevitability).

I hope they don't go open world. There's too much collect-athon items whenever this happens just to make the world interesting. Something more structured like in the first one. It was perfect.

Go full open world and get rid of all the nonsense with Metroidvania level. Add more boss fights and keep the kid drama. Maybe push the story and kill kratos because old and wise Kratos seem generic.

If it was up to me I'd make it even more linear/restricted. I don't think the game gained anything from becoming semi-open world but then again I'm usually done with a game when the final boss is dead anyway..

It's fine as it is now though since it has to cater to more than my play style. It's a good compromise.

I'd struggle to call God of War a metroidvania (seriously, can we chill with that label?) but, that aside, I'd trust SSM to do whatever they want with the sequel after this year's game. They clearly know what they're doing. If they wanna go open world I trust they can do it. I think I'd prefer a more linear experience like the first (fifth?) game though. Keep that tight storytelling.

Just keep the story focused and please don't let open world shenanigans bog down what could be a great recipe for future action games. The one thing the game can borrow from open world games is NPC variety but the devs have made it known that they agree on that front.
