You're thinking of Nite-Owl I. He was inspired by Hooded Justice. Could be an early costume... I guess...
I believe this is supposed to be a continuation of the Watchmen timeline. I imagine this is some new hero.

"We have no desire to 'adapt' the twelve issues Mr. Moore and Mr. Gibbons created thirty years ago," Lindelof wrote. "Those issues are sacred ground and they will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted."

"They will, however, be remixed," he continued. "Because the bass lines in those familiar tracks are just too good and we'd be fools not to sample them. Those original twelve issues are our Old Testament. When the New Testament came along it did not erase what came before it...it all happened. And so it will be with Watchmen. The Comedian died. Dan and Laurie fell in love. Ozymandias saved the world and Dr. Manhattan left it just after blowing Rorschach to pieces in the bitter cold of Antarctica. To be clear, Watchmen is canon. Just the way Mr. Moore wrote it, the way Mr. Gibbons drew it and the way the brilliant John Higgins colored it."

You guys are confusing the hell out of me but if its not an adaption/retelling of the original story, my interest has actually gone way up.

This has been completely off my radar but if its a new Watchmen story, whether that means a reimagining of the concept or some sort of weird quasi sequel/not sequel, I'm in.

The link I posted clarifies it a bit. If you scroll further down there are some set photos which give away some of the world building.

I'm incredibly excited for this.

The fact Lindelof describes it as more of a remix than a straight adaptation gives me hope that he'll do something really unique with the world.

Sounds intriguing and definitely like a sequel just decades later with a new cast of characters. Thats a more interesting idea for a sequel to me than Doomsday Clock.

Watchmen in the era of Trump seems like what Lindelof wants to explore.

Also, They've been filming in Macon? Surprised I never heard anything. Just a stones throw away from here.

I will repeat to everyone in this thread that The Leftovers is one of the greatest TV shows of all time, and season 2 is maybe the best season of TV of all time

Five bucks says officer Cop Man is the new Rorschach equivalent.

Strongly conservative/hard stance on criminals.

Was someone pining for more Watchmen content after that awful film? Ugh.

Hurmm.

Not keen on the idea of carrying on the story. Ignoring the cyclical bookends for a moment, the fact the book 'ends' lends the events more weight than the average comic, which is often treated as a continuum. Plus, the ambiguity of the original's ending is part of the reason it has endured; solidifying what happens after kinda kills that.

Damon Lindelof made a long, public post about the fact that this is not in any way going to be a direct adaptation of the comic. It's going to use a lot of its themes and have a sort of spiritual connection to the source material, but that's it. So if you're not interested in that, that's fine. Just don't be surprised when it's a totally different thing, when it's been said over and over again that this is not in any way a direct adaptation.

The way Lindelof polarizes folks always makes me laugh.

The Leftovers is one of the greatest TV shows ever—full stop. It's tremendous on its own, and even more impressive when viewed as a creative response to Lost. The final moments of The Leftovers, especially viewed in that context, are incredible.

I have zero interest in more Watchmen, and was hoping Lindelof would do something more radical after Leftovers, but I trust him.

I love leftovers but that wasnt solely lindelof. Plus after watching maniac I'm pretty convinced that the writers involved with that are what made the shows emotional beats work.

It's Damon Lindelof. There is pretty much zero reason to be optimistic.

Leftovers and Lost say hello? I mean the ending of Lost really was a trainwreck (imo) but it was great for a while and had a huge impact on tv shows, and Leftovers was one of the best and most emotional shows I've ever seen on tv.

However the less said about Prometheus the better.

Was someone pining for more Watchmen content after that awful film? Ugh.

The movie was great imo, one of the best comic adaptations right up there with The Crow and Sin City.

Also the ending of the movie > Giant alien squid.

Lindelof co-wrote virtually every episode of The Leftovers. There are only 2-3 episodes, out of 28, where he didn't have a hand in writing.

And Lost and Prometheus wasn't solely Lindelof, but he gets tons of flack anyway. He was showrunner on Leftovers for what it's worth.

I feel like Lost/The Leftovers vs. Prometheus/Star Trek/Cowboys and Aliens highlights that Lindelof is so much better at writing for tv than films. The longer format just plays better to his strengths as a storyteller.

that said, he did write the whole third act of World War Z, which is far and away the best (and only good) part of that movie, so that's something.

I strongly disagree. The Watchmen film is a terrible adaptation that is all style and no substance. The ending is also a complete dud that violently misses the point, much like the rest of the film.

Watchmen is a good story that could be adapted well.

This is not that story.

This is Damon Lindelof fanfiction. Whether it stands on its own merits is absolutely in question.

The entire world teaming up to fight an outside threat is ridiculous no matter whether it's manhattan or aliens. I'm not really sure how one works more effectively than the other given the shorter format of film.

A) The film was/is one of the best comic movies of all time.

B) Even so, the people behind the film aren't behind this, so it doesn't matter.

C) Leftovers was one of the best television shows out there.

Wow this looks terrible. I'll stick with films instead like Citizen Kane or Vertigo.

No, the Squid is more ridiculous. That's kind of the point.

Like, I can go into a lot of detail here (neither of us want that :D), but the headlines are:

1) Squid is more shocking visually and narratively;
2) It works better as an 'Other' since it has little to no human characteristics and at least attempts to evoke abject horror;
3) It is a lateral solution, reflecting Ozy's character better;
4) It is a punchline to the premise "What would the world be like if superheroes were real?" ("Well, so are their world-devouring super-monsters then") and a completely comic book solution to a real-world problem which...
5) ...enhances the real-world nihilism of total nuclear war: there is no real solution to this intractable problem, just comic book bollocks (which enforces the final panel more meaningfully: "I leave it entirely in your hands");
6) It actually kills characters we grew to know over the course of the book in a visceral and gruesome way;
7) It's localised to the US making global peace a little less questionable (not believable; questionable), aaaand...
8) ...it's not just a fucking hole in the ground casually invoking 9/11 in a story set in the Cold War :D

IMO, of course.

That's the short version btw :)

One of these days I'll give the second season of The Leftovers a chance to see if truly is a miraculous turnaound from the mind-numbingly dull first one. I actually watched a couple of episodes of S2 but as soon as the wife character showed up again I quit cold turkey. I just do not see what other people see in this show.

The pic gives me Marshal Law vibes, and now I'm suddenly sad that isn't being adapted.

Sad that this isn't an adaptation of the comic. I would say that Watchmen would work better as a series than as a movie.
This is what really confuses me about this. That this isn't an adaption of the actual comic or even the prequels they made either. There is no telling how this is going to even turn out. There are way to many unknowns here for me and their big ones as at that.
