Each pilot has a small skill tree, ability points are learned each level. Ships and weapons have mod slots and you can buy with currency, however a ton drop from various activities. You can spend money and resources to upgrade your home base ship which gives you various bonuses like the ability to combine mods into better quality versions and fast travel on planets.

The currency and resources are also used to build structures on planets like observatories to see more of the planet on your map, and refineries to generate more currency. There are others as well as you progress through the story. All of them can be upgraded. They each also contain an npc which will ask for randomized quests for various rewards.

Awesome thanks

I just received my copy of the game, can't wait to try it tonight.
The toys are far bigger than I thought, with the ship being especially large. As a 27 yo I don't honestly see myself playing with the ship attached to the controller to swap parts on the fly, I'll just scan them every week or whenever is mandatory to do so and just play in handheld mode as I usually do.

Easy Allies review saying that this can kind of standalone as a unique Starfox experience and seemingly takes the best elements of Starfox 2 but expands them to actually be worthwhile...

I'm nearly sold.

I'm all digital on my Switch, though. I know that I can buy the game digitally, but is there a way to get the Arwing toy separate? I've wanted a damn Arwing collectible since I was a kid, and I know it's not exactly the original or N64 design, but I still think it looks cool.

Buy the game digitally now, buy the Arwing used in like 2 months for $5.

Just how many weapons and ships are available in total ? Looking at the toys it seems there's like 3 ships and 5 different cannons... Does the game have more stuff than exists in toys ?

If the content is actually significant I'd be more interested than I am now. I like customization and space games.

10 pilots (maybe 11), 8 ships (5 normal, Arwing, a target exclusive, a GameStop exclusive), and 16 weapons.

So the best deal seems to be the digital US standard version of the game for 60$ (around 52€, so 28€ cheaper than in most EU eShop) since you get 5 ships (including the Arwing), 7 pilots (including Fox) and 12 weapons.

So Starlink is a typical Ubisoft game laden with paper thin game play that is copy and pasted throughout the game with the Star Fox content playing a small role in the game.

Hmmm....not sure if I should cancel my pre-order or not as I really want the Arwing but I don't want to pay a lot for a game that I might not like, especially since I don't plan to buy any of the figures nor do I care for non Star Fox stuff.

Ubisoft are doing amazing work. Nintendo should hire them as soon as possible and made a dedicated starfox game .

Ewww gross no, just no.

Might reconsider getting this digitally after hearing the usual ubisoft gameplay structure.

Id love to enjoy the star fox content unlike Zero but is that really worth paying 60 bucks.

Wide as an ocean, shallow as a puddle seems apt for the planets.

Welp, I'm in. Held off for as long as I could to make sure this would be worth it at full price and it certainly looks like it for my tastes.

Damn I feared for a while that we've already seen everything the game has to offer in the coverage before launch but sad to see it's really that way.

Well at least that makes it easier to decide what to buy in the coming months.

Jesus.

Starlink is £45 ($60) on the US Switch eshop vs £70 on the UK eshop.

The digital version includes loads of stuff not with the physical version and there's an even more expensive version with every ship/weapons/pilot as well.

That difference in pricing is shambolic though.

Wow incredible what they got out of the Snowdrop engine. It really suits the Switch hardware, seems to run better than most UE4 or Unity efforts.

Does anyone have thoughts on the digital standard version ($60) vs. the digital deluxe edition ($80)?

From what I can gather, here is what that extra $20 gets you:

Starships:
  • Nadir
Pilots:
  • Shaid
  • Eli Arborwood
  • Kharl Zeon
Weapons:
  • Hailstorm
  • Nullifier Missiles
  • Meteor Mk.2
For those who have played the game - are any of these add-ons particularly cool or useful? Do they allow for additional tactics that could theoretically spice up the gameplay experience?

I wouldn't be buying this if not for Star Fox, so obviously the standard edition will satisfy that part of the equation, but I also don't want a gimped experience if the difference between the standard and deluxe edition is really that substantial.

Reviews sound good enough. Was worried for a bit, been hoping for a good star fox game.

Unless there's some major change, Starlink will be the highest reviewed original "Star Fox" game in over 15 years

In the very early days of Disney Infinity if your characters "died" while playing, they would "time out" and you'd have to swap another character in. If you couldn't do this then you couldn't play. I think it was eventually changed, though.

That there would be a similar mechanic in this just to get through a gameplay sequence or level is disappointing to read/hear. Between that and not having enough/more loadouts that require physical pieces, it just means that the entry pricing for the gameplay arsenal is only subsidizing the physical figures - since the game itself doesn't materially change. Aside from the Starfox support, unless I am wrong I don't think any of the pieces are unlocking any levels or particular gameplay sequences/scenarios.

This game looks really cool, and the Starfox support looks like fun. But as a value proposition compared to recently-released games that give you access to so many different abilities, it's tough. And when you can build ships that you can't even do physically (like all the wings-weapons on one side), that connection to physical reality is broken. Plus you have to pay extra to play as a woman. Will keep looking for more impressions online.

I have a feeling that this game will be completely forgotten in a year or so. It looks sooo unappealing. The characters look ultra cheesy. Even the name is unappealing and forgettable. I can not imagine it will sell well at all on PS4 given all the competition, and think it will be very very cheap not too far in the future on this system at least.

I am kind of a Eurogamer/Digital Foundry fanboy, but lately, their reviews have been a little too slight.

Thingss I would have liked to have known.
How well does it run? Are there hitches.
Does their opinion of the game's value change at all if considering the fair-priced and nearly-feature-complete digital version.
etc...

Cancelled my physical version and got the digital version for the Switch simply because you get more stuff at a lower price. Not to mention I don't want more stuff cluttering up my room.

The Switch version is just looking rough in terms of graphics and stuff. I mean, sure, I have a switch and I know that sacrifices need be made, etc, but when a large part of the game is going to be the visuals of an alien planet, I'm thinking it may need every benefit it can get from a more powerful console.

[edit] Anyone seen a PS4-specific review?

People who have played, does the standard digital version ($60) offer enough ships and weapons to make the game feel "complete"?

Considering almost all the reviews have focused on the switch version due to fox, it'll be interesting to see how well that version performs next to the other ones

Question: Is there content tied to the ships/pilots in the deluxe pack or is that just considered different type of "gear"?

I mean you find in-game loot as well right? So is there really any point in getting more ships and pilots?

I know Star Fox comes with a bunch of missions.

I'm a sucker for space dogfights and would have bought this on the Xbox One if not for the Star Fox component. And considering Star Fox Zero is the most disappointing game I have ever played, I'll but this and pray it washes that stench away, if only for the briefest of moments.

If you get the physical Switch version do you have to always have a shipped attached to the controller? I just want to scan once and be done with that. Maybe I should cancel my order for now...

It will be around Command's ballpark in the end.

I'll be truly impressed when a game actually manages to surpass Adventures' inexplicable 82.

79 on Metacritic. Puts this in a wait and see category for me. It'll be discounted in a month or two anyway.
