So me and my boyfriend watched the first 3 episodes today and we are loving it. The atmosphere is so tense and everything is so well directed.

The fucking ghosts hidden in the background are really scaring us more than anything else, they have me analysing the background of every single scene and when I spot them I get a chill. Episode 3 was a standout for this when
Theo was about to climb into the basement and you could see a pale face in the darkness behind the ladder, and then later there was a man with a white face stood in the doorway as Theo walked out of the kitchen

Really unsettling, and the most I've been scared by anything in a while.

I didn't have any expectations since I'm not a big horror fan, but this show has blown me away through five episodes. I think the actors, particularly the child actors, have done a great job. They are so endearing, it makes seeing them as adults while knowing some of what has happened all the more difficult and interesting to watch.

I read earlier in the thread people not liking the family drama, but I think that is exactly what has drawn me in compared to most horror. Whatever is happening to the family is interesting, but if I wasn't invested in the characters, I wouldn't care as much and would likely stop watching after a few episodes.

I finished the show this weekend and it was great. It was not a real horror to me. I was not scared at all. Was more of a thriller/mystery that anything else but with jump scares.

All the acting was fantastic especially the kids but the father in present time I did not like. He seemed like a completely different person than the younger version. Two different personalities. When ever he was on screen it took me out of the show.

I'm 5/10 episodes through right now. I'm enjoying it a lot but I don't think I love it as much as some people, I think a big part is I've seen so much horror (I legitimately see like 20-30 horror movies a month), I can tell the director and team behind this series are huge fans of horror and put a lot of heart into it with love for haunted house stories and ghost stories from around the world and just some horror stuff out there in general. That's why I really like it, but so far I think the reason it's really like for me and not absolutely loving is because I kinda' know all the beats they're going for, and we get to an episode which has a theming that's readable almost immediately, and I can already tell how they're going to tie the theming into the overall plot and the ghosts itself, and I can sorta' tell what movies and works each episode took some inspiration from. All of this is not a bad thing at all, I don't say it as a negative, but I actually feel I'm getting less out of this because I'm such a huge fan of horror and can tell the people behind this are such huge fans taking something and executing it very well. I still am really enjoying it, gripping at points even, but I think I thought it'd be less predictable for me than it is so far.

Still, it is fantastic and I can clearly see why it's getting the praise it is, and I think it fully deserves it. It's very well executed, the atmosphere is great, cinematography is, the characters are likably flawed, I do like how they challenge certain things, and how they pay homages to various things without directly riffing and weaving it in a good way into their own story. To see if something in the later half surprises me when I marathon them tomorrow.

Watch episode 6.

Duuuude light spoilers regarding ep 3

Ive seen at least 4-5 ghosts/figures in the background in this ep, shit freaks me out lol. I absolutely love that kinda stuff. Fucking great ep so far too. I just had to pause it at the 39:40 mark because I saw another one
Yeah now that I'm paying better attention there are ghosts everywhere throughout the season, just mostly blending in with the background. I might have to rewatch just so I can see if I can notice them more now that I'm looking for them.

I mean...he kind of IS a different person. I think that's the point.

Loved episodes 1-6, then it became a CW melodrama and I just wanted all of the characters to die. But still, good writing overall, good use of time jumps, good acting, and I'm definitely gonna watch again and look for the hidden ghosts in each episode.

Holy shit, Steve fucking sucks so bad. I'm in the later half of the 10 episodes and it's just too much. Also episode 6 took a weird tonal shift. Halfway through the episode and it feels like a completely different show. Not a fan of the camera work during that episode.

The first half of this show is WAY BETTER than the last half.

The ending felt very generic, and kinda forced in tone. That said, I still really dug the show, but wish it would have kept the same style the earlier episodes did.

Liked it a lot, I think first great horror tv show is actually a label that's deserved here. Definitely best haunted house thing I've seen in a while.

On that note, anybody have a YouTube video with all the hidden ghosts? Couldn't find one, would probably get some views.

Jesus this show in ep 6 and don't think I'll be sleeping well tonight. That ghost from ep 4 will give me eternal nightmares.

Good stuff

I'm on episode 2 and I'm not exactly sure who the Dudleys are. Are they the previous owners?

Just go through episode 6 and I'm a fucking mess. The wife wanted to watch more, but the whole of episode 6 left me openly weeping.

Some scenes were rough for me too on SDR on my OLED. I think it's by design for some of those.

I do find a lot of scenes super warm and yellow though. Anybody else?

Am I crazy or was that finale one of the best hours of television ever? What a ride
I liked it.

It was actually kind of nice to have a break from all the tension and scares. I am a bit disappointed though we didn't get a final scare, but, it doesn't seem like this particular story is supposed to continue.

I mentioned it earlier but the color grading in this show is all kinds of wack. I think it gets better later in the season, but still a lot of *really* heightened (and not always good looking) colors. Lots of yellow/green blotchy skin in some scenes.

Finished it today.

Excellent in every way for the first 9 episodes and then just fizzled out in the last one. Tried way too hard to create a "happy ending".

Well I got up this morning looking for something to watch. Saw the thread on this and figured I'd check it out. Aaaaaand I just finished the entire thing in one shot.

My girlfriend was an extra on this show and said there was a scene that involved a car accident, she was disappointed to not see it in there so I wonder what else was cut.

My tv has different picture settings when HDR is on and switches over automatically. It's pretty dark in particular. There is an HDR Bright mode setting on mine which I prefer. You could also consider turning off local dimming or turning it to low. That will bring your brightness up. I keep it at low.

But that depends on your tv and all that. Mines a

I've mostly been watching the show at night because of this. It looks really dark on my Samsung KS8000.

I'm on an OLED so local dimming is not a factor

my friends and I have 3-4 episodes to go. Does this suffer from the Netflix curse of second half just floundering compared to the first?

Really excited to see this, but holding off for the moment, until I clear off some other stuff first.

But when it comes to great horror shows, I think Channel Zero is up there. The new season only just started it its fantastic. The second season was really great too. But this new season seems really excellent.

But she was still around when they saw it

My point was that I think the cop was referring to
The body in the wall as a separate occasion. I don't remember the exact line, but I thought it was something like "We've now found 2 bodies on your property" during the interrogation

But then again, I don't remember the exact wording so maybe I am wrong.

Just finished episode six, and I think that's enough for one day. It's dark now, and I'm home alone all week.

It's been a really great show for me. I like the slow burns with great stories, and this has been that. The family drama adds a wonderful richness to the narrative. The jump scares I didn't enjoy so much, but the other spoops have been genuinely creepy and unsettling. The subtle scares have been the best / creepiest.

The ending of episode six actually made me feel quite sad. I'm still kind of dealing with it. =/

My friend and I were shedding a few tears at the end. Fantastic editing at the end.

The jump scare in episode 8 is hilarious in retrospect.

I like to think that ghost Nelle was just chilling in the backseat that whole time and finally got fed up with them fighting.

There is one thing that is confusing me about episode 3.
When young Theo touched her mother's hand did she see that her mom was gonna commit suicide?

Halfway through episode 3 and I'm not feeling it. I don't like horror in general because I find it boring and just...not scary. The last horror movie I enjoyed was The Witch and that was really more for the time period.

Then yeah, I would say it should have been self-evident that you probably weren't going to like this.

Well, I'm in it for the long haul because my wife wants to watch it but finds horror too frightening to watch alone. So there's no way out for me.

And that's the real horror.

I will say though that I like the kids. I wish the whole show was just about them.
