i had the plainest possible version of "white bread and kraft singles" sometimes as a kid.

if i have nice cheese and fresh bread in the house i still eat them together with nothing else sometimes. if there's no nice bread i'd also just eat it on a bagel.

american cheese- like the variety of processed cheese product literally called "american cheese," not cheese available here in general- is mostly just tasty as a topping. average american white bread and kraft-tier processed cheese isn't really tasty unless you modify it into a grilled cheese.

I don't like cheese on white bread, but on dark bread or even Pumpernickel?

This is as good as it gets, no need to destroy it with some nasty melting/frying/grilling/whatever. Maybe if your cheese and bread sucks. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That actually has some texture and depth of flavor, though. Also? Close that mother fucker.

I thought to myself "huh? Of course we have grilled cheese."

Then I saw the OP's pic. Why would you ever eat that??

I know some people like eating cheese as solid slices in general... it's not for me
I like my cheese cooked/melted/grilled, but not raw

Americans make hundreds of cheeses you know, not just the abomination with the namesake.

Not to mention most grocery stories have a pretty extensive import cheese section tho some of the younger ones are sadly banned.

A grilled cheese is supposed to have the cheeses grilled. Not necessarily the bread, although that's fine too. Alton Brown has some good videos up on how to make a proper grilled cheese, and unlike the opinion of some of our under-educated friends abroad, they don't involve frying.

Grilled cheese in the US is fried like 95% of the time.

Mayo in a cheese sandwich?

Nah on the outside of the bread to aid in the frying. Butter is much more common though.

See now you're self conscious about it so you didn't use it. Cheese sandwiches and the eating habits of americans are really the least of your issues.

You'll see that I use it at the end of a sentence if I already use it in a post, otherwise I don't. Looks like your attention span is shit, I'm sure you can get some meds for that though.

Of course, since it all started because of a very poor attempt at a witty rebuttal based purely on that fact I mentioned your ability to read. From here it was just a simplistic relative word-association that made you feel clever. Because literacy = punctuation. Gotcha!

Then it was just "are you insecure" misery from then on out, which is just embarrassing. Are you going to call me jealous next? Maybe tell me you know what I am but aren't sure what you are?

Most people fry grilled cheese sandwiches, it doesn't matter what Alton Brown thinks.

nah, it is more like idiocy. also a consequence of irrelevance I guess.

Every other week there is another "Do Americans do this" thread.
No, the rest of the world sees the political shit show going on so they wonder what other things Americans do. It's why they believe everyone wears shoes in their homes, they have such a low opinion of Americans that they believe it's true. It doesn't matter what stupid shit goes on where they're from, everyone thinks they're at least better than Americans. My province elected Doug fucking Ford as Premier but we still unjustly look down on Americans.

Yeah I remember that episode of Good Eats. He wasn't saying frying a grilled cheese isn't the right way to make them, just that the name is misleading since it should actually be called a "griddled cheese"

So he wanted to make a grilled cheese where the name is accurate.

A (ungrilled) cheese sandwich is pretty sad on its own but sharp cheddar and a slice of good heirloom tomato - a tiny pinch of salt and now we're talking.
