I'm a fairly big Dark Souls fan, but they should leave this series alone until next generation, especially after the quick succession of Bloodborne, Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin and Dark Souls III ~ all three games came out within a space of a shy over a year.

And after the rather underwhelming reception for Dark Souls Remastered, both on here and commercially, FromSoftware should take a break and move on to something else for a few years.

Anyhoo, I would love to see the Game of the Year to go to God of War, if only for the sheer audacity of reinventing the franchise. For me, Red Dead Redemption 2 looks more of the same, albeit in a much more detailed living and breathing world.

I would really like to see what Rocksteady Studios have been working on all this time too!

Just thought about Mega Man 11 and where that could get nominated. Probably on Best Action game but more likely get a Best Family Game nomination if anything.

Hoping for an announcement from NetherRealm Studios. MK 9, MKX and Injustice 1 and 2 all came out in April/May, so TGA would be a great place to show their new game.

Hoping but not expecting to see a Splinter Cell trailer and a CrossCode nomination. Also would be great if Sony at least remembered about the MediEvil remake, at the moment I feel like it is not even happening lol

I wouldn't be suprised if we have another trailer of Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt had few The Witcher 3 videos during Video Game Awards, so Keighley probably talked with them about doing something for TGA.

If we are talking about Game of the Year, I think it will probably be a fight between God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2.

I'm actually pretty curious to see what they can get for unveils.

Like, going through the list, at least for unannounced titles:
  • It's very late in the gen, and most 2019 games are already revealed, along with a few early 2020 games, and it's not clear people would be willing to unveil Day 1 crossgen games yet.
  • People who know things seem to insist that Rocksteady's next game isn't being unveiled until at least early next year, or maybe not even until E3.
  • Harry Potter is apparently a late 2020, so we're unlikely to get a formal unveil so early.
  • Warner Montreal is a tire fire.
  • Netherrealm is not impossible, but it depends if their next game is actually for this generation. IIRC it's supposed to be something that's not Injustice or Mortal Kombat if it's this gen.
  • The Avengers was supposed to unveil this year, but I'm not convinced that game wasn't rebooted mid process, so that might not be true anymore.
  • I'm not clear on what generation Peopke Can Fly's new game is for.
  • Otherwise, Square Enix feels kind of unlikely to announce Japanese games here. They've never done that before, right?
  • Splinter Cell was still in the concept pitching stage as of E3 2017 according to Yves Guillemot, and Ubisoft takes forever with their heavy reworks, so I doubt that's ready.
  • It's most likely too early to show Avatar, given we haven't even seen anything from the second film to my knowledge.
  • Watch Dogs 3 was being heavy teased last year, so that's probably one of Ubisoft's few remaining current-gen games that could be shown.
  • I honestly don't think Bethesda/ZeniMax has any unannounced games left for this gen that aren't mobile, and I'm not sure Geoff is willing to show mobile games.
  • Over at Activision Blizzard, I guess Toys For Bob has a new IP that could plausibly be this generation given we've already seen a clip of it on their job site.
  • The only thing that feels plausible out if EA is either an EA Original titles or maybe Respawn's Star Wars game, but normally EA doesn't market things until 6 months prior to release.
  • Take-Two does have a new IP from Firaxis they could plausibly show, but I'm not sure if this is the right audience.
  • This doesn't feel like a ridiculous time to show Borderlands 3, assuming that the game didn't get delayed for multiple years. Probably one of the most likely options.
  • BioShock 4 is super early.
  • Hangar 13 is unlikely to ship another game this gen.
  • Rockstar is unlikely to ship another game this gen.
  • Ken Levine is unlikely to ship another game.
  • All of Private Division's games are 2020+ IIRC.
  • Namco will plausibly have either some anime game they think will appeal in the West.
  • Namco has also been making a Fast & Furious game with Slightly Mad for a long time, and this would be an appropriate venue.
  • I'm not sure this is the right venue for Company of Heroes 3.
  • Creative Assembly's new IP would fit, but I very strongly suspect that's crossgen and won't get shown.
  • I can't imagine Sega Japan showing anything.
  • Capcom... it's not impossible. Maybe the Monster Hunter expansion? It's not clear to me what they actually have coming up in the short term.
  • THQ Nordic will probably have something, but those are usually pretty low profile games.
  • On the THQ note, Deep Silver is working on a variety of things, but Volition sounds like they got the entire studio rebooted, and I'm not sure if whatever Dambusters was making prior to the Time Splitters IP purchase (which was not long ago) still exists.
  • I really doubt Koei Tecmo would be there.
  • I'm going to assume I don't have to justify excluding Konami.
  • Microsoft feels like they're mostly focused on next gen, but I could imagine more formally showing off Halo, if we count that as unannounced.
  • I'd be surprised if Sony announces a big new AAA game for this gen outside maybe a new Gran Turismo.
  • Nintendo is mid-gen so they have a few options. Metroid feels like the most obvious choice if they're ready.
  • I'm not sure Bayonetta 3 is ready to show.
  • Well, Cygames did imply they're announcing another new game this year, and did say they wanted to make an impression in the West...
  • I'm not sure if there are any publishers I missed.
I'm expecting a pretty heavy focus on showing new content for announced games due to where we are in the generation, with next year having way more brand new announcements.

Geoff visited Platinum and From earlier this year, so I expect trailers for Bayo 3 and Sekiro.

Death Stranding is a lock and will probably steal the show. Again.

Bethesds will show more Doom Eternal.

Sony probably wants to plug Days Gone one last time.

Geoff asked which game people wanted to see the most and Metroid Prime 4 seemed to be the most requested game, so that and a Prime Collection for Switch.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a Jedi Fallen Order debut trailer as well.

I predict God of War to probably win something for story or characters or something.

I hope the Game Awards actually shows more awards being given. There were a bunch that just happen off camera and I think some even before the show started. Like, what's the point if you don't get the people on stage to accept the award for people to see and get excited about?

I thought of another prediction. Remember when they got that band to perform songs from the 5 GOTY nominees last year? They'll do it again but have that designated for the Best Original Score category. They play a song from each of the nominees and then reveal the winner.

GOTY is between RDR2 or God of War. As much as I love Spider-Man it ain't gonna win. Definitely getting nominated though and I can see it pick up a few awards. I'm guessing the GOTY nominees will go like this.

RDR2
God of War
Spider-Man
Monster Hunter World
Forza Horizon 4

The studio I expect is Rocksteady given their relationship to the game awards. I will hope for Retro games at every event, especially because Reggie seems to like the game awards... I won't get my hopes up though.

GOTY Nominees:

  • God of War
  • Spider-Man
  • Monster Hunter: World
  • Fortnite
  • Red Dead Redemption 2

Winner: God of War. I don't think RDR2 is gonna be as amazing as people say. Yeah, it looks pretty and it's immersive, but I don't think it will be as fun and have a better story than GoW.

Reveals:

  • Death Stranding - Maybe some actual info on how this game plays, plus a release date drop.
  • Rocksteady DC IP - Green Lantern Corps. Make your own lantern, co-op, etc
  • Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order - First trailer. Doesn't show anything really except some main Jedi character
  • Spider-Man DLC - City that Never Sleeps. Winter-themed?

I'm really pulling for it as well. It really was a feel good moment with how well the game did critically and commercially... With the lukewarm reception to Ascension, and then SSM's cancelled game, the layoffs, etc. A fantastic achievement! I'm sure RDR 2 will be great, but I'm just so burned out on open world games right now.

Forza Horizon 4 will get nominated for and win a surprising number of categories.

I'd guess noms for GotY, Art Direction, Audio Design, Ongoing Game & Sports/Racing, with it winning 2 or 3 of those.

To anyone claiming Fortnite isn't a lock for the Best Game category, it did come out in EA last year, but it has conquered the gaming world this year. They put PUBG in the category for Best Game last year when that was on top of the world and I'd be stunned if Fortnite didn't get nominated for 2018. I'd much rather have a game like Celeste in its place, but no way is that taking a spot over the most popular game out there right now.

PUBG also released in early access, and then had its full release all in 2017.

Fornite released in early access last year, and it won't reach full release this year either. It should not be nominated.

Fair point. Again I'd be estactic if a game like Celeste or even something like Dead Cells took the last GOTY bid over Fortnite. Maybe another AAA game like Forza Horizon 4 or maybe COD BLOPS 4 if that explodes can take Fortnite's place. I still think Fortnite might get nominated on popularity alone, but I could be wrong.

If anything, Epic Games could be nominated for developer of the year for the megaton success of Fortnite and how they've handled the success.

Why are people continuing to list Fortnite as a GOTY nominee?

It came out last year.

Just to clarify this point -- With the growth of games as a service, last year we made a change to the rules. Games "released" in past years are eligible for Awards in all categories, so long as the work done on them in 2018 merits a nomination. This is not unlike how the Emmys recognizes "seasons" of a TV show. So yeah, there could be some scenario where Overwatch wins GOTY for a second time one year. We also have the "Best Ongoing Game" to specifically recognize these titles.

It's ultimately up to the voting outlets to decide what deserves nomination, but we don't disqualify a game just because it shipped in a previous year.

Red Dead Redemption 2 and God of War will get most of the nominations and awards. One of them is gonna be GOTY.

I hope GoW gets the best original score award. Bear McCreary killed it with the OST!

Spider-Man doesn't get many nominations other than for the voice acting TBH.

I hope they present all awards on the stage instead of the behind the scenes thing and they just announce an award with a popup on the screen.

I think Sony will have the most announcements/trailers. No PSX this year and they usually show off their big games at the VGA so that's a safe bet.

God of War doesn't have the impact of a Rockstar produced game. So my vote goes for RDR2 as GOTY.

My predictions for announcements:

- New DMC5 trailer showcasing V.
- Another RE2 trailer.
- Death Stranding gameplay trailer.
- New Bayonetta 3 video.
- Another Sekiro trailer
- New IP from Ninja Theory
- Borderlands 3 reveal
- New IP from Netherrealm Studios.

Yeah R6 is a great example -- it was nominated for Best Ongoing Game last year. It's best years weren't the initial year it was released. That's work that should be eligible - and it is.
