That sucks but after viewing their movies in both IMAX and Dolby, I prefer Dolby by a long shot. Everything is better. Sound, screen, seats. Just perfect.
Have you been to a real IMAX? Not the fake smaller ones. I too love Dolby and watch 90% of my movies there, but I can't pass up the screen on IMAX movies filmed with IMAX cameras. So immersive. Can't wait to watch First Man

Infinity War and Mission Impossible definitely put IMAX over Dolby for me when the cameras are used.

And Infinity War didn't even use the usual cameras to fill up the whole screen. Mission Impossible helicopter sequence was incredible in IMAX, as was the Burj Khalifa scene from MI4

I saw Suicide Squad in a legit IMAX screen lol also Avatar. But it's been so long since I've seen another. Aquaman should be beautiful in legit IMAX.

It's been so long I can't really remember to compare it with Dolby.

You should probably try to watch it on a real IMAX screen if you have one near you.

I'd be interested in hearing your opinion after that

Is there a map of real IMAX AMC screens? I've traveled to Indy to see The Force Awakens in real IMAX and up to the Henry Ford Museum to see Interstellar (twice) and The Dark Knight Rises, but I don't think that one is 70mm.

Ah but see those did not film with an IMAX camera. Only a select few films actually do. Those all should have just been the normal aspect ratio, but on a slightly bigger screen. Now imagine if the entire wall you saw in front of you was filled.

Nolan always has a few scenes in IMAX (TDK, TDKR, Dunkirk, Interstellar all had some), Mission Impossible series, some Marvel, and now First Man. I used to exclusively watch all blockbusters in IMAX until I found Dolby. Now I watch most there but IMAX for the special ones.

I think this is still current

http://lfexaminer.com/theaUSA.htm

I don't know what the screen at the Henry Ford Museum is, but it's not IMAX. And it looks like you would only have seen TFA in real IMAX if you saw it at the Indiana State Museum

Whew, just signed up for A-list last night. GF and I are seeing First Man today ($17.50 for IMAX!!) and since I want to see El Royale and Beautiful Boy this week, it made sense to sign up.

I've always been under the impression that Dolby is better than IMAX? What's the verdict?

I'm not sure why you seemed to take my opinion personally, but whatever. I'm also not sure why you seem to think it's based on a single location

I don't know why you thought that I took your opinion personally.

If you aren't basing it on one location, then you should know between both of the premium formats it's incredibly hit or miss.

I live near one of the best IMAX screens in the country. There are a few subpar ones. The Dolby Cinema experience hasn't really shown why it should be a force to be reckoned with.

I've seen your post from a chromebook and smart phone the difference is nearly identical but still viewable all the same

Dolby is overrated too. Awful red hue, small cinema, overblown sound. Movies aren't event shot in the format.

I can do judgments on a single location too!
They actually got rid of the red hue at my local AMC. I remember being bothered by it while watching BR2049. But when I watched A Star is Born, ther red lights were replaced with blue instead and I didn't notice it as much or even remember any blue hue. Not sure if all AMCs are doing this but it's much better now.

Or that I know what I generally like, and that it doesn't align with yours.

It doesn't have to align with my views. That is the whole point of having a discussion...

This doesn't contribute at all. Why would you post this?

It still felt like a LieMax experience though. Regal has the RPX, which isn't very different from what Dolby Cinema is doing

As I said, the only reason to see a movie in IMAX is if it's a real IMAX and the film was filmed with their cameras. I can't imagine anybody thinking those movies are better seen in Dolby, but then again this is the internet. For everything else though Dolby is king in my book. Not sure why everybody is passive aggressively fighting.

Yet you're still here dismissing me completely and not hitting the talking points of why you prefer the format?

Well, for one, you never asked me to elaborate, probably because you were too busy throwing around baseless accusations like this one

I'm not saying your trolling, but feels a bit disingenuous.

But since you're curious, I don't find the bigger screen to be any more immersive--in fact, I find it to be a hindrance. I'm not a fan of being that close to the action, especially with how the range of what I'd consider to be a decent seat with a non-distorted view seems greatly reduced. Furthermore, I've found the actual seats at the Dolby theaters I've been to be much more comfortable than IMAX's offerings, and I would probably opt for the comfortable seating regardless, even if I did prefer how IMAX looks.

You're still personally attacking me though. Look, I'm trying to get more info, which is what the latter of your post is.

It's not about the big screen. I would gather I've been to more cinemas monthly that most on here. A majority of the IMAX are no different in size and extra features than the Dolby, RPX, 4D, etc.

The traditional IMAX screens are huge! Usually in an outdated cinema. It doesn't benefit an up close experience. Still, a ton of movies are formatted for the screen, which is not common for the other knockoffs.

Dolby has better sound and seats. Legit IMAX has better screen. Is that the general consensus? Also Dolbys screens contrast is better imo.

What? I never attacked you dude. Pointing out your baseless assumptions and dismissals is not an "attack."

I was talking exclusively about traditional IMAX and not LieMAX; apologies if that wasn't clear.

I'm not really really a videophile or anything, but from what I've been told before Dolby uses dual 4K laser projectors while IMAX uses dual 2K (non-laser) projectors. So with Dolby you're getting a higher res picture with better black levels, better sound, more comfort with the recliners. I would almost always prefer Dolby just for the recliners tbh.

My only issue with Dolby has been a theater (mis)configuration one, sometimes my theater keeps the trackway floor light strips on way too bright in the bottom area (closest to the screen where nobody sits) and those red lights can shine/reflect into the corners of the screen and give the corners a red hue. I complained once and they lowered the lights and it was fine.

...yet I assured you it was a misunderstanding and you are still on about it.

Like I said, the traditional IMAX don't have the best seating setup due to volume and profit, but it can deliever better picture and sound than most new knockoffs strive for.

Yes. And Dolby has objectively better contrast.

IMAX has dual 4k laser projections as well, but it's a new thing and they would need to upgrade their equipment.

Uhh, when did this happen? I'm still "on about it" because it was a "misunderstanding" you invented, and then you tried to turn it around on me as if calling you out for that is an "attack."

Because we are still talking about it! You said my post meant one thing, and it didn't, so I clarified it. It just feels weird at this point

I think they are only using it to upgrade real IMAX screens, aka 15/70 projectors

Ah bummer, I have a pretty good AMC but it's a LieMAX. I know they upgraded the entrance area recently but not sure if the inside of the auditorium was renovated too. Last IMAX movie I saw was my rewatch of MI Fallout this summer I think.

Better contrast, sharper image, HDR so better colors by far, Dolby Atmos is a real thing and enhances the movie experience by far. Like those are simply the facts based on the technology. IMAX only has a better screen and I live in a state with one of the best IMAX theatres in the country too.

But it serves no benefit for a film in a superior format.

Got an e-mail from AMC, some price changes occurring as well as some other changes

Price is going up in january to 21.95 for 10 states and 23.95 for 5 states, remaining 19.99 everywhere else. Your price still remains locked in for 12 months from your sign up, so for those who signed up in August, the $19.99 remains till it's up.

Every benefit is staying for 2019
Minimum age is now 16 instead of 18
All AMC theaters that arent Classic will be reserved seating by June
Mobile food ordering is expanding to more metro areas

So I was under impression that a pre-ordered ticket doesn't lock out one choice until the week of the film. Not lock one out, essentially leaving me with two choices, for the weeks leading up to the film? Did this change?

So I just signed up. Apologies if it was asked in this thread already, but if I made a reservation for a screening, and then canceled before the printed show time, does the 'refund' go back toward my three a week allotment?

It did this at the very beginning of the program (for about a month or two), but they fixed it as far as I'm aware. I think the only caveat is that you can have up to three movies pre-ordered at a time, but pre-ordering for a showing a month from now will no longer affect this week's show totals like it used to do.

Yes, instantly goes back towards your weekly allotment, I believe.

Great, thanks for the clarification!

This is good to know too. =]

Sorry for bump, but the last couple days I haven't been able to log in on the A List app. It keeps saying "a network error occurred." I'm definitely connected, tried on Wi-Fi and data with no results. This happening to anyone else?
