Summary
Near locked 60fps on Xbox One and X, sizeable improvement over 360 release especially in cutscenes. 16x AF on X. Best place to play both games. Shame about no X enhancement.

Filtering sure is nice but an X patch would be fantastic.

All good but Konami out to re release the proper 4K/HD collections on PC\Switch\PS4\XB1. Sounds like easy money

Such a missed opportunity that many HD collections like this didn't get a PC port, MGS being the one that stings the most. I wonder how much mods could've salvaged the Silent Hill one :p

Still super neat here in any case, very impressed at the X forcing 16xAF across all games like that. If they do any more 360 X enhancements you'd think and hope they'd make the MGS games top priority, I bet these games would hold up magnificently at 4k

EDIT: Oh wow, didn't know about the third person camera in MGS3: Subsistence leading to more fps drops

I don't feel like 4K resolutions would be that big of an improvement tbh.

Great to see this game playable on current consoles.

They forgot to look at the RPCS3 version of the game, which will be the definitive in a couple months / 1 year max with the speed of improvements that emulator is making.

The jaggies look noticeably cleaner on the Xbox One.

How do you explain that if it's running at the same resolution and same AA?

I bought these games for the nVidia Shield a year ago and the performance in those versions seemed fine for the little time I dabbled. Wonder how they stack up to playing on Xbox One X -- I actually don't have any games for the Shield other than these two, so I don't generally have a good feeling for how powerful the Shield is, though I guess it uses the same Tegra chip that powers the Switch so ... give or take roughly on par with Xbox 360 and PS3??

Just wondering if this would be a good get for my Xbox One X or if I'm fine with the Shield versions. Got the 2017 Shield TV, but I had originally bought it simply as a media device and not as a game console. Couldn't resist when I saw MGS2 and MGS3 HD on there, though. :p

I bought it for my XB1X and also own it on PS3. X version plays well and looks clean (even at 720p) but what i don't like is the crushed blacks like most 360 games and even Xbox One games with a resolution under 1080p.

PS3 and PS4 never had a problem with crushed blacks. X enhanced games are fine luckily.

Glad DF mentioned that there hasnt been anymore enhanced 360 BC games.
I really hope MS works on a solution that the user can decide for 4k in every game or something.

The lack of pressure sensitive buttons make this certainly not the best way to play.

Not even a contest, those games are glitched hard on RPCS3 and they run like utter shit. Also, they are not futurologists to be able to tell how they will look in a year. Hell, PCSX2 still doesn't run the originals without issues.

Solid video (pun intended) but imo for MGS2 the PC version is the way to go with the new fan patches and it runs on toasters. If you want to search for an used copy, that is.

Same for SH2 and 3. The work fans have put onto ironing out the PC version of 2 is nothing short of amazing.

For MGS3 I agree, until emulators get better this is the best version.

No they're not in the context of the games' controls. It's the same reason the Vita port sucks which is the lack of pressure sensitive buttons among other things.

I think moving the raising and lowering of your gun to a separate button was an improvement. Having to partially press the button to aim and fully press to shoot would be an awkward control scheme when bound to a trigger, let alone a face button! I played the PS2 version of the game religiously (even beat it on European Extreme, which I think is my crowning gaming achievement), so I got comfortable with the controls, but I'm well aware they're not ideal.

I wonder if this smooths out the slowdown problems in MGS3HD. They're too far into the game for DF to be expected to cover in one of these videos (Groznyj Grad and the final boss area are the worst affected), but on the PS3 at least MGS3 can drop to what feels like half-speed when the framerate starts to chug.

The pressure-sensitive face button shooting controls were fine back on the PS2 because the Dual Shock 2's buttons were soft and spongy. On a Dual Shock 3, with much 'clickier' face buttons, they're an absolute chore, and I usually resort to double-tapping R2 to rapidly unequip and re-equip my gun rather than try to lift my thumb up off the button aaaaagonizingly slowly. I've always wanted to try the way the Xbox HD Collection's controls worked, to be honest.

Were the controls a bit awkward on 360 due to not having analog buttons like PS2/3?
Nice visual improvement though.
It's similar to vita controls

The ps3 one has the analog system though

the only issue with mgs2 pc with patches is I cannot seem to get AA to work or get it to run past internal resolution of 1080p

No. I can play these 2 masterpieces on the Vita wherever I am. Then, there's this luxury:
Transfarring – Continue your saved game no matter where you are by transferring your trophies and save-game data back and forth from your PlayStation®3 and the PlayStation®Vita

Yes thats what i mean. Irc the last batch of 4k 360 games was in April 2018? That batch included Fable Anniversary.

And since then nothing.
Yeah we already discussed this in the BC thread. If Microsoft doesn't announce anything at the end of the year the X enhanced initiative is probably dead. Would be a damn shame.
