Thanks for the heads up, changed my message from "anyone" to "friends only" for now. I hardly ever get messages from strangers, but better to be safe than sorry.

If you have alternate accounts, don't forget to change the settings for that one too. I noticed an uptick in PSN spam messages this year, and it's super annoying.

Can't believe phishing scams and the like are on PSN/XBL. :(

Yeah the amount spam shit I got on PS4 was maddening. Had to set it to friends only about a year ago.

It's not too much better on XBL either. I get so many random messages asking to buy my gamertag or just random bullshit.
No kidding. My messaging has been set to friends only for years now. Playing GTA Online for any amount of time is an invitation for filthiest of hate messages as well.

Mine was already set, but I did get a spam friend request just today. I don't play online, so "hey, it's me" is just a surefire way to make me suspicious.

Mass spam on PSN popped up immediately after friends list and messaging became accessible via PC web browser (and mobile app as well, though less spread).

Wonder if a message stability update is hitting us later today.

I'm not sure I understood your post. Could you clarify please?

If this is indeed a malformed message attack, then this should be fixable at the server without needing a firmware update.

Russell add the "friend requests" too in the OP/title since you can get those messages from that too.
WTF? Shit. That makes it 10x worse since you might assume someone was sending a friend request when you played BO4 or some other MP game.

Yeah, but it's just insane how bad it is. I get a ton of user created groups that include me wherein I'm offered PSN cards or some other shit. I originally didn't have my PSN PMs private since I used to communicate with other PSN people. Now I can't even do that without fear of someone messing up my console.

Yeah I have my settings set to Friends Only for messaging and No One for friend requests just incase this shit can spread through that too.

Sad, sad people in this world.

I changed my messages and friend requests to No One. Can't take any chances so close to Red Dead.

Double checked mine, had a feeling I was already set to private because a year or so ago I was getting a lot of spam messages,l advertising a bunch of shit like cheap games/cd keys, sex chat, etc.

I read a lot of SCPs in bed before going to sleep and that was one of the only ones that I've regretted doing that for. Well done.

Had to set everything to private after Sony let people start forcing you into spam message groups without actually being your friend, the PS4 social features have become an utter cess pit of "freepsncodestotallynotavirus.tk" bots. You'd think adding a filtering/limiting option that sits in the mid-ground between "send me everything from everyone!" and "I never want to be contacted by any random person ever again" would be an idea, but ho hum.

Any update on this? (Sat 9:58pm EST) October 13

Checking here and the reddit thread. I pug on d2 and this has pretty much killed my ability to do group activities.

Hope this gets patched sharpish and that everyone who exploited it swiftly gets permenantly banned.

I turned on my PS4 and have a notification that I recieved a message at 12:34 AM, it does not say from who. My PS4 isn't locked up and is running fine. I'm scared to do anything. Help?

It seems the fix is relatively easy and takes a few minutes. Just need to reboot in safe mode and rebuild database apparently; which doesn't make you lose any data so don't worry.

It could just be a normal message you received, we have no idea how widespread this is yet.

I wish PSN would stop asking for my password on my own damn console when I try to change a setting.

are you kidding me?

how is shit like this possible in 2018.. certain characters in a text msg fuck up a PS4? yeah i know not permanently bricked, but still. ridiculous.

Surprise, surprise, complex systems are still the product of thousands of man-hours of work by teams of hundreds, not some sparkly package descending from heaven in all its glory when a company fills out a research progress bar.

For every disastrously broken problem that makes it out live, probably hundreds were squashed.

If one of those messages are sent to you, just turn off the console.
Take the phone app and erase the message.
Then press down the power button for 7 seconds to make the PS4 go into Safe Mode.
Finally proceed to Rebuild the Database to fix the problem. (This is not factory reset, nothing will be erased).
Of course, after all that, report the dummy account to Sony.

Others say that removing the message from the phone app is enough to fix the problem, but there are some conflicting reports on this.

I guess you can try just removing the message with your phone and wait a few minutes first.
Can you erase the message on the PlayStation's website?

Ok, guys, there's some conflicting info here, some say you need to factory reset to fix this, some say restoring database is enough. Which one is it now? Pretty big difference between these two options.

Try the simplest fix first? Delete the message via the PS message app on mobile, rebuild database, try logging in again.

If it doesn't work, move onto the next. Simple stuff.

This happened to a friend last night. Some dude got angry after losing a game of RL.
