PSA: Set your messages to private on PS4 (glitched message can lock up your PS4)

I haven't tested it on my own so I can't 100% sure, but I've read solutions people have posted online and apparently that works.
The latter, I've had people I know IRL sending me bugged whatsapp messages just to troll, it's the epitome of humor to some people.
Probably better safe than sorry. I know spam bots found my US account despite it never once touching a MP game.
So this thing just cuts you off immediately without you even having to open the message? lol

Also it seems to only affect the account u got the message. In the article the guy loged in with another account and everething was working fine, just the account he got the message was getting the error.
These people need a punch in the face, its not funny and they need to know one way or another.

Went to do this, realized I already had it set to friends only. Must have done it back when spam accounts used to add you to groups to try and push bullshit and I was getting sick of it.

Disappointing this is a thing and of course it happens to PS4. I still remember how we couldnt play online for an entire month or something on PS3

Sounds like some kind of unsupported character is all the message needs to contain. You don't even need to open the message either, just as long as your console gets it, it will crash.
Go to your messages, press the options/start button and should say "privacy setting" click it and it'll let you change.
So it looks like a normal message? How are some saying open via your phone then? As in they know what they look like?

Most likely the PS4 itself doesn't support it, worst case scenario it does support it but it causes something inside the console itself somehow, so use the phone to delete the message instead. As for people not sharing what it looks like, makes sense as to not spread it for more assholes to abuse it. Reporting it to Sony is what matters now.

How can it be possible that a text message you get from a random person that you don't even open can brick or lock your console??? How's that even possible programming wise???

Yeah the amount spam shit I got on PS4 was maddening. Had to set it to friends only about a year ago.
It's not too much better on XBL either. I get so many random messages asking to buy my gamertag or just random bullshit.
I can't remember the last time I've used messaging on my ps4, my group typically uses discord for everything.
I've only got a couple of spam messages, nothing major.
However, I think Sony needs to implement a system similar to Steam where you must spend $5 on the store (just adding the money to the wallet is enough) to enable features like messaging. It cracks down on spam a lot because the spammers will have significant cost if they get their accounts banned for spamming.
I'm not really sure how a special character would cause an issue, but usually programs have to make assumptions about what data is being passed from one part of a program to another. Making a bad assumption or not including some way for the program to recover when the data is something not expected can cause issues.
For instance, a common rookie mistake is to create space for the computer to store a string of letters, but not limit the length of that string. When a user enters something longer than the reserved space, it can overwrite stuff next to where you saved it. If a hacker exploits a flaw like this in the worst cases they can take total control of your system (although that's rare).
I guess it's also good to switch my privacy settings to "no one" for all aspects. Since I don't really have online friends or friends who own a PS4.
