This better be horror, I've been craving an actually good horror show. Went into Castle Rock expecting it to be at least a bit scary and was disappointed.

I see Carla Gugino and Henry Thomas are reunited again since Gerald's Game. It's gonna have to go some to be as scary as the image of Elliott from E.T. cracking one out in that film though.

I'm super excited for this and Apostle to drop tomorrow! I just need to decide which to watch first.

I'm always curious when people say "that book wasn't scary", as to what books they do find "scary"? I go to horror stories to be creeped out, unsettled, tense, and made to feel uneasy by getting into the minds of the characters and atmosphere, but the way people tend to go "read it. Not scary." about books makes me think they're expecting to be startled in the way horror movies scare you. But they're different. You as the reader need to pull more weight and invest yourself with a book or story for it to be effective. It's not a passive, "impress me" activity.
Oh shit, haha. I just assumed it followed the plot of the book.

Why bother changing it this much? Just give it a different name.

IMO, there has yet to be a good and faithful adaptation of that book.
There hasn't been a good adaptation because the way the book is creepy and psychological doesn't really translate directly to the way movies are scary. Most people would be complaining "nothing happened" or "that wasn't scary, that was funny" or "it was so cliche" so they change it to be more film like.

I guess I've never found a book scary but some are creepier than others. House of Leaves comes to mind.

Netflix makes several more good tv shows a year than every network tv station and people still call their shows shitty.

Watched the first episode and I am hooked. Can't wait to delve into more episodes tomorrow.

This is the kind of show you want to watch at night, with the lights off and no distractions.

Edit: On ep 6 now, few mins in and I can tell this one is gonna be special.

Watched the first 2 and it's already top tier netflix. The storytelling, atmosphere, the way the director plays with your mind, the mystery...I'm all the way in.

Glad this is getting good reviews. Trailer didn't quite do it for me, but definitely going to start this over the weekend.

Also, if you haven't, watch Robert Wise's The Haunting from 1963. It's very faithful to the book and is excellent. I still find it pretty terrifying, just through its use of sound and camerawork.

Places
Watched the first episode. The only thing I dknt like so far is that this is a showcase of Vizio M series poor backlight and contrast, at least during daytime. Can't see shit in half the scenes.

Waited till it's dark and binged the first half.
It's fucking amazing. Never read the book, but it's like a cross between The Conjuring (first one) and It and I love it. Having each episode dedicated to a character does wonders for the family drama and slowly filling in pieces of the big picture. Only thing that irks me a bit is they cut back and forth between present and past a lot, and despite coming up with all the match cuts to motivate them it does get a bit tedious after a while.

And goddamn that ep 5...I'm going to sleep with the lights on tonight.
Are there many jumpscares?

Because I hate jumpscares.
At least a few solid ones each ep so far, but they're used sparingly (usually to great effect) and you can always see them coming.

Flanagan is the most underrated horror director in the game right now. Cannot wait for this.
He's got some good stuff, but man Before I Wake is one of the biggest turds I've watched in a long time.

I'm a few episodes in and this show is top tier though. Some of the best scene transitions I've ever seen, and they keep one upping themselves.

It gets better as it goes along. Episode five was my favorite of the bunch, it's a perfect little horror movie by itself.

I mean, it's horror, and he makes like...two films a year, seemingly? You're gonna have some stinkers. There's a reason Before I Wake was buried theatrically, and only showed up on streaming years later. Right now, he's operating at a different level.

I have no idea why he's making Doctor Sleep, one of King's worst novels, but I trust him at this point.

Yeah you're right, the other two movies he did that year were great. And this show is incredible so far, it's art in every sense of the word.

Skeptical of Doctor Sleep too, but Gerald's Game was also a pretty weird choice and he did well with that one.

Loved Hush, Oculus and Gerald's Game so I have high hopes for this. Never read the source material so I genuinely have no idea what to expect going in.

So is this a standard multi season show, or is this a limited series which tells a complete story in these 10 episodes?

No love for Penny Dreadful as a great horror series?

I do plan to check this out and it's good to hear all the positive reviews.

Decent first episode, good enough to keep watching, but I do hope it gets better. Lots of reliance on cheap jump-scares so far (Boo! Loud noises!), but at least it's interesting and I do want to know what happens next.
