I am up to chapter 6 in planning for a weird mix of horror/dark fantasy/Souls-like that I'm personally really digging. But I've hit a kinda weird problem where the problem is solved already. I solved the novels central "problem" in chapter 4, so now I'm trying to think of what to do next. There is a place to go, a theoretical end already on the table, but those are long-term and I'm trying to debate between "the problem wasn't actually solved," which feels like the logical progression vs "A lot of people are pissed that you solved the problem actually. They thought they had more time to stop you...." I personally like the later more, but I'm trying to figure out how to actually do that in a way I like.
I ran into that problem a little myself. Mostly I revealed something and I don't really know what to do with that something now lol. Oh well, I will eventually figure it out. The way I'm handling it right now isn't great but, editing can fix that.

When I've had that problem in the past it's because the conflict wasn't strong enough to support a full novel. Once it's reworked you end up with a stronger novel because you end up with something exciting happening at the beginning of the book that keeps going from there.

Based on where I am in my current WIP, I will not have time to plan a new work, so for Nano I'm doing the second draft of last year's Nano novel. I'll still need to plan that draft, but it's not as intense because I already know the characters and the plot work is just fixing problems.

Going to try again this year.

Even though I didn't finish, last year was my best year- I made it half way. Got a lot of material to work with now.

Going to take the rest of this month to set up some outlines so I can focus on writing in November instead of world building.

Good luck to everyone this year!

I sort of want to give it another shot, but...I don't know. I'm just not feeling it. And I've got no ideas. I guess I have three weeks to think on it, but I'm doubting it happens.

I have an idea that I'm really interested in fleshing out, so I think I'll use this month as an excuse to do it! I'd already started planning it, so we'll see what I end up coming up with.

This month I've started working on finishing a short story I left unfinished. I am using it as a sort of training to get back into the habit of writing every single day. During this time I'll also take a closer look at my story and figure out what I need to do next to hit the ground running next month.

I definitely had too much going on in '16 and '17, but maybe I can do it this year. And I've actually had the time to think about a sequel to my last NaNo book so I shouldn't be utterly winging it.

Oh hell, I'm actually beginning to outline! What's next - developing the personalities and backstories of characters before I have story reasons to do so? Giving them names? Figuring out the history of the setting? Last time it was all made up as I went along and that turned out kind of okay-ish, so what am I doing?

I've chickened out of this every year and have since fallen out of writing completely. Gunna use this to get myself back in the game. Nothing like a trial by fire.

I'll have more info on my novel as I work on the remaining outlines but let's just say it's about spies and wizards vs dark wizards and a evil witch...and yes, it's as ridiculous as it sounds!

Man I missed you guys and this thread. I never really think to check out the writing threads but I've been working diligently on my novel all year long and somehow I have only 30k words or so to show for it haha. (T_T)

I'm in this year too, my third Nano.

Also as a heads up, to anyone interested we'll be doing a google writing hangout this Sunday at 4pm Est. It'll be me and Nezumi and anyone else who decides to come and we'll basically be shooting the shit, discussing some our Nanos, and trying to get a bit of pre-planning done for them. It'll be a good, productive time. We've got into in the OP about them but when the time comes, I'll post more details about it. Hope to see people there!

I created my setting this year to help me practice on characterization and creating different fun characters as much as possilble during Nano. During my writing, I faced a lot of difficulty making the different chatacters stand out like giving them a unique voice or mannerisms that fits well with their other traits.

I decided to center the story around a character I created for this purpose, a Messenger who has lived for as long as anyone can remember. He doesn't age, and simply had always delivered parcels, the catch being that the parcels can be delivered at any time, at any place from that moment onward, no matter how long it takes, or to where or to whom (condition apply) for a special price, that being the sender's eternal companionship to the messenger.

The idea being that the messenger will be traveling with different companions who he can summon from different times, each keeping company until their parcels are delivered. Should be fun.

Good use of Nano! I feel like a lot of people really miss out on opportunities to really use Nano to try and practice elements of writing they're a bit weak at. For me, I'm going to try and really focus on my setting, getting it as atmospheric as possible. So much so, I've been trying to include sensory details for each chapter location in my notes.

Not on board yet, but I've at least pared down the possibilities to two stories I've had rolling around in my head. Will have to do a bit of research first on commercial stuff, though. One gets the impression that horror is still not a particularly popular market these days. What genre is everyone else going for?

hey, falling on your face is better than falling on your butt.
it means you are falling forward. Which who knows... might just end up getting you the last little bit you need to cross the finish line :P

True! If I can even write the skeleton of the plot that'll be something. It'll depend on how the October plotting goes, but I'll try and take your good words to heart. Cheers for them~

I did a story one year that needed a lot of research and fact checking which took a lot of time away from actual plotting and writing, not ideal for nano so I'm staying away from that now.

I'm doing fantasy, so if I'm not sure I can just make shit up, much more conducive for nano purposes!

Who says horror isn't popular? It's one of my favourite genres! Scare the bejeezus out of people, hell yeah!

You can do it H.Pro!!

It's that time again.

Last year was pretty rough but I got some stuff I really liked out of it in the end. Hopefully things go a bit smoother this time!

been working on detailing my characters, motivations, some backstories, and their relationships, instead of totally winging it. Got criticism on one of my past stories (among all the positive comments and tons of readers), that I had characters personality change too drastically,..

So in my transition from handwritten notes to electronic, it's been ridiculous how much easier it's been to rearrange details and go back to my notes to adjust continuity details. Also i've been doing Souls-like item descriptions and it's been a ridiculously fun to build the world in my head and also practice being really fucking vague all the time.

Also is anyone else planning on making book covers? I want to know who my gimp/photoshop buddies are.

Electronic notes are definitely the way forward, I have a few different word docs that I add things to and play around with.

As for cover, I'm no artist but I've been doing inktober as a way to get me in the habit of doing something daily and work on discipline, and I've been really enjoying it so I might give a cover a go if I hit a block and need a distraction.

I can never get into digital notes. I love having a sketchbook where I can scribble down ideas, doodle and scratch things off. I also love seeing them fill up slowly overtime. Plus I usually have a title for each page and one of my hobbies is always writing that title in a special way or putting it in the middle of a little relevant drawing.

That being said, I did lose my first notebook last year in July. It was full of 4 years worth of notes and just like that it was gone that night. Luckily I did have a scan of the whole thing but I was still heartbroken for a while afterwards.

I'm in again this year. I won last year, and I'm breaking tradition as rather than starting a new project, I'll be finishing the latter half of the novel I started working on last year. I think it's got a lot of legs and I've got two great critique partners - I just need to finish the damn thing!

I use both physical and digital for notes. I usually write a lot of stuff in a word doc when I'm brainstorming, but I will write in comments on the story document itself. I started doing this because I have to do it for editing at work, and found it to be helpful. I also will have a journal for writing ideas and even continuing a story for when I'm away from the computer or on commute. I used this method yesterday when I had to take a 3-hour train ride. I transferred the story to my e-reader as a pdf file so I could check it, and then continued writing via the journal.

Hey there prepers, in half an hour (4pm Est) we'll have a writing hangout over google hangouts where we can all get some planning done (or work on any other project you may be up to). The format is ten minutes of chat, then thirty minutes of planning with mics muted, repeated until we've gone for two hours. Webcams aren't required, though several of us will have them. Mics are recommended but also not required, as you can use the text chat. I'll post a link to it below when the time comes. Hope to see you there!

I wasn't able to reach the target last year but I think I should be able to this year. Just need to figure out an idea and start planning.

This is the perfect time to start thinking about it! Or you could also do the bold strategy of just coming up with something on the fly three hours from November 1st.

I've actually been thinking about writing a novel, so i'm down

Like a novel in general or did you have a specific idea you've been mulling over?
