Far too many people ignore classic Who
I was only ranking new Who, although none of the classic Who I've seen would make it in my top 10 anyway. I do love how Steven Moffat incorporated classic Who though, something I doubt Chris Chibnall will do. The Series 9 opening was a fantastic continuation from Genesis of the Daleks.

Yes, they were traditionally called "historicals" and were more common in the First and Second Doctor eras. I believe there hasn't been one since the episode Black Orchid in 1982.

Edit: Whoops, didn't read the "new" part, but yes, there hasn't been a straight historical in New Who.
Ah, I've seen that one! My Classic Who viewing history is kind of patchy, so I looked it up. I knew that the historicals dropped off significantly but I was still kind of shocked to hear that was the most recent one; and that the one before that was from the Troughton era!

Even if we don't get another pure historical, I agree with Slime and Carn that it would be a nice change to have a historical story that's at least light on the sci-fi. Come to think of it, this might be confirmation bias but New Who has had a fair few sci-fi or modern eps that were light on the sci-fi, whereas the historicals get a lot of Victorian Shaolin monks and werewolves and spider cyber mechs etc...

If I ever sat down and did my own top 10 list I can honestly only think of 2 or 3 classic Who episodes of the top of my head that would make it for me, Tomb of the Cybermen & Greatest Show in the Galaxy and maybe The Ark in Space (I'd need to rewatch that one as its been awhile though).

In no order for me, the top 10 would be

The Doctors Wife (most likely my fav episode)
Heaven Sent
Vincent & the Doctor
The Eleventh Hour
The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances
The Girl in the Fireplace
Amy's Choice
Twice Upon a Time
Tomb of the Cybermen
The Greatest Show in the Galaxy

The historicals were part of the BBC's original mandate that the show had to educate as well as entertain, but got dropped after the first few seasons because they invariably had much lower ratings than any of the stories with monsters in. Black Orchid was a bit of an anomaly - half the length of most standard serials.

Anyway, I'd put a few classic Who in my top ten (also no particular order):

Blink
Midnight
The God Complex
Pyramids of Mars
City of Death
Rememberance of the Daleks
Spearhead from Space
The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances
An Unearthly Child
The War Games

B. Spaceman

New and old combined (although I have not seen that much Classic Who):

The Caves of Androzani
Remembrance of the Daleks
Pyramids of Mars
The Robots of Death
The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances
The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit
Silence in the Library/The Forest of the Dead
Amy's Choice
Flatline
World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls

Although this is a series 10 thread, just announced:

DpIhqScXcAALJ60.jpg

Three new audio adventures with Tennant & Tate, but they're also bringing back Bernard Cribbins as Wilf and Jacqueline King as Sylvia! Yesss. Surprised they're not completing the set though - three with Rose, three with Donna... you would've thought three with Martha would be next. Alas.

The stories:

This is the weird thing about Doctor Who. Even when it's all new and shiny and exciting, the old stuff is still going on. With the original cast! Amazing.

I get chills seeing this.

Never really been interested in Dr who enough to start watching but I'd really like to watch this season. Should I watch some or all of the previous season for continuity reasons for this season?

Ah ok. Do the last few episodes of the last season at least connect to this season though?

Like does the finale for the last season depict the regeneration stuff talked about in the OP?
That's right- the end of last season and last year's Christmas special dove-tail directly into the opening of the new series.

It's not necessary to understand what's happening here, though, and I STRONGLY recommend not jumping into the last few episodes of the last series as someone who doesn't already have a grounding in the series.

My list of faves. I can't do a list of old and new so I split them

Classic:
Caves of Androzani
Remembrance of the Daleks
Talons of Weng Chiang
Spearhead from Space
Logopolis
Robots of Death
Genesis of the Daleks
Web of Fear
Earthshock
The Five Doctors
Tomb of The Cybermen
The Time Meddler
Revelation of the Daleks
The Time Warrior

Nu Who:
Blink
Human Nature/Family of Blood
Dalek
11th Hour
The Lodger
Twice Upon a Time
Dark Water
Last Christmas
Mummy on the Orient Express
Day of the Doctor
Vincent and the Doctor
The Woman Who fell To Earth
The Empty Child/Doctor Dances

for someone who probably puts Tennant as his favourite nu who Doctor, I would have expected more eps in my list but anywho...

I watched The Woman Who Fell to Earth again last night and still like it, though chances are, that episode will be usurped at some point this season

I'd say this is the perfect opportunity for anyone who wants to give Doctor Who a shot, the cleanest of slates with, not only a new Doctor, but also a completely new creative team.

Yeah, don't watch last season's finale. You're not going to have the emotional investment to really care about what happens.

Watch this season and then go back and take your time with previous seasons while you wait for s12

If you want absolutely everything for this Doctor, you could watch the very, very end of the Christmas special that included the regeneration, to show how the Doctor got to the start of this story (and a brief bit of the previous Doctor); that'll fill in the gap immediately prior to this episode starting:

(That link skips to the main event, but you could also choose to watch the whole scene for a little bit of extra scene-setting from the outgoing Doctor)

But that's really not particularly necessary either; this is designed as an entry point, introducing elements to a new audience as and when they're appropriate, and - assuming they pace things right, and they seem to have done okay so far - that should be enough to get you well-versed in Who lore at the necessary rate.

Title and details for episode 3, courtesy of the Radio Times.

Episode 3: Rosa

The Doctor takes her companions on their first journey back in time - to the dangerous, racially segregated world of Alabama in the 1950s. They encounter one of the era's heroes, black civil rights campaigner Rosa Parks, but also discover a plot to change the course of history. Vinette Robinson (Sherlock, The A Word) guest stars in an episode by acclaimed children's author Malorie Blackman.

Wait, did I miss Rosd, Rosc and Rosb?

You don't really need to watch anything prior to this new season, but if you want to see the Doctor's regeneration that leads into this new season it's on YouTube:

If you like the new season, you could always go back and watch the rest of new Who during the wait for the next season :)

So I loooooved the new doctor, but really disliked everything else. I thought the plot was fine (if basic), but the delivery just didn't hit home for me at all. It was boring.

I didn't feel sad when that woman died. :/

Also, maybe it was just my iTunes copy... was their an intro? I kept waiting for it to come up, eager to see what it would be like, but it never did.

Interesting first details on River Song series six (And my word, BF do seem to be churning out River Song content at quite a rate, aren't they?)

After meeting five incarnations of the Doctor and four incarnations of the Doctor's mortal enemy, the Master, while exploring time and space, River continues to travel the cosmos. However, she'll be crashing into the Doctor's timeline during some of the most famous Doctor Who stories of all time!

And the specific example they give:

Big Finish will be confirming more details over the coming weeks, but today we can reveal that in the final story of The Diary of River Song Series Six, River will be travelling back to Victorian London, just before the classic Fourth Doctor story, The Talons of Weng-Chiang.

In The Talents of Greel, by Paul Morris, River will be playing detective, working out what is happening to the performers of London town, and her investigations take her to the Palace Theatre where she'll meet Henry Gordon Jago, played by Christopher Benjamin.

Angus Wright (Kingdom of Heaven, The Iron Lady) plays Magnus Greel (reprising the role from an earlier audio adventure, The Butcher of Brisbane), Nicholas Goh plays Li H'Sen Chang and the villainous ventriloquist's doll, Mr Sin, and Casey the Irishman is played by John Paul Connolly.

David Richardson, producer, tells us more: "Working in the wonderful world of The Talons of Weng-Chiang is not unusual for me having produced so many spin-off audio adventures for Jago and Litefoot. Here we are back at the Palace Theatre, in those last days before Jago met Litefoot, when the maniac Magnus Greel is skulking below in his secret laboratory, and his servant Li H'Sen Chang is performing on stage and doing his master's bidding.

"We've worked hard to authentically recreate the story – think of this as episode zero of The Talons of Weng-Chiang; our guest cast all watched the original before coming to the studio. Needless to say Angus Wright, Nicholas Goh and John Paul Connolly make a fantastic Greel, Chang and Casey!"

So... Jago and Song, anyone?

I feel this. The new tone feels weird considering how dark and bleak it is, but pretty much everything about Thirteen is great. I like her, I just hope the show doesn't always feel like Torchwood.

The Girl in the Fireplace will always be my favorite episode.
This is the best episode, at least in all of modern Dr. Who. It's got everything: spaceships, Moffat-styled timey-wimey shenanigans, historical figures, multiple companions, somebody dies and the Doctor is really sad about it, and not part of a larger arc.

Ten Best episodes (modern Who only, unranked):

The Girl in the Fireplace
Human Nature/The Family of Blood
Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead
The Fires of Pompeii
The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit
Mummy on the Orient Express
Dark Water/Death in Heaven
Dalek
The End of Time I/II
Face the Raven/Heaven Sent/Hell Bent (the 3rd part is super weak, which is a trend)

Other Episodes that Almost Made it:
Father's Day
The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances
Army of Ghosts/Doomsday
Uptopia/The Sound of Drums/Last of the Time Lords (weak 3rd part)
Planet of the Ood
Midnight
Turn Left/The Stolen Earth/Journey's End (actually nails the 3rd part for the most part)
The Waters of Mars
Vincent and the Doctor
The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People
The Girl Who Waited
The Day of the Doctor
Listen
Extremis/The Pyramid at the End of the World/The Lie of the Land (weak 3rd part)

Yeah, I'm a bit worried about that. I don't mind my Who getting bleak once in a while, but I wouldn't want the entire series to feel that way. Right now I'm assuming it'll change, but it's not like we have a lot to go on thanks to all the secrecy. And on the other hand it'd be reasonable to assume the first episode is supposed to set the tone when it comes to the rest of the series, if not the entire Chibnall era.

Yeah, they're going to have to tread very carefully. I suspect that casting point is intended as a signal of the intent to do things more respectfully, but we'll have to see how well they pull it off.

At least the news story didn't come out with an op-ed about how Talons definitely isn't racist and anyone who thinks it is needs to "understand the times" or whatever.

Still, not the best choice of stories to use.

It's especially odd considering a lot of people complained that Capaldi's era was too dark and too mean even despite how Moffatey it was.

Chibs on the other hand seems to be going just as dark but without as much schlock, which is an...odd choice?

I wouldn't call it bleak so much as slightly unsettling, a lot like Tom Baker's gothic horror era or the early Hartnell serials.

Tim Shaw just murdering random people who aren't even fighting back felt...pointless and kind of out of line with his stated goals. He's a hunter, so why is he killing people that aren't his target AND aren't a threat to him?

A real hunter wouldn't be shooting rabbits if he's out there for buck antlers or bear skins.

For better and for worse, all the monster stuff felt a bit like Series 1/2 Torchwood. Which, of course, Chibs was lead writer on.

And slower paced. Back in Series 8 Moffat and Jenna Coleman were making a point about how much slower paced Capaldi's series would be but now they feel really fast paced in comparison to the new episode/series.

If the rest of the series is as dull as the first episode this is the first series I'll be skipping.

Yep. Exactly my thought. I'm not sure I hate it, but it's not really what I expected out of a reimagining of the show and I'm not sure how long it'll hold my attention.

Hopefully Chibs has some variety planned.

Interesting that Big Finish have steered well away from River meeting the Third and Second Doctors, despite having dedicated soundalikes. I wouldn't be surprised if Series 7 was based around David Bradley's First Doctor.

If memory serves, River has met 2 already and doesn't particularly care for that incarnation. I forget where I heard that though.

Yeah, that's correct, Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock for PS3, Vita and PC is where that's from apparently. But complicating matters that says the missing Third Doctor is one of her favourites!

See, I agree the tone was off, but I almost feel like it wasn't serious enough?

Not saying I want Doctor Who to become dark and gritty—very much the opposite—but that guy saying "I feel special" got old after five seconds and subsequently removed all the tension from his scenes.
