Sure it is. They had a city environment that they would carve into various tracks. There were game modes in PGR4 that were in the open city without any tracks defined.

In PGR3, you could even make user tracks in the open city environment by setting up walls and corners to take.

Yup, last good one they made.
Huh. I always meant to play it but it never seemed to go for very cheap. Looks like it's cheap on PC now, though!

PGR3 is completely different in terms of track layouts etc., but that's not open world either. When you choose the track from a menu and then race in it, it's not open world.

From what I can tell, PGR4 only had a "free roam" mode and cat-and-mouse that were multiplayer-only. That doesn't make it an open-world racing game in the slightest.

(It's actually news to me, I had no idea they existed. Not that it makes any difference now, seeing as it'd be impossible to play them at all)

Details on PGR4's open city game mode from Wikipedia:

Project Gotham Racing 4 introduced a new online game mode, called "Bulldog". One player starts out as the Bulldog, whose job is to tag every other opponent in the game, thus creating new bulldogs as they go. This mode is played in an open section of a city, allowing the players to turn on to any street they want. Both cars and bikes are allowed to play in this mode simultaneously.

Even more than arcade racers, I want just *driving* games, like Smuggler's Run or even (ugh) Driver. If you remade Stuntman - minus the game killing load times - I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

If you didn't buy OnRush you are a monster.

I was going to give it a shot, but I read it wasn't a racing game, which is really confusing because it looks like one.

It's a competitive Driving game.

I think Onrush is great but yeah, with 4 game modes, I definitely think a 5th that is pure racing would work. Something like: whichever team scores the most points after 3 laps, points awarded after every lap, catch-ups disabled.

OnRush is far better by ignoring racing. It's too bad so many people were so up their butts about that. People who, meanwhile, gobble up scripted stunt events in Forza Horizon and spend all their time in Burnout Paradise smashing billboards and doing takedowns in those "proper racing games"...

What I'm saying, though, is that when you're actually racing in Forza, there's a defined track in the open world, like PGR.

It isn't like Burnout Paradise, where you just have to get to a particular location and you can go anywhere to get there. That was frustrating because you had to memorize the city.

There are (some) defined tracks in an open world in Horizon, but in PGR4 it's all defined tracks on a map (and other games like NFS:HP (2010)). A map you can't drive around in whenever you want.

If you can't tell the difference between an open-world racer like FH and a game like PGR4, I don't know what to tell you.

Welp current list of this gen:

Redout (like F-Zero/WipeOut)
Distance
TrailBlazers
All Star Fruit Racing
Xenon Racer (deliciousness, love the varied track maps)
Dangerous Driving (Burnout 3 creators!!!!!)

One's I begrudgingly acknowledge:

Grip
OnRush
WreckFest
Burnout Paradise: Remastered
Trackmania Turbo
Sonic TeamRacing
FlatOut 4

What happened to the Road Rash remake (or it was something like an homage to Road Rash?)

Personally I don't think arcade racing is going anywhere. It's the genre I love the most.

You can follow our progress on Dangerous Driving by signing up to our newsletter at www.threefieldsentertainment.com or following us on Facebook or Twitter.

As we're the developer and the publisher there's no one preventing us from taking shots and sharing them with you as we make the game. And we're making behind the scenes videos as we go along.

We also have a subreddit for our game which can be found at www.reddit.com/r/dangerousdriving

Folks in Spain will be getting the chance to see the game running at the Madrid Games Festival next week.

Hard at work atm and having lots of fun making and driving all the new tracks. We're just tweaking how much Boost you earn for different things and getting Takedowns working nicely today.

The similarities between these stop at floating cars. Which one does it play like?

It's closer to Wipeout but with a slightly different driving model. Instead of airbrakes you can use the right stick to strafe your ship left and right and it's basically mandatory in tight bends. Also, you have to move the nose of your ship up and down to avoid grinding on the track in loops and after jumps. It takes a little practice to get used to it but it works.

Thank you for making this game. The last great Burnout game (in my opinion) was the NFS Hot Pursuit you guys did at Criterion. And good to see a "Shiny Red Car"!!

Plan on buying it day one Alex!

Is it going to be 60fps on the X and Pro?

Hot Pursuit 2010 was amazing. Still holding out some shred of hope that it will one day become backwards compatible on the XB1.

Thanks Oneself! You are indeed correct. The car in that shot IS Red and yes, it is Shiny.

Regarding your kind comment about NFS HP - I guess from my POV that development could never be anything other than NFS as it had on-board weaponry.
That said, we're currently undecided about whether the Police make an appearance in Dangerous Driving....2002 was a long long time ago now.

Didn't know about this game before this thread.

Looking forward to it!

Thanks ahoyhoy (whilst I'd love that to be a Danny Baker reference, I must also accept that it probably isn't!)

That was why I posted it!

If someone could explain to me how to quickly post pics on Resetera then I'll try and do some more. Been meaning to get around to it in ages.

Hey Alex. Appreciate all the work from you and your team over the years. I received 2 racing with my ps2 in 06':

Gran Turismo 4
Burnout 3: Takedown

You can guess which I had a blast playing?
Add me for +1 sale day one when Dangerous Driving releases. You guys hands down have the best drift mechanics I've ever played. I couldn't find a single ps3/4 title to match your level, so keep up the good work!

I'm looking forward to Grip, Road Redemption and Wreckfest myself. Really wish someone would make a sequel to Split Second, whether it be a spiritual successor or full-on sequel. That game was simply awesome. Sim racers bore me to death. Need my over-the-top psychotic arcade racers.

@ Firefoxprime Yes, I was a big GT 4 fan as well. Although GT3 A-Spec was really the one for me.

For a long time I carried two copies of my save games with me at all times on two PS2 Memory Cards.

Looking back, even I do not know why.

I still remember this moment like it was yesterday. It's the moment my dreams came true:

(I can upload the full 3-page scan if anyone wants)

Alex, were you able to reuse any previously developed technology from those games you've worked on way back when, or did you have to build everything from the ground up for DD?

Well, good job with what you did back then, it was the best NFS game in my opinion since the original 3 and HP on PS2. And it scratched my Burnout itch for sure! That being said, if you guys hesitate about including Police chases in your new game, maybe add it as a different mode... A Hot Pursuit mode because Burnout 3 arguably is the best blueprint you can follow to reach most of your fans!

I was making a "Burnout 2:Point of Impact" reference there. Failed spectacularly. Another thing for me to fail hard at!

slinch - I left my old job at Criterion Games five years ago now. What I do now is not connected to anything I did in the past. The technology today is far superior than anything we made.

Break out the old OPM2 scan though - I don't have that anymore. But then YOU do?

That said, if you're a discerning player of arcade racers, then you might get a kick of out stuff like Danger Zone and Dangerous Driving. But you don't seem to like those? Because it's 'shovelware' to you? You must have some expensive shovels.

As you've already said yourself, you think our game looks really bad and will be terrible?

I do hope it makes you feel better though.

And if you're a true gaming deviant, then you probably like Dangerous Golf as well.

Will someone please break out the 4K version of that on Xbox One X eh?

(hang on, that would be down to us...)

Yes, I do feel a sense of embarrassment for those words now, as you might imagine :) Though the footage really did not look encouraging to me, and I even popped in the first Burnout game for a quick idea on what exactly felt out of place. I was only referring to DD, but the words do feel exaggerated when I read them back. Granted, I really should have given kudos to you guys for deciding to share WIP content, since it opens you up to exactly that kind of feedback, especially if you feel it is not deserved. That's also why I asked about the tech, something about the way these DD cars come out of the drift just doesn't click with me, and I really hope that by the time the game comes out, it will.

Yeah, I didn't keep a lot from back then, but I did keep the essentials. Here's the full read: https://imgur.com/a/ur5vbB9 (there's also a pic of a slightly younger you in there :) )
These mags aren't only good for strolling down memory lane, I can also wrap up my stuff in them when I move, to keep stuff like this safe:

bhwzfu7.jpg

I'm positive I also kept the one with the now legendary line "The Shiny Red Car crashed and burned... into Burnout", but cannot find it right now.

Edit: found it. Turns out it's just a tiny blurb, but I remember it as if it was a billboard plastered across the street from my window: https://imgur.com/a/6Q8c1oW

The difference being that those games have racing and the other stuff; it's not so much a matter of "proper" as it is just the presence of the thing many players like. Timeline is probably the closest thing to traditional racing right now in OnRush, and I know it's my favorite mode as a result. Insisting that adding in their take on some sort of race mode would compromise the game, especially in the context of the dev working to keep the community healthy/engaged? It comes across as self-defeating. The market that exists out there would enjoy it.

Burnout 2 is my favorite Burnout. I know the series evolved with takedowns, aftertouch, traffic checking and open world, but nothing will ever beat the zen like purity of focus of B2. The adrenaline rushing into my veins as I dodge traffic while boosting nonstop, then being rewarded with a satisfying high pitched turbo sound at the end of it letting me know it's time to do it all over again. The obessive addiction of chaining burnout after burnout into double digits around a curvaceously tight airport/alpine course. The encouragement of scrappy garage rock kicking into high gear, a protracted anthem to my speed. The disappointment of breaking the chain alleviated by the primal spectacle of a bone crunching crash.

To me that is the apex of Burnout, one that none of the games that followed ever hit again, despite their additions.

That said, it makes me giddy that the behind the scene vid on your dev subreddit shows me Dangerous Driving looks and handles so very much like the old Burnout. From the way the cars twitch yet hug the road to the snowy mountain bends, the vibes are familiar and comforting. I don't know your position back at Criterion but it's clear you know Burnout at its best. Thanks for making a true successor!

bulletyen - that's OK. I'm not sure I knew my position at Criterion either :-)

There's probably more of the second game in Dangerous Driving that any other game that has come out since then I think.

A few weeks ago I performed the first x8 Boost Chain on one of the courses I'd been working on. Felt pretty good to me.

I was thinking about this the other day while playing Wipeout PS4 offline. Has everyone just stopped giving a fuck about these games when they aren't made by nintendo?
