Mad Max has the same cinemascore as Venom, which is a B+

Venom has an higher RT audience rating than Mad Max.

Venom is going to outgross Mad Max

jfc

Haha, listen I loved Mad Max but both movies have a place in the world.

I just saw Venom with my wife tonight and we both really liked it. Cant wait for the sequel.

Venom may outgross Mad Max, but it won't have as many Oscars nor the same reception over time that it will. Time is only going to be kind to Fury Road.

Critics job should be to realize and look beyond their thick head that just because film quality isn't good enough for them, it will appeal to a larger audience.

It's like they are out of touch with general audiences at times, it's mind boggling.
??? Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War both have solid ratings.

A decent amount of negative reviews are saying that the movie is objectively 'bad' but an entertaining time.

I think the whole 'critics are getting owned' thing has to a lot to do with the binary RT scoring setup taking Center stage.

what is the budget of Venom plus marketing

Budget was 100 million USD (Only 2/3 of that came from Sony themselves though, the rest was paid by Tencent Pictures, the guys responsible for its Chinese distribution.)

Marketing is off course impossible to tell, but Deadline has estimated that it needs to hit 450 million or so in order to break even.

Being serious I feel bad for anyone who hates Capeshit. Not only are there 500 released a year they all make money and never seem to go away.

Fucking Sony is gonna triple down on this shit.

Gaga fans managed to fool box office thread into thinking A Star is Born gonna break records and beat Venom.

Let's see how many of the 500 we have this year...
Black Panther, Infinity War, Deadpool 2, Ant Man 2, Venom, Spider-Verse.
I am coming up close to 500 shy.
That's like one every other month. They don't release that many. It is just all many talk about. There are literally hundreds of non cape films released a year. Dozens per month.

EDIT: My bad. Forgot Incredibles 2 and Aquaman. So still less than 10 in a year.

Fury Road? Yeah, I think it's pretty boring overall.

Maybe boring is too strong of a word. Uninteresting? I think that's better. Definitely liked Venom over it.
That statement combined with the suicide squad Avi tells me you have no appreciation for good cinematography, writing, editing or competent directing in a movie.

Really surprised at Eras reception of Venom. This thing got a B+ cinemscore . That's pretty shitty for cinemascore .

probably will fall a lot this weekend . 65%+

Era's reception was extremely negative before the movie came out. So going from trashing the movie at every opportunity to it is not all that bad is actually a huge improvement

Venom is an awful movie that only shines briefly due to Hardy's will. He tries to make it a fun movie but it can't help but get lost in generic sci-fi/superhero shenanigans for the grand majority of its runtime.

I feel very conflicted.

Part of me that always loved Venom is happy becuase it proves what we all know, people love the character even if some hardcore fans like to shit on him. Its Venom, he's fucking cool.

Then theres the side of me that knows this film is garbage, it has nothing to do with Spider-Man and never will and that its continued success would ultimately lead to terrible sequels just like that.

Ultimately I'm hoping for a Ghost Rider 2 situation. It somehow is going to hit the jackpot for the first one but hopefully the reception and general perception ends up putting an end to it when it comes back the second time around and the character goes back into hibernation, hopefully resurfacing in ten years or so with someone producing that isn't reeking of cinematic universe desperation and flying blind at the wheel like Sony.

Both Mad Max and Suicide Squad will be looked at as examples of great makeup design. They're pioneers.

I don't think anyone here was fooled about that? Or was I mistaken and missed those posts last week.

Mother! Got a F and people were wrong about that film too

And Zootopia to be the worst movie ever. You know, the movie that tried to teach "racism is bad" to kids is the worst movie ever.
My least favorite movie ever is Final Destination 4 :)

I just want to clarify in case someone thought your exaggeration was correct, as Bor Gullet is literally correct.

Zootopia is my least favorite movie released in 2016, though. And while I agree that its goals are noble, I think its execution is so bungled that I actively found it offensive. Which doesn't happen often, but alas. I liked Moana, though!

I, 100% agree with you. Could never understand the hype that the old site and here have when it comes to that movie.
Fury Road is about as perfect an action movie as action movies can be. The action in it is insane (especially knowing that so much of it is real stunts and not 99,999% CGI), it has fun and well developed characters who go through compelling arcs of their own, the acting is at the very least adequate with some standout performances, the movie looks and sounds amazing and the overall story is quite simple and straightforward yet nicely layered/thoughtful at the same time in a way turds in the wind like Venom could only dream of being. And even though it's high octane action from beginning to end, the movie never loses itself or its characters in all the action. It's just thrilling from beginning to end with just enough room to breathe between action set pieces that it doesn't get exhausting.

If there's one thing you could argue is a bit below the rest of the movie's quality, it's the villain. He's fun and there's a legitimate reason for the good guys to oppose him but ultimately he's a pretty simple character. It's more about fighting against what he represents rather than him being all that deep as a character of his own.

I'll add to this that the movie has multiple, rich veins of subtext suffusing the whole enterprise. It's an action movie that serves as a meaty course for anyone interested in delving into literary studies. We don't have many of those.

So, around 109M going into the weekend. A 60% second weekend drop would give Venom a 141M total as of this coming Sunday. Anyone who was guessing 150Mish or under, that ship has sailed.

A Star is Born should break 90M this coming weekend, unless I am misjudging its legs. Anything under a 40% drop would get it to 90M.

Would a 60% drop still keep it in sub $200M territory?
