Hello everyone,

I know there is a thread dedicated to Microsoft Studios but I feel that Rare deserves its own little hype room because there is a lot to discuss and fun conversations to be had. With that being said, please don't come here being a negative Nancy or do drive by shit posting of how X studio ruined Y studio. We're past that and have to look into the future. Thanks. So let's begin.

As we all know we are on the verge of new consoles being announced here in a few months or so. With XO coming up and Sea of Thieves being released for almost 7 months what are you all expecting to see from Rare in the not so distant future?

Killer Instincts already happend although was done by a different studio it was quite successful.

Sea of Thieves recieved mixed reviews but was a commercial success as for me personally it's one of my top games of this generation thanks to the new updates, amazing social interaction and a great world and interesting ideas and unique game mechanics despite the lack of content or progression and grinding at launch.

The Battletoads pipe dream gods have answered our prayers at E3 2018 confernece. It was an absolute joy to see that announcement for me in person..

So what's left?

- Kameo
- Conker
- Perfect Dark
- Viva Pinata
- Banjo
- Jet Force Gemini

The reality is that Microsoft has been sitting on a pile of a goldmine of amazing IPs. And it's quite obvious that they're interested in investing more heavily in their 1st party portfolio due to recent studio acquisitions.

However, the most studio that interests me is Rare. I am really curios too see what they do next and how big of a project is Battletoads.

Right now I am treating it as a side project along side their another new IP that's in development at least that's what I been hearing and reading in a few places.

A good Chunk of people are working on Sea of Thieves content I am also interested in seeing how that game transitions into the next Xbox when it launches. Obviously the next Xbox will be BC with everything, I think Microsoft already proven that point. Hoping to see higher visual fidelity with that game and better framerate running on the new system.

As for Perfect Dark there is a rumor that the game is being worked on with Sumo Digital and The Coalition. Although I am really wondering why not Rare themselves assuming that this is true.

Anyways, what are you opinions and hopes for the future of Rare going into next gen?

I just want more SoT content right now anyway.

I feel that a new narrative heavy Perfect Dark is exactly what Xbox is going for. Either that or a new IP. I don't think Banjo or Conker holds up as well as people remember.

A new Viva Pinata in the GaaS age could be something special.

The original VP & TiP are 2 of my favourite 360 games would love for them to get X Enhancements as well as a follow up!

I would commit unspeakable acts for a great new Kameo or Viva Pinata game, to be quite honest...

I dont really think theyll revisit old IPs, at least not the rare studio itself, other studios will work on them.
Maybe.

I swear, if I see just one post about how "all the good people are working at X company"... Not also is it factually incorrect, it's also incredibly demeaning to the new people who are working there.

Anyway.. here are my expectations:
-Rare: Sea of Thieves expansions for two or three years
-Rare 2: New IP released in 2021 or 2022
-Another retro revival by a partner studio. Likely Perfect Dark or Banjo-Kazooie
-Killer Instinct 4

Here are my hopes:
-Single player story expansion for Sea of Thieves
-Banjo-Kazooie collaboration between Rare and Playtonic
-An expansion to Rare Replay adding in the handheld games

Sea of Thieves isn't for me but I'm really glad it exists. I think Rares next game is going to be something that no one will guess basically

Rare have stated that they don't want to make sequels, unless it is something new or unique. Look for any Rare's past catalog to come from a third party. Battletoads is a good example of this, KI another. Rare will be making new IPs moving forward, and working with third parties to provide guidance on anything from the past.

They are working on a New IP and the studio itself has expanded. So hoping for something good, Sea Of Thieves was a step in the right direction but the next game needs to be better.

Someone. Anyone, please, make an Odyssey-like Banjo Kazooie, or at least make a New Super Banjo Kazooie U. Nintendo has had their platforming mascots in both 2D and 3D, so there's no reason MS can't start doing the same (with the exception that there's almost no way it'll be as good of a game, but I can hope).

Reboot Perfect Dark into a Sci-Fi Spy Thriller plz. Open world.

Edit:
Reason for saying that over a new FPS is because it won't be Halo in sales and that might turn MS off from funding sequels.
So go smaller in budget but make game in a genre that they don't actively have a game in.

Kameo had so much potential. I really want to them to find someone to make that project.

About Rare, perhaps they will try to grow to multiple teams and have some of those teams working on old IPs at some point?

I understand wanting to do new stuff when you can only produce 1-2 games at once, but perhaps if they can hold 5 projects they could make room for their old ventures.

While I am well aware that Rare is a new IP factory.. What's with all of a sudden out of nowhere revival of Battletoads then? Real life RNGesus lottery win?
It's not being developed by them, though they are likely overseeing/helping.

Well whatever Louise O'Connors team is working on, most likely a new IP but I doubt it's ready for the launch of scarlet. When we look at how long SOT was in dev, though SOT didn't have a couple of years of pre-pro. I expect we will see it unveiled as an in engine concept demo, just like SOT at the Scarlet unveil. Probably a 2022 release, I also expect Rare to port SOT development over to Scarlett with a nice graphical bump as well. Rare is only overseeing Battletoads (Gregg Mayles), but I do expect Rare's publishing team to look for more partners to resurrect old IP for Scarletts launch and after. Rare new IP focused, third party partners old IP exclusively.

I think they'll revive a legacy IP for X2.

Microsoft's studio acquisitions will pump out SP stuff, but it'll be all (or mostly) new IP, which is great and all, but isn't going to cause the same sort of fuss Sony can with 'Spider Man 2' or a new 'God of War'. Stick Rare on something with name recognition Banjo or Conker to bolster that launch window line-up.

I don't think they want to touch old IPs for a number of reasons. I still believe that attitude is partially due to people shitting on N&B.

Well Rare's not developing it, Rare found a partner that pitched them an idea for a new Battletoads. Matt Booty has confirmed that each studio is looking to have multiple projects in dev like Coalition and Rare or 343 previously, Coalition obviously finds partners for Gears games, 343 for Halo games and for Rare that would obviously be their catalog of old IP.

Still doesn't really answer the question though if I am being honest.

That's not what I was asking lol. If Rare is strictly a new IP. Factory then why revive Battletoads is my point.
Dlala Studios are the ones developing the new Battletoads, so I don't think Rare is involved in this outside it being their IP.

I think Rare is going to be focused on multi-player experiences going forward. That's ultimately where the studio's expertise is following SoT.

I think the success of Killer Instinct proves that their older IPs have some weight to them that can bring them a lot of positive attention. I think they should keep pursuing working with other developers to make new games based off of their older IPs. I think it also helps that a lot of these franchises don't really NEED a AAA budget to make a good game or give fans what they want.

As for Rare themselves, I don't know. They should definitely keep adding onto Sea of Thieves, as the concept is perfect for new ideas and improvements. I think they run the risk of the game falling into irrelevancy if they don't fix a lot of the issues or add significant updates within that year one window.

If there are other teams in Rare that are working on other projects separate from SoT, I think it would be smart to avoid making more games-as-a-service games (or at least avoid making more like SoT). Rare has always had world-building as one of their biggest strengths, and it would be nice to experience that in a single-player setting.

With Spyro and Crash remasters selling way over expectations (well, at least Crash did), I'm pretty sure that a proper Banjo remake or a Banjo 3 would reach a wide audience these days.
The gaming market is diverse enough to support mascots besides Nintendo again.

I'd love to see them revisit old IPs again or at least let other studios work on them.
But I also love Sea of Thieves and am happy that they managed to successfully launch a new IP that is not casually oriented, so more new IPs would also be nice!

I mean more Sea of Thieves is what's to come. The game is still in its infancy. They need to focus on that.

I'd say just let them continue to make new stuff. If some third party studio has a good idea for one of their IPs then they can oversee it like they did with KI and are doing with Battletoads.

For now I want them to continue to put out Sea of Thieves updates. The game gets better by the week.

I would love to see a single player (coop) paid expansion with Sea of Thieves assets. Something within an indie level with a light story and inmersive gameplay. With that art direction, the game would benefit a lot from having a main character to base the marketing on. Also, some world building would be great, I guess you can make an interesting lore with the pirates setting.

Collaborations between studios. Rare did the same thing with KI when it was being made.

It's been a long time coming, and Dlala came to Rare and pitched it. Craig Duncan was so impressed (with the studio and CEO's passion), he greenlit it.

But yeah, they'll continue to make new IPs. I'm just really wondering what their next one is and what it is like. I'm thinking it will be more SP focused and less GaaS because Sea of Thieves already does that for them, and they can't leave people behind on every project to make it GaaS.

I would love to see a new Jet Force Gemini. Vast, expansive levels through ships and bases, and the ability to pilot your own craft in-between levels. Expanded use of abilities and weapons, there are so many different things that you could do with a modern take on JFG.

I have been praying for a new Viva Pinata for years but Phil Spencer mentioned this year there's no VP in the pipeline and that it was ahead of its time. The fact that he he talked about it was nice though, it isn't talked about enough.

You and me both buddy. Viva Pinata was an amazing surprise for 360s days. I loved both games. Relaxing, addicting and unique.

I still have my PC physical copy, they were on sale once for 2 bucks somewhere and I bought 4 copies to give to family and friends. It's a bit hard to get running though, aspect ratio's GFWL.

Are we "past that"????? Since when are we "past that"???

https://www.metacritic.com/company/rare-ltd

Yep Rare still in utter ruins. We're not past that at all. The talent left and we have no indication whatsoever that any talent has been brought in. Sea of Thieves is a 69 meta and 50 user score. The 1 good release of the past decade was the Replay, a disc full of great games nobody there ever worked on.
