I was wondering when someone was going to create a thread for this.

Is a great game that mixes beat 'em ups, puzzle games and... cooking? Pretty solidly. It also has quite a appealing artstyle that makes me wish it had more characters to appreciate more of it.

The game can get a bit repetitive halfway though but is great without a doubt.

Quoting myself from the other thread I necro'd with no success :P

I've played some of the prologue stuff, I've only done the one practice duel so far and a couple side jobs. The game seems good, the battle controls aren't as tight as I'd like but it seems like something that will be more than the sum of its parts. The puzzle aspect is quite tricky and in depth with the task at hand requiring different matching. I like it so far.

Isn't there an anime with a similar but even more over the top comedic premise? Or at least a Japanese game, probably a JRPG? I seem to recall something like that for the Nintendo DS or similar, at least I think it was on a Nintendo system, I recall wanting to try it but never getting to do so. Edit: found it, it's Toriko manga/anime/movies/whatever and there are several games with the IP. The latest is Toriko: Ultimate Survival for the 3DS.

Now I want to play it again :P they don't seem to have been localized.

Thanks a lot for the OT! I almost ended up making one myself last night, haha.

I've had a wonderful time with this game, the Switch version is pretty much flawless so far, and I've been playing mostly on handheld mode.

I made a silly mistake though... When you're choosing a difficulty setting when creating a new save file, Hard mode says "Hunts are timed". I interpeted that as all competitions are timed, so I assumed they weren't on normal, so I went for hard... It was doable for the most part, but I made it to the end of the tournament and the difficulty spike was insane, I gave up, then watched some video of that same match on normal and noticed the match was timed too, that's when I realized they meant Thorn's hunts specifically lmao, I don't know why something optional like those would be the only significant change aside from actual difficulty but yeah lol.

I started a new file on normal last night and I've finally made it to the point I was on Hard. Everything is so much simpler now, I'm constantly winning every match first try with like 200 points of advantage, and I'm TERRIBLE at the puzzle segments, haha.

Thanks for the OT. I really think this game is one of 2017 indie gems.

Here's my impression from the eshop topic.

The game for now it's pretty solid, only drawback is that the ending could be longer.

The game is bug free and runs super well on the switch on both handheld and docked.
Also it was good to know that it's more focused on the puzzle department than the "golden axe" part, both are done realy well and the puzzle part as a puzzle & dragons vibe since each gem has a attribute and some cooking jurys lean more to a certain attribute than others. Now imagine when you have to do well to more than a judge at a time. Gets pretty hectic sometimes. xD

I also had the fear the game was going to be repetitive but it gradually gets more complex and brings a lot more to the game that the trailers shows us.

Bonus points that if you love those cooking competitions shows, olds shows like Iron chef or the recent anime Shokugeki no Souma you will love the story and vibe from this game. xD

I've definitely enjoyed what I've played so far on Switch in Handheld Mode. I've gotten to Chapter 4 in the game and I have had no technical issues whatsoever with the game running really well. The characters are pretty charming for the most part and the game play is a pretty interesting mix of story, like visual novels and adventure games, puzzles, like match-3 games, and combat, which is a little simplistic feeling at times, but is still enjoyable.

This game has been pretty great so far.

I was expecting a simple cooking theme puzzler, but it actually does a good job emulating those cooking competition shows and I'm surprisingly interested in the characters and story.

I just wish it gave a better idea on what items to invest in.

Looks like it's getting a lot of good impression. Would love to add this in my Switch indie library.

It's a really great game! There's a few reviews out there and almost all of them are pretty positive.

I noticed a small problem on the Switch. After playing it for awhile (7+ hours) without restarting, and going in and out of sleep mode a few times, the loading times got pretty bad. Restarting the game seemed to fix the issue.

A few other Switch games I believe have this issue.

it must be a way the switch deals with the memory. I remember that even on ps4 with bloodborne it would have that issue as well.
Guess in general it's not good to leave the games on for long times.

This games needs more love. What cookware is everyone running? I usually do Combo Pan / a random elemental x2 match one depending on the fight / cutting board. I tried the slow cooker for a while, but I couldn't get into the flow of it.

Outside of gameplay (which is seriously really great and creative, it's impressive how none of the elements feel half baked and everything is well utilized) there's so much I want to gush about in this game. The gorgeous art, the tasteful designs, the variety of body types (there's even a handful fat and/or short characters and none of them is ridiculed for it), the DIVERSITY in races and there's even at least one gay character, the writing, the way it manages to be both funny and have very nice and pleasant characters and still have very real moments and a sense or urgency... This game is a delight.

Oh right, I've been playing for probably more than 20 hours and this same thing only happened to me yesterday, the only time where I left the system suspended for a day with the game running.

It doesn't need to be the memory. It can be a background thread that doesn't terminate when "it should" (since the game is in sleep mode) and starts to run forever in parallel with the game.

Oh and I think BCB is one of the few Switch games that I've noticed keep running in the background when you press home or suspended the system. I lost a few matches due to it, and it may have added lots of extra hours to my game time too.

Is there any way to know in advance (when hunting) what kind of elements (water, earth, etc) a monster will contain?

I find the slow cooker + the ingredients you can start with to be kind of broken. You can fill two rows of earth, chuck in the main ingredient and it's done. Just let it stew for the entire match and you've got a 200-300+ dish by doing basically nothing. It lets you focus on your other dishes.

The points are so high from it, I stopped even caring what element the judge wanted. They get earth because it's the ingredient I picked to start with, and it's an easy two rows. I'll always give it to the earth judge, but if there isn't one, oh well.

Not that I know of, sadly, it's all memorization. Although in most cases, the color, element of its attacks and appearance of the monsters is tied to their drops. For example slimes drop water gems and water sauces and so does that ice turtle thing, just like most fruits and vegetables drop earth ones.

Oh my. That's pretty gross. Not even sure I want to do that so I don't trivialize the difficulty :V

Man, Thrash sucks. He's so slow.

I just beat it a few minutes ago.

As a fan of puzzle games, fantasy and Iron Chef, this game was awesome.

Good
- The theme is ridiculous and yet it works flawlessly. I found myself taking the world and the threats seriously, despite it having basically the same premise of Yu-Gi-Oh where the world's problems are solved with cooking. But it works. The game never points out how silly the concept is, so you just roll with it
- This game was made by fans of Iron Chef. The long winded stories by the chairman on the ingredients, the random C-List celebrity judges, the pomp and flashiness of the whole show is on display. The really captured the feeling of doing an Iron Chef duel.
- The puzzle mode mechanics are very simple, but progress slowly over time into a more and more complicated system.
- The characters are amazing. I felt bad when they felt bad, I felt happy when they felt happy. I really got into these characters and their lives and personalities. I even got attached to a random NPC, who I felt very happy for after he appeared in the background of a certain cutscene, since it meant he achieved his dream.
- The character designs are top notch. All of the different chefs have really unique designs.
- The art style is gorgeous, with hand drawn fluid animation.
- The alchemy puzzles were a fantastic addition, and I spent a good 30 minutes on one of them.
- The music is relaxing and enjoyable.
- Everyone in this game is so nice and friendly. It's chill to just listen to them talk to each other.
- The voice acting is fantastic

Not good
- Magic feels sorta useless. I didn't even realize Thrash had magic until his quest was almost over. I'd just spam daggers and then not really touch magic. You kill enemies quick enough without it.
- The right combination of gear can almost break the game. The Slow Cooker is especially ridiculous in longer matches. The final few matches of the game, it wasn't uncommon for me to serve a maxed out 400 star dish to at least one judge, allowing me to focus on the other judge(s). The orchid item that makes vegetables better, combined with the fire frying pan, with those red berries from the caves, made any cave themed match comically easy. Just drop one of those berries and it's like +50 points. The wrong element? Just go find the treasure with the sauces in it, it's always in the same spot and it's never hard to get to. I only lost 2 matches, the first match of the 3 cook gauntlet, and the final boss.
- Thrash's story breaks the flow, especially since he's so slow, and his quest is super easy. He uses mostly fire, but all the matches have at least one fire judge, so you're never really in any danger of being resource starved. His story is great, but maybe it should have been a post-game extra.
- Poison is pointless. You can just avoid poisoned ingredients, the game never forces you to use them. None of the items that are only poisonous (like mushrooms) ever come up as the theme ingredient.
- The game doesn't tell you (I don't believe?) that bones are not considered bad for the judges. I desperately tried to clear all bones before judging, only to find out, accidentally, that they don't really matter.
- There are chefs you never get to face if you don't pick them to challenge. They just either disappear (like hawk dude) or hang around and you never fought them. There was this guy in a blue coat I never fought as well as hawk guy.
- It just sort of... ends. After Thrash's story wraps up, you're flung into one last cut scene, and then the final boss. Then you beat the game and there's really nothing to do. There's daily matches, but I did one and it was stupidly easy. There's a few hunting and restaurant service challenges as well, but I didn't bother with those. There aren't any puzzle stage challenges, sadly. The last chapter is kind of lame overall.
- I ran into two bugs. One was that the game progressively got slower the longer I left the Switch in sleep mode (and was easily fixed just by restarting the game), and the other is during Thrash's finale, there's a cutscene and a sound effect from it got stuck, and looped endlessly on top of itself, causing a horrible static noise that didn't go away until I beat the round. These aren't huge issues, just noting them.

This game is a must own for Switch players. It is extremely charming, fun, and has an excellent story. I won't know exactly how long it took to beat until my Switch updates with the time in a week, but I'd estimate about 8-10 hours. Maybe more.

On that note, the OP says this
Three playable chefs with their own short campaign which delves into each character's personality and cooking.
From what I've seen, there is only two chefs? Is there a third I need to unlock or something? Just Mina and Thrash as far as I can tell.

switch is excellent but the loading times are a bit weird

only at end of chap 4 i think for mina, having a blast, just taking it a challenge at a time. wish there was ways to fuck around more in the various environments to practice before taking on a challenge, and balancing what is the dominant flavour of a given dish is a bit tricky to do at a glance

wish you could tell what judges were going before you choose your cookware

I keep going back and forth between wether or not I want to buy this or 9 parchments on Switch. I played the Demo for 9 Parchments and really enjoyed it (helps that there aren't many Diablo likes on Switch), but I've always thought battle chef looked really cool.

There seems to be a bug related to sleep mode and load times (see post #17). Have you tried quitting the game and restart?

I just took the fact sheet from the press kit.

AFAIK, in one the KS updates they said that other playable characters would be added post release. Initially they planned for more initally, but it ended up being too much work to get it done in some reasonable time.

This was before they were published by Adult Swim, so those plans my have changed.

While I was looking for impressions on hard mode, I ended up reading the Steam forums and in one of the threads, a spokesperson of the studio commented on how they still have plans to add more content post release. I'll see if I can find it.

Edit: Here
Ziggy and Kirin were in the original Kickstarter pitch a few years ago, but we ended up expanding the story from a bland tournament bracket into the voiced campaign that you see now. We also expanded the combat movesets massively (in the original design they just had three moves each!). We think going for quality over quantity was the right call and we're hoping to keep adding more to BCB as fast as we can!

There's spots on the map for Ziggy's and Kirin's stories, so it seems like they may go back and add them.

Both characters are left with a lot of mysteries around them that are teased in the game, but never really examined. You wouldn't even realize Kirin was engaged if you didn't pay attention to a throwaway line from an NPC. She also has huge black wings that appear sometimes, and there's this cloudy city in the north, so I assume that was meant for her. Guess she's supposed to be some kind of angel elf.

There's this small town on the west coast that is never visited that was probably intended for Ziggy. And Ziggy does all sorts of important stuff off camera, the game even points this out by calling it "Deus-Ex-Ziggy" during a cutscene when he just jumps a bunch of relevant plot info that he has no reason to know about. And his whole backstory and why he's even in the tournament at all could be explored.

Played to the credits now. The game is really good, and even it doesn't get the expansions of the 2 other main characters, it has quite a lot of content.

Would be nice to have the challenges as local vs. multiplayer challenges as well.

This game is excellent and is the perfect Switch game. Seriously, don't sleep on it.

I noticed this quite early on. Actually, what I've appeared to notice is that if you suspend with the Home button, the game still runs in the background as if you hadn't done a thing, but if you put the system to sleep with the power button without actually suspending with Home first, the game will pause (tested this out mid-dialogue, when I pressed the power button again the dialogue would resume where I left it at).

Picked this up and had issues with my controller disconnecting every few minutes.

Happened with the Pro and joy cons, haven't had this issue with any other games but caused me to quit pretty early on. Will maybe reboot and try again.

Finally, an OT.

Been enjoying this game immensely. It took a while for it to click, honesty, but once it did, I was hooked. Between the story, characters, presentation and gameplay, it's kind of like the game of my dreams.

Trying to decide between Switch or PC. Any known issues w/ the Switch port?
There are some very slight slowdowns, but outside of that, nothing noteworthy.

I had that issue in another game recently (I think it was Mario Odyssey). Hard system reboot (holding down the power button for 14 seconds) fixed it.

None that I've encountered so far, no crashing or technical issues in around 4 hours of playing. If you can get the PC version cheaper I'd spring for that, as its not necessarily the most ideal "mobile" game IMHO.

That said, game is really good. There's some issues with the mechanics that could have used improvement, but the game has a lot of soul - great dialogue, a very unique premise, and very attractive visually. (The animation is simplistic, very Flash-gamey, but it doesn't hurt the game too much.)

Sleep mode can cause the loading times to get long when the Switch is awake again. Quit and restart the game will fix it.

Thanks everyone! I will see if there is CDkeys etc.. on it for PC. Offt-opic - the multi-quote functions is so handy.

Man, multiplayer hunt/cooking battles seem like they'd be really freaking cool in this game. I don't play many puzzle games, but the twist on this one has me hooked. Voice acting and art are great. I really hope this game has updates or potentially a sequel coming because I'm loving this as a portable title.

Not that the gameplay is similar, but this feels like a Switch game I'll look back on later the same way I remember Cooking Mama (loveloveloved that game) on the DS. Games like this really round the whole lineup out for a portable.

just finished this game on friday. absolutely loved it. Played it on switch exclusively on handheld mode and worked fine. I'm not a huge fan of match-3 puzzle games but the system gets pretty deep and in the context of this game using to represent cooking it feels natural. Also really loved the voice acting. Didn't expect there to be as much as there was. The whole time I was wishing there would be a anime made of this with the same voice actors, it would make a great show.

It's actually pretty impressive how the game keeps getting deeper and deeper, adding new elements to the gameplay as the story goes on (some new elements are even directly tied to the story which is cool), and when it looks like you've finally seen it all, the game gives it another spin at the end of Chapter 4. So good!

I suck at match 3 puzzle games but still like them and I'm having such a blast with this, enough to want to savor it and progress slowly.

I actually strongly disagree -- I think the game is perfect for portable gaming, and I'm super glad I got it for Switch over PC. Matches take like 6-8 minutes tops, and the side missions can be done in 2-3 minute spurts. I think it lends itself extremely well to quick pick up and play sessions.

My only issue with the Switch port is the aforementioned bugs and the fact that there's some pretty noticeable slowdown in the hunting sections, nothing gamebreaking but I hope it gets patched eventually.
