I was personally bored by it. It was way too easy and I was burned out by the end of the main path. I never opened up all the extra stars because I was just done right before I got to that point.

I'm sorry what?
An opinion can be wrong?

Also how is an opinion a meme?
I didn't really like The Last Of Us, am I a meme?

It's a great game OP but it's ok for people not to like it. Nothing wrong with that.

I found it way too repetitive and many of the "kingdoms" are just too small and feel more like regular levels but unfocused. It's good, but there were several points where I enjoyed Yooka-Laylee just as much or more.

Damn, here I was gonna make a thread called "Am I the only one who doesn't like Super Mario Odyssey?".

Think I dodged a bullet :P

I had a lot of fun with it but it had loads of filler moons and it was a bit too easy. I had much more fun with the galaxy games and Mario 64.

I think the mechanics are solid enough for a much better more expansive sequel like Galaxy 2 was, fingers crossed.

First people say disliking Breath of the Wild is a meme, now disliking Super Mario Odyssey is a meme. Next is probably gonna be God of War.

I like both of these games more than God of War.

I like Odyssey, but I disagree with your assessment of it pretty much entirely. This also isn't a meme, it's people stating an opinion. It's really easy to get drowned out when you don't like a thing as much as everyone around you and it's almost impossible to discuss things that could be flaws if rabid fans are dogpiling you.

The farther from release, the more opportunity there is to discuss things.

1) That isn't a meme.

2) If it was, this isn't a compelling counter argument.

3) This isn't really happening. At least not on the scale of Zelda.

4) Mario Odyssey is indeed imo one of the best games of the generation, and I think was my number three last year behind Persona and Yakuza.

I thought it was pretty bland and sold it back as soon as I beat it. But that's just my OPINION.

Is it really much different than what happened with BotW? Some games will have a little backlash after the initial hype phase, especially when they get ambitious. It's okay. A lot of people still loved Odyssey and found it the refreshing change the 3D series needed.

Do you know what a meme is

Also I've been complaining about it since it came out.

This happens with every major release to some extent, but in the case of SMO it is plain wrong.

Soooooo... this happening to other titles is fine cause you don't care about them, but because you care about SMO, it's wrong and there's no way you can accept such a thing?

That's the cold blooded definition of a fanboy. People tend to dislike certain aspects of a game after reflecting on it after a set amount of time. Every game goes through it, and no game is immune to it.

It always seems disingenuous when people drone on about how bad BOTW is (weapons break! no traditional dungeons!), but with Mario Odyssey, I do think it's a game that people were very kind to when it first released.

I do think it's a good game and I had a lot of fun with it, but there are some big issues that just make it feel a bit off for me.

1) Absolutely no hierarchy for collectables. There is no way of differentiating a moon that was difficult to acquire from one that you just found lying around. Total lack of reward when I'm playing.

2) Too difficult to find challenging gameplay. I know the game was never going to be 'hard', at least until the post game. But there is too much randomly wandering around, hoping that the moon you're heading for will have some proper gameplay required to get it, and ideally some actual platforming rather than a mini game. Now that I'm in post game, I really enjoy playing the challenging bit of levels, but having to actually wander around the main level just to find the entry point kills all momentum.

3) The hat capture mechanic is mainly used as a gating device. Need to smash down a wall? Throw your hat at the creature next to the wall. Need to jump up to a high ledge? Throw your hat at the creature next to the high ledge. It's so boring and arbitrary, and there are limited opportunities to use the hat transformations creatively. It's not fun playing as a specific creature if the only role that creature serves is to help me along one specific path (before I'm forced to transform back into normal Mario).

As I say, it's good, but it's nothing compared to something like 3D World or the Galaxy games, which have proper difficulty progression and introduction of meaningful mechanics.

I honestly thought it was the best 3D Mario game ever. I loved it but then I am more into the exploration side in a 3D platformer. For instance I loved Ape Escape over something more platform focused like Crash.

Every game has faults, Breath of the Wild, God of War, Persona 5, and even Mario Odyssey. Big difference is Odyssey doesn't mask any of its issues as well as something like 3D Worlds or Galaxy. Also, not enjoying Mario Odyssey is not a wrong opinion to have because it comes down to preference and taste. One man who doesn't care about the finer nuances of JRPGs or writing might like Persona 5 whereas someone who places those aspects on a higher pedestal will undoubtedly walk away disappointed.

As someone who thought Odyssey was better made than Breath of the Wild, I certainly didn't like it nearly as much. Odyssey's core issues come down to overly repetitive moon collecting and the major lack of challenge. The worlds themselves are finely made, but the lengths to which the player's asked to go to acquire moons is disappointing. A hard to acquire moon holds the same value as an easy to acquire one and that distorts the perception of their quality. Technically speaking, why bother doing the 3 actual levels that ask you to get moons when you can just ground-pound 3 other moons. It's completely possible for the player in question to finish the game while never actually encountering those more Galaxy-esque levels and even then the thrills can be left wanting. The "race to the finish" moons can be quite fun, but their thrills aren't that exciting when they're beyond easy due to an overly forgiving designer. It doesn't push your skills that much either in a way that is properly rewarded. Hat-throwing tricks are beyond fun, Mario's probably close to controlling as well as he does in Sunshine, but when the rewards are almost always a stack of coins it feels pointless. The best way to put the game's difficulty is the final challenges on the Darker/Darkest Side of the Moon stages aren't nearly as hard as the final stage in Mario 3D World. It doesn't help that motion controls are forced in some instances to get the most out of a creature's power. Even when you beat the game and unlock the cubes you're not left with things like harder stages, but more spots to ground-pound and the occasional bird to hit with a hat and when those challenges are repeated in every world it becomes boring and tiresome. There's not enough variety and what variety there is isn't rewarding or challenging enough to feel worth it. It's a very 7/10 experience and it's all due to the level design and means through which the player is rewarded.

I'm happy to see I'm not alone, it's one of the worst 3D marios. Great game still but does not deserve the level of praise it got, it's no where close to Galaxy.

Now if we can only get this going with BOTW which I feel is the worst 3D zelda, still a fantastic game and better than Odyssey.

I don't dislike it, I just think it's one of the weakest Mario games, which still means it's a very good game. It is however far too meandering for my tastes for me to love it, and also a big step down from 3D World, which is my personal favourite 3D Mario game. I've also always prefered the more obstacle course oriented Mario games, which immediately puts it fairly down the list from my perspective. Ultimately I had fun with it for a while, but then I lost interest and just stopped playing it. I still go back to 3D World regularly.

Game had plenty of issues that become more apparent as you get further in and especially on subsequent playthroughs. It would have been a much better game if they cut out a few hundred moons (the ground pound a random spot type ones) and spent that time instead making what was left feel more unique. The lack of platforming challenge with the exception of a few of the late game side rooms was probably the most disappointing thing for me personally, hopefully they also carry on the linear 3D style in the future.
