As long as they can remain competitive with first party content, I see no need.
If later down the road there portfolio is lacking compared to the competition, then its time to expand.

It feels like they have released quite a number of quality games in the last few years, might not need any acquisitions at the moment.

MS on the other hand, they might have even more planned in the short term.

They need a multiplayer focused studio

Revive Zipper and the SOCOM and/or MAG IP

It's sad they closed down the Warhawk people and Zipper Interactive (SOCOM). Then again their business wasn't booming like it is today. Would be nice if they invested more in indie studios making smaller games. A 2-person team wouldn't really cost them that much, really. Better yet, invest in mid-size studios. We need more games that don't scream AAA facial capture AAA cinematics AAA orchestrial soundtrack. Something like The Witness or SOMA or Hellblade would be nice.

Sony's got enough studios in the West which result in at least 1-2 major titles every year. They need a big studio in Japan now, or expand Japan Studios significantly, their Japanese output is lagging behind.

Another thing to consider is how much MS will continue to support second party and 3rd party deals. If they continue with second party and 3rd party, as well as continue branching out with First party, they're a force to be reckon with, but I assume they'll acquire a few more studios and for the most part stick with just their WWS games.

Sony will still have to stay on their A game, but it's manageable.

People suddendly panic when MS is purchasingg studios and Sony is just chill yet they don't know when these MS studios will even make games not like all Sony studios that have already 1-2 years of work on unnanounced games.

Seems rather pointlessly reactionary to me.
Sony clearly has and is investing in their studios. Acquiring existing studios is not necessarily a good thing to do or one that leads to incredible games

I honestly don't get it.

I would say yes, but not in the same way Microsoft is doing. I think they really just need a studio that can put out some quality RPG's and the like and probably a MP focused studio, maybe. I personally would rather most studios stay multi plat but if Microsoft is gonna start gobbling them up then fuck it I hope Sony gets in on it as well.

I think Sony has a damn fine list of studios already. If anything, I'd rather they do more partnerships like Spider-Man where they present studios with the chance to work on their dream IP.

Didn't Guerrilla just hire like a 100 people for a second team.

I don't think Sony needs more teams, they have plenty of those.

What they need to do is expand their current teams so they can complete projects faster and work on multiple projects.

Yes. I have been saying this for a while now.

They need to go back and buy Evo Studios and have them build a new game.
Go back to ready at dawn and have them make a real game this time.
Get the GG Cambridge team together again and have them make a AAA Killzone game.
Make Naughty Dog a two team studio.
Make SSM a two team studio.

I get it. they tried and it didnt work. But try again. If ND wasnt a two team studio, we wouldnt have gotten TLOU. It's worth the risk. This time, learn from your mistakes and do it right. They are bleeding talent left and right because these senior designers want to create their dream game but cant because well, you can only make one game at a time and then stick with that one IP for a fucking decade.

I still remember reading about how TLOU came about. Sony didnt want to lose Neil and Bruce so they gave them a team and told them to go make whatever they wanted. They did the same with Stig over at SSM but that game got cancelled for whatever reason. Stig left, Amy Left, and then recently Bruce left along with one of the guys who directed Lost Legacy. GG recently lost a bunch of people too. Some of it is just people moving on to bigger and better things but you need to lock up that talent. you cannot let these amazing directors get away.

I would also expect more second team studios next gen.

GG and SSM seem like they'll branch off to 2 teams. Or at least get their pre pro started early so the next game doesn't take too long.

ND is a wild card for being 2 teams. Imo they'll transition to 2 teams again, but it's wait and see for now.

No. I mean, if a good opportunity presents itself, Sony should take advantage, but they aren't in a bad place at all.

Nintendo on the other hand needs to incubate or acquire some western developers badly imo. I love their offerings, but they could use some diversification.

Sony likes to cultivate talent over time rather than try to force success. Insomniac is a natural choice for acquisition as such, Kojima's new studio as well.

Only if they feel someone else might buy a close partner. Like if someone else got Insomniac after Spidey and it negatively affected it, I'll be really annoyed. I don't think that'll happen though.
This would apply to From too, but Bloodborne 2 or Demon Souls 2 probably aren't happening anyway and I doubt any 1st party would buy them considering they missed their chance not too long ago.

Can we not do this knee-jerk nonsense? Microsoft is buying developers because their output has been anaemic since the first half of the 360 era. Sony doesn't need to buy developers because their first party output has been their defining factor for over a decade.

Let's see what happens from all this. If MS is buying devs now the likelihood is that we're not going to see their next games release for a good 4+ years anyway. Meanwhile Sony WWS seems to know what they're doing and has settled into a comfortable groove, and we have some developers growing significantly like Guerrilla, Naughty Dog (rumoured) and Media Molecule. I really don't think Sony have anything to worry about, nor should they react just because MS has the chequebook out.

All I want from them is finally a dedicated JRPG studio like Nintendo has with Monolith.

Buying studios doesn't guarantee great games, Instead of buying more studios Sony is encouraging the ones they have to branch out onto different things, who thought that Guerrilla games would ever make a third person game? Or that Sucker Punch will do a Japanese themed game? Or Sony bend will go out of their existing IPs bubble to create a new IP? Giving the people that works for you creative freedom is key, quality over quantity any day.

MS is going for Obsidian and insiders confirmed that's not all.
Should Sony start with their first party expansion? Or should they just focus on what they got already?

I think they should build couple new studios and expand existing ones. But what I found strange that we got zero leaks or new info from insiders about any new Sony studios or any new games. Maybe because there is nothing to leak? #doomed

So what do you think?

But why? Sony still has:
Sony Japan
Guerrilla Games (expanding to 400 people)
Naughty Dog
SSM
San Diego
New studio in San Diego (rumoured could be a new uncharted game)
Manchester studio
Media Molecule
Kojima Productions
Sucker Punch
Sony London
Xdev Studios
Polyphony

I mean that's really good. And I think they are all expanding

This. I don't see the problem at all.

They are opening a new studio in San Diego. We just haven't heard much from them yet. They're also expanding a lot of their already existing studios.

I knew a thread like this would pop up with microsoft expanding its first party.

They should acquire quantic dream and kojima's studio at least.

Let's be honest. Microsoft absolutely NEEDED to do this. Their exclusive portfolio has been lacking this gen. Sony does not. You could argue that they've been the best publisher this gen.

They are investing in studio, just because they don't announce them at their conference doesn't mean they won't do anything, their quality will stay remain top notch even if they don't do anything, their studios weren't formed a year or two ago, they got there with decades of work.

I got to thank Sony for their quality output, its really shifted MS strategy for gaming. More importantly, made it abundantly clear, high quality SP games is enough.

If they want to create new studios, i don't mind that at all. As far as i know, Baba's new team is looking for work

On the other hand, people say they want Japanese games, but they dont buy Japan studio's content no matter how good it is, and that's really sad.

Having more teams doesn't guarantee success.
The more Studios Sony has the more they would need to spread there funding.
The current studios are in a golden Era right now
