They were bought out by the next worst thing to EA lol. The last time they worked with MS it was going to shut the studio down until kickstarter saved them.
It is known in the Industry as the "Bethesda Method"
- get contracted studio in financial problems
- buy them out for change money.
But seriously, Obsidian's only real worth right now is their name. Pillars is not a strong IP, but it is their only IP.
Obsidian lost most of their Talent.
And the good name and good standing among gamers right now, is because they are independent. get them in bed with Microsoft, and you lose your standing. Then they are just another developer who is working for a big bad Publisher on things that is focus-tested to hell.
If it's like when they bought Compulsion and the like. They'll allow them to finish everything up they have pending.

Also pretty sure this was commissioned by Rooster Teeth to drive sales for their RWBY game and their subscription service with Volume 6 releasing this month. I could see them going "sure, throw some games over there as well"
I'd guess it's experiment to see how well it does. If it does well enough, expect more of those.
If someone ends up with a spare Osiris copy, I'll get it, I've some spares I can trade for that.
What are you saying? It's not like Telltale, not even remotely. Pillars 1 was a Kickstarter game, behind Tyranny there was Paradox, Pillars 2 was a Fig game, so they got funds first and released the games later, so they got a profit. Also Bioware isn't Bioware anymore from Dragon Age 2.
With Paradox we would have the base game plus 500€ of dlcs, available on Steam and Gog.
With Microsoft we would have a game with a season pass only available on XBox and Win10.

MS buying Obsidian I think is a good thing. Mainly for the fact that the studio has been much like TT. Just going from contract to contract with not much more. Who knows how much time they were gonna have left with just Pillars if someone didn't pick them up or offer another contract.
I'd say the biggest negative will be the top down RPGs like Pillar and such are gonna disappear. Obsidian will likely go back to focusing on bigger titles in the vein of Alpha Protocol again. Though that in and of itself is pretty cool to see again too. Especially with the latest changes with Bioware at EA seemingly going farther from their roots with anthem.
I'd say the biggest negative will be the top down RPGs like Pillar and such are gonna disappear. Obsidian will likely go back to focusing on bigger titles in the vein of Alpha Protocol again. That is fine with me as that is the only way we would ever get KOTOR, NV or AP. (I know we still arent getting them)

You mean the difference between an Obsidian game that gets content for 5years+ and a Microsoft RPG with an Obisidian sticker?
Telltale was doing all their work from contracts. Majority of Obsidian was the same way. That seems pretty similar to me. Pillars just above is said to be the only IP they own and while they could probably live as a studio with just PoE games. They weren't going to get to a big level of high budget titles in that shape.
Bioware is a whole other conversation and all i'll add is thing didn't really change until DA:I imo
There's no way Obsidian will continue making actual CRPG's under Microsoft.

Well, but Pillars games did well enough, they could go on by keep doing what they did until now. All the TT games were from licenses, they totally dropped new IP development. I doubt Obsidian could end in the same situation, considering there's a public for crpgs and they could still go the Kickstarter/Fig way if they wanted.
I'd be ok with Microsoft if they would release their games on Steam, but not owning a One and being a Win10 user, the only way I can play their titles is to subscribe for one month of Game Pass when it's like 1 or 2€ and play the 2 games they have here for PC.
Also at the moment Obsidian is releasing their games on PC, One and PS4. If they are with Microsoft, Ps4 users won't get a single game and PC users will get unplayable ones, considering their store refuses to work properly.

Larian, CDPR (obviously shutting down GOG in the process), buying Relic and Amplitude from Sega, and Firaxis from 2K. What else? Hostile takeover of Paradox? Devolver Digital? Moon Studios? MDHR?
The possibilities (of fucking up PC Gaming) are endless.

I mean the game should still be on PC. Granted I know how many of us hate the Windows Store (Even I woudn't much bother with it, if not for Play Anywhere). But at least these upcoming games aren't going to be stuck only on a system. Plus there's always the chance that maybe the Windows Store and the like start getting better.
Most Windows store games come to Steam too right? I mean we have Recore and Super Lucky on Steam. I cant keep track of all the other "Windows store exclusives". Gears of War, Forza and Sea of Theives?

A good chunk of them have come over. There doesn't seem to be any real rhyme or reason on how and what gets picked. Outside perhaps the bigger titles have a longer exclusivity period.
Find it weird how many people are genuinely sad about Obdisian being bought. Fact is they have been playing with financial fire for too long, we can bitch and moan about who is buying them but if somebody never stepped in chances are they would be no Obsidian at all.
Games by third party may come, first party not so much. So don't expect Gears of War, Forza & Sea.

I'm sorry you think that Obsidian hasn't made a good game since 2010 - you're mistaken, and need to actually play the games you're talking down on. God help you all.
