Obsidian has made some of the best RPGs ever

They've also gotten fucked up by publisher mandated release windows and scheduling

I think(hope) Spencer will allow them the time and resources to do what they do best though so this is probably good

This is going to be big. Obsidian will have the resources to make some truly awesome games.

Happy for Obsidian if so, they deserved better in the past.

Though aren't they working on something for 2K? Or is that dead?

In general I think it's quite a good move for Obsidian. They've wanted to be bought for ages, Pillars 2 didn't do very well, nor did Tyranny, and they've been doing tons of contract work to stay afloat.

I heard some rumblings about it. At least they're largely a PC developer anyway so nothing will change there. It'll just give them some financial freedom rather than worrying about the next project.

Obsidian finally not going to struggle for cash then.

I've a feeling Microsofts strategy with gamepass is allowing this - acquire devs and have them produce titles that diversify the library, which they wouldn't have funded in the past due to concerns on ROI. With gamepass, they know that most people will play stuff even if they wouldn't have purchased normally.

Regardless what I think of exclusive games, I hope this happens to get them some stability in the coming years, so the people working there can feel more at ease.

Yes please, let them do their things and give us another high budget masterpiece like new Vegas.

Uh. Interesting.
I wouldn't be against it tbh.
For sure I'd rather be able to play Obsidian games on any platform but from my admittedly uninformed perspective, they've always looked like a developer that could use the stability a company like Microsoft could offer them. So why not.

Give me Alpha Protocol HD, Phil. Plus a sequel.
And I promise I'll buy a copy of Voodoo Vince.

I hope MS keeps a more hands off approach, though something says they won't.

I hope it goes through though, because over the years they've had some of the worst luck when it comes to deals falling through and almost closed a few years ago, I'd rather have an OBsidian with the budget of MS behind it then no Obsidian at all.

Heck, this could give way to them making a ireally huge high quality rpg that they haven't really been able to delve into since New Vegas.

That'll be an X0 announcement I assume.

Could always go south, but cautiously optimistic it works out well for both parties -- MS gets a talented developer and Obsidian should (presumably) be free of money troubles. Interested to see what happens with the Take Two game though.

I'd be happy if this means Obsidian can finally have some stability, and works for me since I only want to play an Obsidian game on PC anyway.

Didn't most of the talent that made New Vegas leave?

Microsoft is trying to bootstrap themselves into having a solid exclusive foundation but it probably won't end up working well for them. It takes time to cultivate studios to make good exclusives, time, patience, money, support, and a corporate culture that MS historically hasn't had.

I checked like 5 times to make sure no other threads about this were made and then my thread somehow ended up being the third thread made, lol.

Bad work on my part :(

I personally don't care much for this but it's a good financial move for Obsidian. I have yet to see Microsoft really change how they put their acquired Studios to work, mostly it's been either a waste of talent or mediocre projects, so hopefully this recent wave of acquisitions changes that. I also hope they still allow for some level of independent creativity and freedom in terms of the projects they pursue, that's something I would fear changing in this case.

This does put pressure on Sony though and that's always a good thing for Market competition.
