I actually agree, somewhat. AMATW doesn't suffer from it as bad as venom does though. It doesn't feel as if large bits of the movie is gone entirely, and the editing and general is competent, if not bland. Action set pieces were better imo, with more creative displays of abilities. AMATW wasn't good, but it was coherent and competent in most aspects, and I think that's what critics agree on too
People acting like critics rated ant man 10/10 and venom 0/10
In reality, average scores are 4.6/10 vs 6.9/10

Honestly I think part of it is the confusion of RT scores because it seems like people just look at the score and don't actually look at the score

Plus metacritic being weighted

Hispanic here. Had fun with the movie. It isn't perfect... but save for a few concessions that were made for time and rating it's probably as good as a solo venom movie can even get.

I see a lot of people talking shit who haven't watched it though... lol fuck yall.

Also I saw AMATW and I don't remember a thing about it that wasn't in trailers. What good is technical prowess if your movie is boring af.

Interesting. I have no idea what baseline figures would look like across the entire film industry.

I was in a mostly full theatre in Germany right now, mostly teens from what I could see. Seemed younger than most Marvel crowds I had. Probably because it was a 5€ special on a weekday evening.

They liked it a lot I think, I was somewhat entertained, but it clearly shows that they didn't embrace the shlock they were producing.

This ant man and the wasp slander is outrageous tbh. Anyway venom sounds fun. I enjoyed suicide squad and it sounds like a repeat of that in a lot of ways.

Looking to book a seat this evening for either Venom or A Star is Born and the auditoriums for Star is Born are almost all consistently filled whereas Venom isn't. Box office returns for these two movies should be interesting next week.

I watched it again last night for work, it really is a horribly written film but it's also easy to see how its zaniness appealed broadly across demographics. At times it feels like the script was written by a studio algorithm...and then Tom Hardy climbs in a fish tank.

Just saw it. It was a enjoyable watch but definitely nothing more than that. How clean it all was was such bullshit too.

I have one question ..

He appears to be a "good guy" eventually. Here I always thought he was a very evil dude/thing. Isn't he Spidey's enemy? Although eating the head of that dude at the store at the end isn't exactly good guy behavior ..... But still. [/spoiler

I saw it yesterday. Not an amazing movie by any means, but suprisingly fun.

It definitely feels like they cut out 1/4th of the movie of Eddie and Venom building a relationship/bonding, though.

Venom was only ever a villain because Brock had a inferiority complex that he pinned on Spider-Man/Peter and the Venom Symbiote literally felt like a scorned/abandoned lover.

Once they got past that they pretty much stayed a "Lethal Protector" anti-hero. Then when Flash Thompson became Venom's host he became full-blown hero. (Same for Eddie Brock and the Anti-Venom run).

Funny enough, my mother dropped off a box of my old comics (thanks mom) and I had some Venom comics from the 90s in there. Re-reading them.... Lol, the Venom movie is as good as we were ever going to get. The comics are so schlocky, yet enjoyable.

Interesting, never knew that. But then again, I didn't know much at all about Venom.

Agreed about how it seems they cut stuff. A shame because those were great parts, the bonding between the two. Overall there were several things that were just off but I can't put my finger on it. It felt way too short too.

Really wish they had made it like Logan and Deadpool. Those movies showed that adult rated Marvel films can definitely succeed.

Even Amazing Spider Man 2 made bank during its theatrical run. It missed Sony's targets because Sony was stupid with its predictions, but it made a ton of money.

Sony's Spider-Man movies have been getting asses in seats for a long-ass time, despite the production woes and the fact that they're not Marvel Studios. People still enjoy them as superhero popcorn flicks even if they're not critically acclaimed at RT.

Didn't have anything better to do and traffic was a nightmare yesterday, so I decided to kill a few hours and see Venom.

Liked it quite a bit! Maybe all the negative impressions had lowered my expectations a lot, but I thought it was pretty fun once the story got rolling. Tom Hardy was pretty funny, Eddie and Venom's chemistry was fun, and solid action scenes.
But yes, it was about as by-the-numbers as a superhero movie can be.

And man, that Eminem song at the end was hilariously bad, it reminded me of the Will Smith Wild Wild West song, haha.

Just saw it. It was soo close to being a really great movie. Just a few and scenes that went on way too long. Like the car chase.

Venom is a very cool and appealing character i.m.o - perhaps that is the sole reason for diverse appeal

He is a monster that possesses people - but at the same time has a sense of morality and honor. Sort of like T-800 in Terminator 2 - VERY COOL.

Also Brock is not a stuck up - privligeied suit douche that no one can relate to. Alone, broken and outside the mainstream. Mass appeal material right there.

PS. Also very little sexualisation which is a VERY good thing.
Yeah, plus they totally delivered on the cool design and animation for him in the movie, it looks awesome.

A whole bunch of 90's kids who grew up on the animated Spider-Man series??

I don't know just a random bs thought but the best I can think of.
I could definitely see this having extended interest in the character, I think that was one of the first times I saw him too.

It's about middle of the road overall for me, but it has a lot of potential and a sequel could be really special. The core of the film, the Brock/Venom relationship, is cool.
Agreed, had a ton of fun with it and am really glad it'll get the chance to see what they can do with a sequel since that part was so good. Like others have said, I easily wouldn't have minded another 10 minutes, to bring it to 2 hours, to extend the middle and give a little more more time for further building the bond, since their interactions were gold but that's another thing that also makes me excited for an eventual sequel to get more of them.

Honestly not sure why the film is getting slammed as badly as it is by some. I went in with zero expectations and found myself walking out with a sense of fulfillment. I enjoyed the film immensely, and I love the take they did with Eddie Brock and how Tom Hardy portrayed him.

It really is a good film. I full well expected it to be mediocre but came out of the theater very pleasantly surprised and looking forward to the next one.

Also, the Dialogue between Brock and Venom is utterly hilarious in several parts of the film. I think they did a good job of portraying both characters and the dynamic between the two.
