Me and a group of friends tried to sell one of our other friends on eBay once after he fell asleep at a party but he didn't get any bids.

That's part of why this is so creepy. 99% of any male listing would get jack shit let alone 120k. It's only women that this happens to unless you're famous or something.

Don't make up statistics lol. People don't put other people for sale on EBay anywhere near often enough for you to determine the bidding difference between men and women.

ResetEra, your one stop shop for people who would be absolutely no fun at parties.

ResetEra, your one stop shop for people who will mock you for not finding a joke funny, god forbid.

Not finding a joke funny is not the same as going off to literal comparisons to human trafficking or even trying to infer they're probably racist as well which one poster was doing earlier. Or removing agency and implying this woman must be mistreated... By the relationship and friendship she's been in this long.

It's about proportionate disagreement of disapproval of something. Not making up scenarios, ignoring facts, ignoring context and intent and being so damn hyperbolic over a stupid gone viral ebay auction.

No it could have gone wrong in the sense of she could have started getting harassed online, you know like women are for making a video game, or existing.

You're right, I didn't thought about the questionable use of the photo.

When people start actually selling men, I'll be offended.

Imagine if it was someone putting up his black friend to be sold as a slave and it racked up this much money. Had a description like, "sort of lazy, but nothing a whip and a watermelon wouldn't fix!" Still as funny?

This ain't it...

There are plenty of people in this thread seriously saying that if you don't find this joke funny you have no sense of humor, you would never survive in the real world, etc. Come on now.

I'd suggest most of that is probably aimed at people who completely overreact rather than simply state this wasn't funny or a good use of one's time to them.

If not, well, let me let you know I think it's fine not to think this is funny or to think they shouldn't be using Ebay as their open comedy night mic.

You are making up shit and you're incredibly ignorant as well. One doesn't need to be a racist to be a sexist pig, even casually so. You're just handwaving sexism and toxic masculinity. Let me guess, you are a guy? Shocking.

I'm using my head to judge a situation on all merits including the consent and response from the two parties involved. To me that's common sense, but to the internet it's probably secret toxic masculinity and dangerous sexism.

Do you believe these were serious requests? Do you genuinely thing there are people out there who believe you can buy a woman off eBay? Or was it just jokey responses in the spirit of the listing? As per my other post the whole thing is very Carry On, a bit bawdy, a bit eh eh eh eh, nudge nudge, phwoooooar, back end leaks, eh wot, I'll need pictures of the bodywork because that means pictures of boobs, whooooooa, honk honk. Etc.

It depends if you see that as just classic British banter, people responding to what is obviously, obviously, a joke listing; or if you genuinely believe people were requesting actual sex with this woman because she was actually for sale.

I can't make that stretch I'm afraid, it's just harmless fun for me regardless of how possible it is to extrapolate outwards to women as objects and sex trafficking.

I don't think a bunch of men joking about women being objects to be used is clever or funny... and we're talking about the internet where making a free video game about depression is enough to spawn a hate movement so the idea that there weren't serious sexist people replying cannot be assumed.

Lol. What a great story. The ad copy was perfect and it's always nice to see a couple with matching senses of humor.

Lol. Are you serious?
What is sinister about this?

...about... *squint*... violence?? And then doing an elaborate revenge prank on someone for the playfight you started?

Would anyone be offended if I put myself up for sale? Im curious about how desirable I am.
I mean, there's got to be an easier way to fish for compliments than fraudulent claims to sell yourself into slavery. That said tho, whats your blood type, and how many teeth you got?

you think someone playfully slapping their partner on the ass is sinister violence? Calling it an 'elaborate prank' is also a stretch, I was able to put myself up for sale in less than 5 minutes, and that included creating a new email and eBay account.

I have all my teeth, no fillings. Blood type TBD.

I have to just admire the difference in tone between this thread and the thread about a student union discouraging clapping in order to acknowledge the needs of members of their community.

wow, genuinely shocked at the outrage on here. The ebay listing was genuinely lighthearted and funny, clearly a joke, and many of the bids and questions sound like jokes too.

It's not amazingly funny but the heaps of outrage is very internet knight in shining armour like. Is that what reset era is now?

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make here.

Yeah and I'm using my head to get grossed out at the image of all the pervs and incels getting their socks off at the thought of buying that guy's girlfriend. But instead, let's dehumanise contrasting opinions by calling them the internet because we all know that boys will be boys and whoever disagrees with that must be a computer or a whole network of them.

And what data do you have to suggest this is all pervs and incels? It's that kind of fill in the blanks thinking that doesn't help people when overreacting.

Sometimes humanity, especially Brits, just enjoy a laugh or bit of banter without everyone being a terrorist or serial killer.

Good story, sure it will make a nice story for that couple to tell.

Shame about this topic.

Me and an ex used to do stuff like this all the time but never on a national level. We found it hilarious.
But the fact a bunch of people actually bid on her is really gross..
