If you don't play any of the indies then yes.
With that said, Switch is the first console in a while to never had a dry release schedule since its launch. There has always been great games to look forward to. I never bought so many games in less than 2 years on a single platform.

And this is the biggest reason why I decided against a Switch, and am still happy with my Wii U. All the great Nintendo 1rst party games except Mario Odyssey are available on the Wii U anyway, and muuuuch cheaper.

I'd be stupid to buy a Switch and pay crazy money for these games.
I own a wii u and have only double dipped on Zelda. I still love my Switch though. There are so many other titles to play aside from the wii u ports. Just cause you get a switch doesnt mean HAVE to buy the wii u ports. I might double dip for bayo 2 if it goes on sale and wonderful 101 if it gets a port but aside from that the wii u ports are mostly for those who didnt have a wii u. There are so many other great games though. Why would you limit yourself to first party titles?

there is a bunch of games that are really good, that you might have skipped over since it's true the e-shop doesn't make the best job on showing what is good.

If you like JRPG Xenoblade 2 and Y's VIII are very good. not turn based any of those.

as for narrative indy games, I can recommend Oxenfree and Night in the woods, not too long and very nice ones.

Another thing I do when I don't know what to play is look at a list of "best games" usually by genre and that way I discover gems that I might have miss.

And as usual, take a look at a couple of videos and decide if any of the games that seem good are to your liking.

Hope this helps.

If you're still doing the whole "I don't play indie games" thing in 2018 you're just missing out of so much of what video games has to offer. I'd really recommend not doing that. Just go into the monthly eShop threads and you'll get a million recommendations.

Join us in Monster Hunter and never look back!

But Deadcells, Hollow Knight or Darkest Dungeon are also very good games that give your switch the shine back.

Mine is also collecting dust.

I use it most days.

Collecting dust is a ridiculous statement as even things active collect dust. If anything they collect more dust while playing due to electrical fields unless you're constantly grooming your device.
Wow. It's almost as if well-known idioms don't always follow their exact, literal meanings.

IMO, Wandersong is a much better game than Night in the Woods, in the narrative genre. It balances/merges story much better with the gameplay. (Haven't played Oxenfree, since that seemed to offer even less gameplay.)

Yeah this cant be said enough. Not only is now the perfect time to catch up but switch is the perfecr console to catch up with. If you havent played many of these great indie games in the past and you own a switch you are really doing yourself a disservice by continuing to ignore indie games

Considering the fact that Celeste is my GOTY 2018 for the moment, I strongly agree with you. There are a lot of excellent ones.

I don't think I've even played a first party game this year on mine. My list of what i've bought/played this year:

Monster Hunter GU
Ys VIII
Dead Cells
Dragon Quest Builders
Bomb Chicken
Into the Breach
Hollow Knight
Subsurface Circular
Blossom Tales

I'll probably pick up Octopath, Megaman 11 and Diablo III later this year too.

That's okay. Mine's been largely out of action since Mario, but I still feel good about it. I'll play Tropical Freeze eventually and there's Smash Bros. soon.

Pretty much none of them appeal to me at all.

I bought it last December. It's a good console and i actually used it a lot during the year. It's been collecting dust for the past month because the games i'm interested in don't get launched there so i'm playing them on Xbox or PC and the only game i'm really interested that is slated for release in the following months is Pokemon Let's Go.

You're gonna get a lot of shit for this post, and I love my Switch, but I will say if you're not into indie titles, it's been a bit of a rough year.

Kirby, Mario Tennis and Super Mario Party were disappointing to many, Tropical Freeze, Captain Toad and Hyrule Warriors are Wii U ports and Wolfenstein and especially the sports games are the worst versions of these games.

Smash is my most anticipated game of the year, but 2018 on a first party front has mostly been "here's some smaller titles and GET HYPED FOR SMASH"

We got lots of good indies this year, but honestly, as much as I love Metroidvanias and 2D platformers, I'm burning out of them. Marble It Up was a nice change of pace because it's something *different*.

I hope we get more Nintendo classic games next year to hold us over between big releases. Indies are nice, but honestly, I'd rather play Super Metroid than the vast majority of Metroidvanias on the Switch, I'd rather play Mario 64 than something like Yooka-Laylee, and I'd certainly rather play any mainstream Zelda game than Blossom Tales.
This sums up my feelings pretty well. Hit the nail on the head for me, been a rough year and the few games I have bought for my Switch (Mario Tennis, Tropic Freeze and some indies) really haven't held my attention.

Why would you limit yourself to first party titles?

Because that was the mindset that people basically was forced to use on the Wii U (after the launch months, very few larger games arrived that weren't 1st party), and they reapply that mindset now?

There are many good opportunities to limit the software selection for people interested in that:
* I only buy first party games.
* I only buy games on sale.
* I don't buy 3rd party games that are on other platforms.
* I don't like indies.
* I only play docked/undocked.
* I only play long/short games.
* I only play games with good HD rumble.
* I only buy physical releases.
* I only buy digital, but the storage requirements are too big.
* I don't have time to research the Switch software catalog. Over 1,100 games, and 106% of them are shovelware.
* There is nothing that interest me.
* I don't buy this new game, because it works differently than the previous entry.
* I don't buy remakes.
* I won't double dip.
* I only want virtual console games.
* I don't like 8bit retro games.
* I don't like Mario.
* And so on.

Technically Switch is the worst platform for catching up unless one needs handheld. Steam or PS4/Xbox will be substantially cheaper in general especially if you catch a sale.

Also when people say they don't like Indies it's mostly either they don't like roguelike/metrodivania/platformers or 8bit/16bit graphics. It's understandable if a bit short sighted as there are other genre available.

I haven't used my Switch this year until Octopath released. I have Super Mario Party for the occasional friends coming to my house, but I probably won't touch my Switch until Super Smash Bros Ultimate comes out

In reverse, it's more striking to have a 'mindset' in which you force yourself to sugarcoat your main platform choice with uninteresting/old content so much.

Exclusives-wise it's definitely lacking up to this point (at least from what I'm interested in playing)

Zelda - great
Mario - decent but underwhelming
Bayo 2 - good but inferior to the first game
Octopath - meh
Xenoblade 2 - painfully mediocre so far (~25 hours)

At least Smash isn't that far off.

I see what your saying and as a Wii U owner, I can relate. But, there are a ton of good games on the eShop for me. I've played and enjoyed:

Golf Story
Shovel knight
A Robot Named Fight
Steam world Dig 2
Dead cells
Mega Man 11
Hollow Knight

Then again, I like old styled games. I do recognize that the first party output or big titles have slowed down this year compared to last, but that's to be expected, I suppose. Next year sounds better if nothing else than Animal Crossing for me. Hopefully, there are a few more games I am interested in.

If a person prefer playing games on a portable, why not play it on the Switch or Vita, even if the content is older? Or prefer a hybrid with the Switch? It's no different to "I prefer playing my games on my PC".

Switch was great for the first 10 months then its tanked to Wii U proportions imo. It needs games fast and the technology just feels so dated. We shouldn't be getting low res games like Xenoblade 2 in this day and age!

Owning a Wii U is one of several reasons I still haven't bought a Switch. I'd play Super Mario Odyssey and maybe one or two other exclusive indie games, then I'd just go back to my PS4.

I'm willing to step outside my usual comfort zone if the game has been getting rave reviews.
And still when people suggest widely different types of games you take one look and go "nope that is 2D/retro, yuck"?
Graceful Explosion Machine plays nothing like Shovel Knight. Yeah both are 2D but that is where the similarities end.

If you enjoyed Night in the Woods you might like lots of other adventure games... but yeah a lot of them have pixel graphics and your problem seem to be that you can't look past that? You don't have to have any nostalgia for NES or SNES to appreciate a 2D pixel-art game. I don't like anything older than PS1 basically, but I adore the look of Celeste (...too bad I would hate to play it!).
On my Switch I have things like Subsurface Circular, OPUS: The Day we Found Earth, OPUS: Rocket of Whispers, Shape of the World, Figment and Thumper. Plus lots of other games, including pixel stuff like The Darkside Detective and Thimbleweed Park. Other games I played elsewhere just recently and heavily recommend are Detention and The Coma: Recut. I really wanna get The Gardens Between too.

I have never looked for games to play in the console stores. We have this great forum with lots of threads about different launches, hidden gems and such. I often google things like "best genre X game on console Y" or "hidden gems for console Z" if I am looking for something new to buy.

Sure, most of the great indie games on Switch also exist for other consoles and especially PC. But then your problem isn't the Switch not having any games but you having another console that you prefer for different reasons. And that's fine. Your Switch can gather dust, it won't die. It doesn't "deserve" any more love than you give it if you don't want to play anything on it! Just happily play your PS4 and then play the Switch when it gets something exclusive you wanna play. That's why you got it after all.

(Also, maybe an unpopular opinion, but I actually like that the games aren't getting heavy discounts all the time. They seem to sell well anyway and I am happy the devs are getting their money.)

I see where you're coming from OP. It was gathering a little bit of dust recently. But so have my other consoles.

This is purely down to my availability from work, training and studies. Switch wins out by default because of this.

Portability made me wait for Switch versions of games to come out. Been playing Dragonball FighterZ on it all week in my spare time.

I will probably only have limited time to play other games so pretty happy with not having too much until Smash Bros is out.

I'm not sure if your perspective of the Switch or the Wii U is warped in this comparison. Do you think the Wii U ever had a year as good the Switch's 2018 or do you somehow think that the Switch is doing as poorly as the Wii U ever did? Or both? Because I'm not sure how someone could convincingly argue any of those.

I have too much software to play on my Switch. Being a parent, the portable mode is honestly such a savior it's ridiculous. If something comes out on Switch and other consoles, nearly every time I'll get the Switch version now. Have around 45 titles and still need to finish so much that came out this year. Taking a week off work to catch up in a bit.

As a fellow Wii U owner, I get you. Apart from some great indie games (which are mostly multiplat) this year hasn't been very great from Nintendo itself. I haven't bought a Nintendo published game so far in 2018 which is extremely rare for me. And this won't change until Smash in Dec.

Without owning a Wii U though there would have been plenty games to play. I don't blame Nintendo for porting, it's the wise thing to not leave these great games behind.

Is it though? If you don't care about Mario or BotW (and many, many people don't), and mainly play indie games, I think this year blows last year away, if you read the eShop threads there's been a near endless supply of great games this year.

Last year:

Amazing games like Splatoon, Mario, Zelda, Xenoblade, Rabbids....One of the finest first year line ups anywhere IMO.

This year:

Underwhelming Kirby, Underwhelming Tennis, ports, Mario party, various cardboard releases. Octopath Traveller was the only genuine highlight for me. Oh, and you have to pay for online now.

Dude... The Switch is 1.5 years old.

You're comparing the lineup of two 6-7 year old consoles with the library of one that hasn't even hit its stride. No wonder you're disappointed.

A fair comparison would be looking at the current Switch lineup next to what the 3DS and Wii U had 1.5 years in. And when you do that it's not even close.

That's what I'm doing. Exactly, it's not even close!

(Hopefully I don't need to remind that in this comparison only Nintendo published titles are valid, and the ports are excluded. Other valid titles include exclusive and original 3rd party content like Kingdom Battle. It counts! Also keep in mind that the Switch will only get Smash until like March when Yoshi presumably hits, so you can count this current library as being 2 years old actually.)

It's true - I do have a Wii U but picked it up late in the life cycle and missed a lot of gems. I'd love to give them ago, but for what amounts to a lot of ports, the pricing is a little steep. Holding out for some good deals on physical.

Don't worry, 2008 will be the year of the PlayStaion 2019 will be the year of the Switch!

I don't think it's realistic to expect strong performances every year. Typically, consoles struggle during their first couple of years on the market. The Switch came out of the gate pretty strong with 1st/2nd party software so it would be nearly impossible to keep the momentum going for the 2nd year.

But who cares? Like, who really cares what platform you play your games on? It doesn't matter at all. If there's 100 great games on Switch but 98 of them are on PC and someone says "Well I won't get them on Switch because I've played them on PC" then okay? How then do you even have time to play a different 100 games on Switch anyway?

The thing is it's not even a "Should I buy a Switch?" thread. If someone doesn't play handheld and doesn't like indie or Nintendo games there's basically no reason to get a Switch, yes. But if someone already owns a Switch and is looking to play something on it I don't know why you'd exclude 95% of its library for no reason.

As another Wii U owner..it's pretty much a dead year for me on Switch.

I won't have bought/ be buying 1 retail release this year (not a fan of Pokemon, not a big enough fan of Smash to upgrade from the visually very similar Wii U version).

..but 2019 should be good.

No game system has a big new game to buy monthly. Sony has only 2 big exclusive months apart for the entire and I didn't buy anything besides those.. I waited. It's called being patient.
Nintendo's first party is way better than Sony. But Sony has excellent third party support. There are several high profile games every month on PS4 (although I actually think it had a WORSE summer than Nintendo). Since August there's really no competition between PS4 major releases and Switch major releases. And I think that's the Crux of the issue. Major releases is what people want. Mini releases fill the gaps.

Really can't complain. Neither physical or digital. I have another, at least 10 games here waiting to be played. Currently, I use the Switch way more often than my PlayStation 4. Both systems are beasting though in my homeroom, but the Switch is a little more active. Especially since the Vita is saying farewell, I can continue a similar feel on the Switch.

I also never touched my Xenoblade Chronicles 2, same goes for Torna which I bough pretty cheap in a store nearby a week back. The World Ends With You will release shortly and Pokemon and Smash is on the horizon. My Switch do not have a problem with dust.

I've just finished Okami and am psyching myself up to get into Monster Hunter, but I'm not sure I can be arsed to take on board all the info you need to know what's going on with that game!

So I'm at a bit of a loss too - although I've played almost every major Nintendo release apart from Captain Toad, Bayonetta and Tropical Freeze. Went back to Sonic Mania and still hate it. Ended up going back to Flame in the Flood, which I love.

Anyway. You've got Rabbids, which is really great. Xenoblade Chronicles too (which yet to pick up), and some great eshop stuff like Golf Story, Picross etc.

And the crappy eshop layout shouldn't be too much of a problem for someone who frequents a site such as this. There are plenty of ways to find out what's good without browsing through the eshop.

Wii U in 2014 had DK Tropical Freeze, Mario Kart 8, Smash Brothers, Captain Toad, Bayo 2 and Hyrule Warriors. Thus far Wii U in 2014 has been better than Switch in 2018. I'm sure some will disagree but it's not crazy to think U had a better year so far.

I guess this could sort of be considered my LTTP to The Switch though it has been quite a few months since I bought it.

I bought my Switch in June as I couldn't wait to play BotW and Mario Odyssey any longer. Loved both of those games and I put something like 70 hours into Zelda in its first month. The feel and design of the Switch felt so nice and it's truly one of my favorite looking devices.

I bought Splatoon 2 a few weeks later and had fun with it however I played a ton of the original Splatoon and it felt like more of the same. Since then my Switch has been collecting dust and I've had no reason to pick it up.

Itching for a game to play I bought Octopath Traveler despite me not liking old style turn based games and pixel art so of course I dropped it after a few hours. Same thing with Hollow Knight. I do not like 2D Metroidvania's so I had no love for Hollow Knight.

Owning a Wii U I already played many of the Switch games like Mario Kart, Bayonetta, Hyrule Warriors, Tropical Freeze, and Captain Toad and can't justify buying them for full price again. There hasn't been a big original game for the Switch in a while.

I think the biggest issue is the eShop itself. Every time I enter the eShop I'm just bombarded by garbage. There are so many cheap 2D platforms and anime dating sims type stuff. There's no way to actually find anything worth buying or know if it's even worth getting. If I log onto the PS4 store for example I can find many great games for cheap. I honestly think the Switch needs to cut down the amount of games by half in the store and stop letting crappy little $2 bombard the sales section.

Price is also an issue. There seems to be absolutely no decent sales on the Switch eShop. I know Nintendo games never drop in price but why is Skyrim $60 without ever having a sale? I've seen the same game go for $20 on the PS4 store and the extra $40 is not worth it for portability.

Speaking of portability. I've never actually used it. I live in a one bedroom apartment so my bed is where the TV is and I never have any reason to take it out and play it in bed when my tv is a few feet away. I'm in college and have time inbetween classes where I could play it but I would rather work on homework during that time and then play the Switch when I get back to my apartment.

I'm sure once Pokemon and Smash come out I'll use it again but its so depressing to turn it on and have no games I want to play or buy.

So TL;DR: The Switch is a great device but the store sucks to find anything, games are too expensive, and I never use the portability.

Good luck with the thread OP
