Yeah it's great. Shame the place near me got fucking expensive.

Yeah here in Koreatown the price increase has been pretty nuts.

Popularity explosion + minimum wage going up means that one place that I go to went from $14 per head in 2010 to $22 now.
Coincidentally, I also had KBBQ last night.

Now go try shabu shabu and hot pot.

Yeeeeesss. Shabu Shabu is the business. Chains like Shabuya are great because it's AYCE + you get your own broth with unlimited refills.

hopefully some korenan food that is not just bbq proliferates
Soondubu is pretty popular

Also don't sleep on grilled kimchi, it transcends even the meat.
Especially good if you're eating samgyeopsal (pork belly)

Hey other Koreans, do you even eat bulgogi? I can't think of a time in the past decade that I've ordered it, cooked it or wanted it. No, I don't eat it in my bibimbop, I throw whatever I have laying around into bibimbop. I guess I could pick up the premade stuff at H-Mart.
I would never order bulgogi in a restaurant when I have much better options, but have made it at home on occasion just because it's simple

AYCE bulgogi will be the death of me. A death I willingly embrace with open mouth.

Seattle has a pretty amazing selection of Korean restaurants IF you head north of Northgate on the 99 to Lynwood. For most Seattle folks that's effectively Canada but it's a treasure trove of Korean restaurants and bars.

There's a couple of nice Korean restaurants on the east side and Revel in Fremont - but Revel is a fancy restaurant that does "fresh twists on Korean street food."

Our nice sit down restaurant situation is basically reliant on fads. That's one reason why you have to go to a single parking hellhole district (international) to get decent Chinese or Vietnamese food.

The exception to this is a five block stretch of University Ave where you can also get heroin and bumrushed for your cellphone.

Anyway I want more convenient and nice sit down Korean food.

But now I'm getting heated about banh mi. Basically there are 700 eye wateringly expensive farm to table organic locally foraged ethically raised award winning quirky American cuisine spots owned by one of three people, for every decent Asian restaurant.

Japanese situation is good though - from soba to sushi, from izakaya to Ramen.

I don't know about other cities, but in the past 10 years a lot of Shwarma and Afghan Kebob places have opened up in the Toronto area. For $10-12 you get huge plates of food and a giant piece of bread.

A friend of mine took me here in burbs west of Toronto. Meat, rice, salad, bread. This was like $13 and meant for one person. This is the double meat Vazeri combo.

Dude, it's been a thing since like more than 2 decades ago.

I'm coming to this from the perspective of a Korean discovering American cuisine.

Sometimes I like to have some bulgogi. Much prefer galbi though. The trick is to reduce the marinade to basically nothing while cooking and let all that sweetener(not aspartame, but sugar, honey, molasses, etc.) char and caramelize on the meat. That's the good stuff.

The food is good, but I'm not a fan of the whole experience.

It's pricey, portions are difficult with a large group, and you have to cook it yourself.

All you can eat places are great though.

Korean barbecue is not an option here, but I did go to a couple when I was in North Hollywood and Los Angeles. Both were really good, too, and great value, especially the one in North Hollywood. It had a signed picture of Mitch Pileggi from The X-Files, too.

I've never been to a Korean BBQ despite loving Korean food and other friends having been to and loved a few different BBQs, but it's always when I wasn't able to go.

I need to fix that.

Love Korean BBQ but damn the fact they hide the better options (I'm partial to beef tongue while my friends are partial to intestines & tripe) at the higher prices at AYCE places. That said, I'm starting to crave some right now lol.

Gyu Kaku in my area is garbage. They marinate the meats super salty so that people buy more beverages.
That sucks :(
This one was really great quality. I drink like a fish in general at any kbbq or otherwise, so I'm used to mass fluid consumption as I eat. Water only though

One of the most overrated and expensive food experiences I've ever had this poor soul eat

Korean appetizers and sides are almost comically filling. I love bbq but my jam right now is spicy tofu soups

Me too! AYCE BBQ leaves me feeling greasy. Now, a nice bowl of tofu with rice and all those banchan.... dkgjs <3

Dallas is finally getting BCD Tofu

Prepare for 2am tofu cravings. Good thing it's so cheap.... like $11 for dinner per person. Their fish is apparently really good (I never eat mine.)

Totally different cuisine! I love Japanese BBQ; it's my favorite meat preparation, but Korean BBQ is a different experience altogether.

TBH Gyukaku isn't really good quality but if it's all you have in your area, I'd say it's pretty good. Especially for the price point. Though, TBH, I always view Gyukaku on the same tier as your average Korean BBQ place.

I've been to quite a few kbbq and jbbq places (I live in los angeles), and for whatever reason this Gyu kaku was on point, although it was the first time I ever tried it. Some of the more renown ones I've been to like Yawaza or Totoraku never blew me away. But I actually like one called Tamaen , in redondo beach/torrance, the most but haven't been there in a long time. A lot of the kbbq joints around here are fantastic too though. Love the stuff. There was one place that i LOVED called Hanjip close by me that unfortunately closed for good. That was a sad day :(

Really? I thought Totoraku was the best Japanese BBQ I've ever had, lol.

I'll have to try the GK. I've been to three in OC/626 and they were never really that great. I'll also add Tamaen to my list :D.

Don't get me wrong I still thought Totoraku was super GOOD. Just more pricey for seemingly no good reason from what I remember but that was over a year ago. I can't say I've ever been disappointed by any of these places though haha, I must be easy to please. But yes, try Tamean some time!

WTF it's so goddamn good. All of the meat was delicious. Especially with the sauces they provided. They also had some fantastic tofu soup and green tea ice cream. I need to eat some more.

I am so glad a Korean BBQ opened near me. I hope they stick around. I've been three times in a month, heh.

I feel like we have a Korean bbq thread every week.
Last 5 years has seen a massive influx of Asian food across the US. There were the generic Chinese kitchen and some upscale Japanese restaurants by me. With the good stuff in major cities or Asian market places. Now I got Vietnamese, Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, etc, All good stuff.

A lot of people mixing up KBBQ with AYCE KBBQ.

Radically different experiences.

High-end / Seoul Korean BBQ is just life-affirming. They cook it for you (albeit, at your table), the banchan is unreal, and the meat quality superb.

I love the amount of spicy and pickled stuff in Korean cuisine.
