Fuck! Therion's chapter 3 boss is driving me up the wall. My whole party is now at least 2 levels above what's recommended, and that asshole is still kicking my teeth in. My party/job setup is:

Therion w/ Warrior as second Job
Alfyn
Ophilia w/ Dancer as second Job
Olberic

Anyone have any suggestions on tactics? I saw someone mention some sort of "ankle hold" action, but I don't have it.

Leghold Trap is a Hunter skill. It is very useful for bosses with multiple attacks (at the cost of maybe missing the chance to heal between attacks, I guess).

Is there a specific reason you only have 2/4 party members with a secondary job...? You should definitely be using them for everyone by this point, and the game expects that to be the case. You're imposing a needless challenge on yourself by not doing that, hah.

I have two other jobs unlocked (Thief and Hunter), but they're equipped on characters not in my current party. I don't have a good excuse for that, other than I just don't use the secondary jobs much. I know it's no different than any other game with a job system (i.e. FFT), but it sucks that even though a specific job can't be more than one character's secondary job, the level/skill unlocks are still only per-character. Feels screwed up to me. Why can't I have all four party members with the same secondary job, especially if unlocked skills don't transfer?

Feels screwed up to me. Why can't I have all four party members with the same secondary job, especially if unlocked skills don't transfer?

...because you'd have the same skills 4 or 5 times in one fight? I'm not really sure what kind of perspective you're approaching this from - or what strategies you have in mind - so it might help if you elaborate more, but it's very alien to me, hah.

You want to use skills well across your entire active party, to cover a variety of skills and weapon types (even if you're sometimes doubling up within your party across main and secondaries). What use is 5 warriors if all you can do is hit with swords and spears, but can't debuff or buff or cast spells or heal or...

And there's no reason to ever have someone not using a secondary job; just equipping it gets you stat boosts, extra weapon slots if there's not a full overlap, and 2 skills. I very much get the feeling of not wanting to commit to spending JP at first, but it's really not so rare that you want to never use it. The first skills in each class are so cheap - and the order is up to you - for a reason; even in a situation where you feel like you're stuck using a secondary on a character, you can easily grab 2 or 3 skills you want for that specific boss without worrying much at all about the cost. Stick to a job or two per character to really focus on getting all the skills in, sure, but just equipping one is always worth it. You're restricting yourself to half the skills you could have access to; it's not surprising it'd be harder!

And you always keep the passives, which means there's a few classes you're probably going to want to spend a lot of points in for everyone anyway.

Finished all the Chapter 4s last night. Did some more side dungeons and gonna start doing all of the post-game quests and tackle the boss eventually.

Clocked in around 79:40. Most of my boss kills were Therion using the Thief Divine lol

Finished the final boss today. Used some ideas from the fast kill method, but opted against the 1hp method and went with grinding the boss down steadily. Also didnt want to grind for Beast so went with alot of multi-enemy hitting moves to try and kill the ads at the same time.

Like its been mentioned, I wish you could just save before the big boss and avoid doing the boss gauntlet.
It only works to stop you from figuring out a strategy yourself if you value your time, and just look it up instead.

Greatly enjoyed the game and wish they would release some DLC with tough bosses tuned to survive a Runemaster.

Wow. I havent played this in a while and decided to come back and finish Olberic's Chapter 4.

Says it's a lvl 45 mission, and I'm 51 and getting annihilated! Not quite 1 shotted, but 2 hits in and everybody is dead.

WTF.

MrDaravon thanks again for that strategy. I ended up with another 10 hours on my play time just finishing off side quests, grinding for the necessary JP and trying to get the rare item drops from NPC challenges but got there in the end. Took me three attempts still because of wonky turn order but finally beat the game yesterday.

Honestly, it's kind of dampened the whole experience but this is still a cracking game for the most part. Hopefully it's suitably refined if and when they make a sequel.

More a complaint with JRPGs in general I guess, rather than Octopath in particular, but I really wish there was a way to just turn random encounters on and off. They go halfway with the scholar ability that makes encounters less frequent, it would've been nice if they just went all the way with it.

I want to explore off the beaten path of this beautiful game but I just can't be bothered when I keep getting interrupted with random battles when my characters are already sufficiently leveled up to continue one of the main story paths. And then I'll do the battle and forget which direction I was heading in since the map is useless and end up backtracking by accident.

I think what exacerbates the issue is that treasure chests so rarely have anything worth finding in them. I don't need a 30th inspiriting plum.

Yeah, when I was trying to wrap the game up, this was annoying for me too. Bravely Default had some really great QoL stuff like this, it's a shame none of that sort of carried over. At the very least, would have been cool to have auto battle and fast forward.

just got the
Starseer
job

danggg, those job abilities.
I gotta find a way to fit them in, after already being set in abilities for 80 hours.
Guess I'll take off the stat increases. And evasive manuevers at times.

I wish you didn't need one to break the damage limit.

soulstones can be useful at times during boss fights though, not gonna lie

Did the final boss and clocked in around 88:21.
Mod edit: Please be considerate and use spoiler tags. Especially for key or late game events.

The whole final boss song and dance took me around 3 hours or so, including time fiddling with setups. The first few bosses took a bit until I ended up falling into a Runelord team.

Setup went
Phase 1:
Therion/Dancer
Alfyn/Cleric
Cyrus/Sorcerer - primary DPS
Primrose/Scholar

I took this phase slow but once it got up and running it wasn't too bad. Alfyn so good. I didn't really need 2 dancers because I put Elemental Edge on Cyrus.

Phase 2:
Ophilia/Starseer
Olberic/Warbringer
H'aanit/Apothecary
Tressa/Runelord

P2 started up rough until I could get H'aanit going with Dohter's Charity. Then it was pretty smooth sailing with Olberic using the Warbringer Divine whenever he could.

Dang, endgame:

Did the secret final boss.
Beat all 8 boss rush guys with relative ease.
But I had no idea the final boss used all 8 people. My other 4 were barely ever used during my whole game and were around vl 25

Since you can't save or go back I figured I'd give it a go despite knowing I'd likely lose.
I paired 2 strong guys with 2 scrubs for each time, but lost.

Spent like 3-4 hours on that too, so i'll be a bit before I go back and grind them up.
Wish I'd known before.

Does anyone have a good YouTube link for the endgame story info stuff? I'll want to try it myself on my second play through, but time is going to be an issue.

Hey so I have a question about very late stuff (I'll spoiler tag it apparently ^^)

so yeah I just did the gauntlet and climbing the stairs and then I'm told I must pick two groups. And I'm like damn I have 4 underleveld travelers lol. I'm okay with figuring things out by myself, but one thing is really scaring me : do I have only shot at the final boss? If I fail my first try do I have to go through the hole gauntlet again? Just want to know this because I'm scared of going up those stairs lol. Half of my travelers are 65 with Alfyn being 73, the rest are between 56 and 58 :( I'm scared !

Also, this is a great game, really love it. I'm past 100 hours so clearly I got my money's worth. Love the jobs system, the battle system is great. Anyway if someone could answer my question above please, I'm kind of stressed out and don't want to move forward yet ^^

Yeah, that's exactly how it works, unfortunately. But leveling up the other half of your team should only take an hour or so, doing it in the Forest of Purgation with the +50% EXP/JP accessories and traits.

I'd recommend just YouTubing it, though.
All of the story was in the journal entries for beating each boss in the gauntlet. There's literally nothing else awaiting.

Yep, I just had the memo by trying the boss :(

Welp; I don't know.... leveling for an hour or youtube it and start BOTW?

I'm quite mad lol

recently found time to get back into this game. got 12 story chapters left plus side quests but i just got
Starseer, Runelord, and Sorcerer jobs last night. hoping to get warmaster tonight but it shouldn't be difficult now that i have a tressa rune lord.
love the combat in this game so much but it would be even better if the narrative was more focused. really hoping we get a sequel of sorts. Also while fighting a chapter 3 boss i had primrose drop a x100 EXP buff, had no idea the buffs went that high, ended up with 75k XP, primrose went up 12 levels, cyrus went up 17. crazy.

Hey OT Era,

I've got a question. I got the game but I've been stuck for a while and kind of dropped it. But I adore this game's music, and iTunes Canada finally uploaded the game's full soundtrack and I want to get all of the battle themes.

Battle 1-3, Decisive Battle 1 and 2, Battle at Journey's End and Daughter of the Dark God. Am I missing any other battle themes?

I'm very nervous about attempting the endgame boss. I've got 3 Characters at 85, 2 at like 75, and the rest are at 70. Is it safe to attempt this or is it too hard. I'm afraid to attempt it and lose. Ha ha ha.

Thank you!!
Oh man. I'm stuck on chapter 2. My main is Cyrus, so I went with his chapter 2 first. I found the thief class by accident. I guess my main issue is that I'm not sure who my main party should be, because character wise I only like Cyrus and Tressa. I thought Ha'anit's Pokémon like gameplay would be fun, but it isn't. And even though I'm at level 23, I'm still having difficulty with the dungeon.

This game has completely exposed how badly I suck at RPGs. :(

I haven't even retried and I see why if you're not going with chars at that level lol

Since my first attempt I leveled my secondary team during my commutes, now everyone is at least 65 with Alfyn being over 70, but I still think it won't do :(

I really want to finish this game damnit !

You should be fine, 70s it's more or less the recommended level

What's your setup? Gear?

I've got Primrose/Thief, Tressa/Sorcerer, Alfyn/Cleric, and H'aanit/Warmaster as my A-Team and Olberic/Hunter, Therion/Runelord, Cyrus/Starseer, Ophelia/Apothecary as my B-Team. A-Team is 86, 86, 85, 70 and B-Team is just straight 70.

Mmm looks good to me, maybe swap Haanit and Olberic.

If you still feel unprepared, some postgames sidequests gives you really good weapons

Specifically Zeph, Heathcote and Ali.

Hope that helps! Good luck

Holy shit...just had the clutchest battle ever. Spoilers ahead.
Mother. Fucking. Runelord.
I found a job class cave and it was for a Runesword. Lvl. 50 danger level. I got a team of tressa/hunter cyrus/archmage primrose/healer alfyn/thief and we are just barely lvl 50 on tressa. The rest have just hit 40.
YOLO

I go in. He's weak to arrows, daggers, axes, light, and dark. That means Hunter Tressa Arrowstorm, Ruinous seed Alfyn, and Cyrus with the light spell are my guard breakers. Cyrus and Alfyn can hit for 3 and Tressa is a crapshoot. 3 is the usual. Tressa has every skill to make here hit extra. Eye for an eye, patience, whatever. She gets extra hits sometimes, extra turns and goes in so shes a troopper. Alfyn and Primrose are on healer duty and both have the healer skill to heal above their maximum HP...thats very important later.

Anyhow till halfway through the fight you can only break him with ax and dark. Once he shifted to arrows and light it was easier because my cyrus didn't have a dark ability. I had only just beat the archmage for the class and it was also tight but nothing like what I was about to face. You see once you get the Runelord to half health all his weaknesses unlock...but he has 9 shields to break and his attacks now hit EVERYONE and occassionally add sleep or blind. This mother fucker usually kills in his two turns. but so long as primrose is alive on healing I can survive long enough to break him and heal folks. Then I generally abuse my Large Ice soulstones that I loaded up on with Therion when I stole them from the enemies in the archmage cave. Dude earned me like 20+ so I could hit for 5400 every time I broke the runelord!
Fast forward...this dude is at half health, im out of stones and he put everyone to sleep. EVERYONE. That means he goes 4 turns not just 2. He kills everyone but Primrose who is going to die. I can't revive everyone because they'll die in a single hit and he goes next turn before I get another turn with Primrose. I dont have any BP to boost that revive with. If I heal Primrose to maximum he goes once, then I go then he goes. Theres no getting out of a cycle of healing than getting rocked and having to heal again next turn if I choose to heal. Plus if I get put to sleep again I lose.
Then I get an idea...I'd use a LARGE Olive of Life on Alfyn and see if he'd come back to life overhealed to 9999 because of his skill to heal beyond his limit.
...
It. Fucking. WORKED.
He's back, Prim dies, Alfyn gets hit by both turns. Still conscious. Does the same to Primrose. Now Prim is 9999 and Alfyn is still around 3000 (yes he hit me for nearly 6k in two turns). I revive and bring back the crew. Somehow things start lining up and I start to use Tressa arrows to break him, Prim to heal us all, and Alfyn concoct to hit them 3 times. Its working but we got like no damage. This cycle repeats like twice. One time we were all low on health and he had two turns coming up and the only chance I had would be if he killed everyone but Prim so she could use max boost revive otherwise there was no way I'd be able to make it if he killed all but like two of them because I'd need at least 3 turns to get everyone revived and ready to do an attack. If he killed two it'd be prim reviving them and then me and whoever else dying and not enough turns or items to revive the rest without slowly losing ground. I made it. He literally killed all but Prim, I revive them all with max boost, Prim dies and we use our turns to revive her, and get a few more shields broken.

This just keep going with me goin all the way down to Primrose and abusing Olive of Life but I use my last large one so I know I gotta do damage. Then I get an idea. Alfyn has been using Concoct the whole time meaning he's stockpiled Boost. This time instead of trying to break the guy I use Alfyn's lvl 3 skill that makes items hit everyone for 3 rounds and cast it on Primrose who is next. She then uses Revitalizing jam to max hp, sp, and BP the entire party. I manage to get the runelord broken during this time and do it again to refuel BP on Cyrus to cast his lvl 3 scholar ability to massively increase damage on attack all skills and have them only hit one person. Then I have Alfyn concoct a speed boost to primrose to go first next round to have her cast Peacock strut on Cyrus and boost his elemental damage, finally Tressa gets a bonus turn due to her skill and uses pomegranites to fully fuel Cyrus. When he comes up next turn he max boosts and hits the fucking Runelord for 15000ish.
Bastard still stands. I'm out of gear. I tell alfyn to use a medium shadowstone to at least get some damage on this fucker who wont fall.
DEAD.
O_O

Im exhausted. Holy fuck. I should've lost outright for like the entire last half of the fight. It was nothing but being put to sleep, everyone dead, healer near death, healing to only have her die, using my turns to revive her, and just a miserable war of atricion.
I got the Runelord job class now. I'm exhausted. Holy fuck this game. I've never had an RPG battle so god damned intense and close where I should've lost every fucking turn for half an hour only to win it after all.

Thanks! I hadn't had an RPG boss fight that intense in a long long time. Probably a decade or more since anything close to that had happened.

MVP for that fight was without a doubt Therion...who wasn't in the party. Why? Because His ability to steal two of something, his general ability to open purple chests, and great stats to take things from townsfolk is the reason I had so many Soulstone L to abuse for damage. Without the ability to hit for 5400 everytime someone had a chance during that fight I'd never have lasted long enough to kill it on my own. I'd gone through
The Shrine of the Archmagus
with him in my party for that fight and before hand I had spent over an hour just stealing from the rock looking dudes in there. You could steal L Icestone from those two at a time with Therion. Plus there were occassional Thunder stone L and others to get.

MVP=Therion. Without him constantly filling me up on high damage items that are better than any of my party's normal non boosted attack options theres no way I could have beaten
The Runelord or The Archmagus Shrine bosses

I just love how these games allow people to think of obscure and creative strategies which ACTUALLY WORK! It's such a satisfying feeling!

There are going to be more fun encounters coming up for you. Would love to read your reactions on them too :D

Mmm looks good to me, maybe swap Haanit and Olberic.

If you still feel unprepared, some postgames sidequests gives you really good weapons

Specifically Zeph, Heathcote and Ali.

Hope that helps! Good luck

Well...

I fought him.

I accidentally sent my A-Team against the first half and my B-Team against the second.

The B-Team pretty much got immediately wiped. =_=

So I've been making my way slowly through this game. I'm 70 some hours into the game, and have 3 more chapters to go. It's a game to me that has a lot of ups and downs; the very episodic nature of the game I think works against it for me since I found it very easy to put it down after a chapter and forget about it for a long time, never going back to "grind" for the levels for the next character.

That being said, the last 10 hours or so have been a lot of fun as I had to use strategy for the boss fights which ended up being where I found a lot of the enjoyment of the game. Story-wise, it's pretty up and down with my favorites being Primrose's, Cyrus's and Ophilia's quests.

It's kinda funny though how some reviewers prior to the game kept claiming that there's no overlying connection between the character stories. I haven't been them all yet (have Therion, Olberic and Haanit to go) but at least for SEVERAL of the characters I've beaten so far, it's CLEARLY building up to something overarching here. Sure it ain't FF6, but even now where I still have a ways to go, there's plenty of questions I have with some of the "completions" of the quests which I have no doubt will be answered in the post-game stuff.

To be clear regarding the reviews- the lack of connection thing was mainly regarding the characters themselves being involved in other stories (as they aren't), since people were making false claims that the structure changed. And reviewers also did not know what the postgame was till right before/during the release, because Nintendo refused to explain or even give hints when asked beyond saying something existed, and it was only figured out then.

(And, of course, some reviewers did not finish all 8 stories before writing the review and stated as much).

Eh, plenty of reviewers claimed that there were zero connections between the stories period. Or that there were no hints at any post-CH4 content, which was obviously wrong to anyone who wasn't skipping cutscenes.

Inaccuracy was a big problem, in addition to the unclear structure of the game itself. There was so much misinformation being bandied about, even as early as the infamous FFVI interview, it was staggering — and definitely colored some people's expectations.

Second time was the charm.

I ended up power leveling my B-Team five or so levels and switching a few of the jobs around. First battle had Sorcerer Cyrus and Hunter Olberic doing most of the damage while Dancer Therion and Apothecary Ophilia spammed Jams and heals.

Round two saw me almost lose immediately when Runelord Tressa almost died right off the bat, but we were able to get some traction and dealt the killing blow right after everything seemingly fell apart and Starseer Primrose was taken out. Final round was a Revitalizing Jam by Alfyn to pump up Warmaster H'aanit and Runelord Tressa who both used their divine skills to bring it home. I'm lucky Tressa's attack took Galdera out because he had four turns in succession coming up and everyone only had one sidestep left.

I'm trying to prepare for the final final boss right now but I think i'll need to get everyone to atleast 70. Right now my lowest is 61 and my highest is 77. I've done every other sidequest and I don't think I'm missing any weapons, armor or accessories. So many options for teams and builds. Not entirely sure which way i'll go.

So people ripped the sprite sheets. As best as I can figure, each main character has around ~250 sprites of animation for basic map movement and cutscenes, and about ~70+ frames of animation for each Job in battle, which leads to about ~9000 sprites for the central cast. Then there's 100+ characters that have "full" sets of animation that are 70-100 frames of animation each.

There really is a shit ton of sprite work, and much more than I had estimated pre-launch. Probably 5x-10x of the # of sprites for the SNES games that it "looks like". FF5 only had ~12 frames per Job/Character combo, and ~20ish for basic map movement and cutscenes.

Final Boss
What in the flying fuck man. Fight 8 bosses, no saves, go in on the final boss after those 8 and one of the souls does self immolation without any fucking warning and offs my entire party in one shot with all of us maxed outt above 8000 hp due to saving grace + Boosted healing. No seriously. What the fuck? Isn't it supposed to say its counting down to something and you gotta break it first? How does it just first turn as soon as it reappears on the body of this fucker just suddenly do that move? How. The. Fuck. HOW THE FUCK!? Horse shit fucking hell was that man!? One hit kills with no warning?! My eyes are brine-ing in salt as we speak from that. I was there over an hour just getting to the boss and then nearly another in the fight with him and he still wasn't even red and that was with Cyrus peacock strutted, surpassing powered, RUNED THE FUCK UP, and lvl 3 boosted specialty skilled on the fucker after elemental breaking him and hitting for 40k + every turn with him not counting eveyone elses rune damage and soulstone abusage. And it just one shots no warning?
ANYONE HAD IT SELF IMMOLATE WITH NO WARNING?!
Fucking bullshit

Wow. That sounds like it would dash any hopes of IV - VI in the same style, as it's probably more work than what Square-Enix is willing to invest in updating those games.

So now that there's been some distance where is this falling on people's GOTY list? I've played a lot that I liked this year but thinking back on this game makes me smile in a way other games just don't.

Either this or GoW. I played this so much more though, and enjoyed pretty much every minute. I generally really like open-world JRPGs, and there are few that are more open than this.

It started off high on my list, but it's slowly dropping. It looks good, it sounds great, and it plays nicely, but the grinding is killing me. Maybe it's my own fault for using fast travel a lot or not having/using all of the secondary jobs, but the difficulty spike on the chapter 3 bosses (*cough* Therion *cough*) has absolutely crushed my resolve. I haven't touched the game in a week and a half and I'm hesitant to even go back and finish it.

And I know some people will probably say "I didn't have to grind." Good for you. Unfortunately, I'm not the best strategist in RPGs. I lean on being able to take some damage and healing my party members while mixing in my attacks/damage dealing.

But... why not just use those secondary jobs?
